Would you report a neighbour's untaxed car if it was just parked on the street?

The neighbour's car has been parked there for months and I just checked that it's untaxed and has no MOT. Its taking up a parking space. Will it cost them anything if I reported it? I don't want to cause undue stress or financial hardship.
atom_stacker@reddit
What outcome do you forsee that won't cause them some sort of hardship?
What do you want to happen when you report it?
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
The gov just tells em to sort it with a warning and then they just sell it or scrap it for a profit and then a parking space will free up from a congested street.
atom_stacker@reddit
You have far too much faith in the humanity of the DVLA.
Scared_Research_8426@reddit
I'd like to see a giant yellow clamp and a black and yellow sign saying 'tax evasion' on the front of Starbucks, caffe nero, amazon fulfilment centers, and McDonald's.

As the Neighbour isn't a twat to you, put a note on their car if you dont want to speak to them. Politely say some of us have noticed your car is untaxed. We're worried you'll get reported for it, maybe you've forgotten. Give them a week, then reported them.
External-Piccolo-626@reddit
Not so much the tax but the MoT absolutely. That’s a safety matter.
cgknight1@reddit
What did you find in their bins to support the idea that it will cause financial suffering?
If you are going to snoop, do it properly and be proud of the job.
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
Lol not reduced to dumpster diving just yet but it's a council house and it's obvious they can't seem to afford to keep a car insured and taxed, so I don't want to add any unnecessary bills to their life. Not sure if having an untaxed car on the road would mean they'd get fined or something.
srm79@reddit
Don't pile more misery on them if they're already struggling - unless it's in your actual way and they won't move it when asked, mind your business. You don't know how close to the edge they might be, this could be the final straw that sends them spiraling
Curiousinsomeways@reddit
So why are you reporting it then?
ChemistBubbly8145@reddit
Why are you making a fuss over someone’s car, maybe they cannot afford to update it. Mind your business
MiddleEarthFoak@reddit
If it was parked in front of my house, I would report it the same day. If it was in front of their own house, I wouldn't bother.
Djinjja-Ninja@reddit
Yes, they will receive a fine.
£30 plus one and a half times the outstanding vehicle tax.
GlutBelly@reddit
Wait that's it?!
behemuffin@reddit
That's it for the tax, but for no MOT the maximum fine is £1000 and the vehicle could be seized and impounded.
In reality, unless it's parked really badly and causing an obstruction, the likelihood is they'll get a couple of warning letters before any action is taken.
GlutBelly@reddit
That's crazy how light the penalty is.
behemuffin@reddit
I think it's reasonably proportionate - non payment of vehicle tax is an administrative failing that doesn't have huge immediate consequences for anyone. Lack of MOT is definitely the worse offence, since it means the vehicle could be severely unroadworthy.
£30 plus 1.5x tax means the fine gets bigger the longer you leave it, which makes it even more fair and proportionate. Also, that is the fine for using (or parking) an untaxed vehicle on the public road. There's a separate 'late licensing fee' of £80 that you could be charged on top of all that. Failure to pay any of those fines is a criminal offence, with a maximum penalty of £2500.
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
Ooof. Leave it then.
Thanks
scrotal-massage@reddit
Sounds like the vehicle is abandoned. You can do the trifecta, tax, MOT, and abandoned vehicle (to local police).
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
yes, have recently done so in fact as street parking space is limited here and it had been parked without an MOT on the street for a year and without tax for the past month. Was in fact taken for an MOT and retaxed within a week of my doing so.
So the neighbour has now encountered a cost for breaking the law, which is a positive development.
Grenache@reddit
If thwy were twats, sure. If they were alright, no.
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
Nice to me but twats to others.
Cantaloupe-Hairy@reddit
Others can do it, the ones they are twats to
D0wnb0at@reddit
Twats are still twats tho even if they are nice to you
ComplexOccam@reddit
I’d report. It’s anonymous anyway. Just cos they’re nice to you no need to be twats to others
Grenache@reddit
Man that's an impossible conundrum. Only you can decide really, it's a decision based exclusively on your morals and experience. For me it would be a decision based on how much I like them and how much of a twat they are to others.
Voodoopulse@reddit
We had someone move on the street, he started putting notes in peoples cars saying don't park in front of my house, there are no reserved spots or anything.
You bet your fucking arse I shopped him for his shitty van having no vehicle tax
Ecstatic_Food1982@reddit
What happened? Was it towed away?
Voodoopulse@reddit
He ended up getting the fine and paying the tax
sucksblueeggs@reddit
I did. Neighbour had 3 cars for 2 people and only enough room on the drive for 2 of them. The one with no tax or MOT was on the road so it never moved, and meant guests had no where to park. Nice enough people but when they moved in the first complaint was the parking situation
D0wnb0at@reddit
It would depend for me.
1: do they have a driveway to store the car off the road? Cause if they do then they are just being pricks so I’d report it.
2: how much is it inconveniencing me: if some days I can’t get street parking near my house due to it, then I’d report it.
3: would depend on how much I liked them, if my current next door neighbour was untaxed for 1 day I’d report it. Neighbour in the other side I wouldn’t report it if it was sat there for years as they are genuinely nice people.

Busy cunt
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
Bored cunt more like.
atom_stacker@reddit
You need a better hobby 🤣
hassan_26@reddit (OP)
😅 True
knight-under-stars@reddit
Have and would again.
We have one particular neighbour who doesn't have a driving licence; buys knackered old cars and drives them around with no tax, MOT or insurance until they break down or are seized.
This cunt has no respect at all for those around him and so I quite happily report him over and over again.
Leader_Bee@reddit
Wow, busybody neighbour

LifeMasterpiece6475@reddit
These days DVLA just sends out a fine for any untaxed or uninsured cars that's not SORN. No need to report it.
If it's SORN and parked on the road. The fine is actually bigger.
Anxious_wank@reddit
How accurate is that? As I've heard lots of people say this over the years, but most people I know that regularly don't pay their car tax don't get sent fines.
It's not until the vehicle gets clamped so they face any sort of penalty. These vehicles can be clamped multiple times over the course of a few years too.
LifeMasterpiece6475@reddit
The reason people get away with it is they declare it SORN, where it is supposed to be kept on private land and not used. But if they park it on the road and no one sees it then the DVLA is none the wiser, but if they do get reported, or seen (only takes a police car to drive by with NPR active). And they have declared the SORN the fine is a lot larger.
LondontoGatwick@reddit
In our area they regularly have DVLA wheel clamps on cars. Towed 24 hours later.
Obvious-Water569@reddit
If it’s not blocking my drive, no. It’s none of my business.
EvilRobotSteve@reddit
If you don't want to cause stress or financial hardship why are you even asking? What do you think is going to happen if they weren't going to be fined for it? You must've gone out of your way to check the status anyway as tax discs are no longer a thing.
Unless the parking space is right outside my house and I want it myself (and even then, I'd speak to the neighbour to ask them to move it first) or the neighbour is an arsehole, then I saw nothing.
CartoonistNo9@reddit
It’ll get clamped, the clamp will be removed for a few. If it’s not paid quickly enough it’ll get impounded.
Anxious_wank@reddit
Don't even have to report them around me, they regularly do sweeps of the roads and clamp what they find.
YesIAmRightWing@reddit
nah, none my business.
it will cost them plenty if you did yes.
barrysxott@reddit
No id have never noticed in the first place.
Neddlings55@reddit
My neighbour i would.
Absolute bitch that causes no end of issues for everyone else.
Other peoples, no.
LondontoGatwick@reddit
Yes I would but the chances of me noticing in the first place are pretty slim.
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Depends if i liked them as neighbours or if it was in my way.
My aunt has this issue there’s an untaxed car thats been parked on the road outside her neighbours house for about 9months now.
axelzr@reddit
Depends which neighbour!!
whdeboer@reddit
Come on spend your time on something more productive. We’re all struggling atm.
Ok-Somewhere911@reddit
No, I can't imagine caring enough to even know this information about my neighbour or their vehicle, never mind reporting it to someone.
peppermint_aero@reddit
ah but you see they're taking up a parking space on a public road
warburtonbread7@reddit
I’d speak to them like human being first before putting on the petty hat
