What's the most shocking thing that happened to a classmate of yours after leaving school?

A few people my mum went to school with are in prison for various offences however this one takes the cake.
This guy my mum went to school with was well known in the area for stealing things. Petty things too like booze and cigarettes. He had never been caught before.
I'm not sure why but he climbed onto a roof of a shop. Unfortunately, his weight and because the roof wasn't strong at all, he fell straight through the roof and died because of the impact he fell. I assume he hit his head and died because of brain injuries.
What's the most shocking thing that happened to a classmate after leaving school?

A girl in my year was kidnapped, raped and murdered the year after we left sixth form. A lot of people from our year came to the funeral, like a really grim school reunion.
rubicondeluxemango@reddit
Was this in Northampton?
Loose_Avocado4670@reddit (OP)
Wow, that's actually tragic. I hope her family is doing okay.
OmegaSusan@reddit
I think of them often. I didn’t know them well — I vaguely knew her sister as we’d had Saturday jobs at the same shop — but I hope they’re as well as they can be, too.

He went skiing, crashed into a tree, got severe brain damage.
He had just received a degree in engineering he'd never get to use.

Skiing to me seems like the most dangerous sport in existence. I mean Michael Schumacher and Ken Block

Natasha Richardson too.

This happened to a guy a few years above me. Was it a single sex grammar school?
maybenomaybe@reddit
No, Canadian university.
takhana@reddit
Very sad that it’s happened more than once then!
Sponge_Like@reddit
You can add Michael Schumacher to that list :(
Original_Archer5984@reddit
If he were American it would have been a TRIPLE tragedy.
The would have been severely injured with a TBI, thus making him a dependant.
Husband family would have been bankrupted by his trauma care, and THEN AGAIN BROKEN by his long term care needs.
AND HE and his family STILL WOULD HAVE OWED $$$$ TO PAY HIS STUDENT LOANS. FOR A DEGREE THAT NETS HIM, or his family. ZERO GAINS.
bunchofrightsiders@reddit
Why are we making this about America?
kipperfish@reddit
Because the incident he replied to happened in Canada. Close enough.
bunchofrightsiders@reddit
Where's Canada mentioned?
kipperfish@reddit
Right here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/s/GVk8M5Yclr

Oh!
Making it about America was never my intention. I was merely highlighting amd pontificating that here in the USA, with all our privilege and power, it seems like we are the ONLY country that could/would COMPOUND this tragic happening

A couple of years above me and I didn't really know him, but he released a series of very profane songs, including ones aimed at beginning Christmas number ones in various years entitled things like "Use my Arshol as a Cnt", "Bris Jhnson is a Fcking Cnt" and "Bris Jhnson is Still A Fcking C*nt". And the stuff that wasn't released as a Christmas single was even more out there. And frequently utterly hilarious. Oh, not to mention "Shannon Matthews The Musical"
He does include a genuine class photo from our school in his video for the song "Perverts on the Internet" , for good measure.

Hard to wrap your head around it. There were many kids at school who you'd think 'they'll end up on a register' but, he wasn't one of them and that's the truly scary part.

One of my best friends in elementary school got pregnant at 13 by her 18 year old boyfriend. She was taken out of school, and I never saw her again. I was later told she miscarried.
She became a drug addicted prostitute who was regularly arrested. A few years ago, I looked her up, and she died about 15 years ago.
Admirable-Medium-201@reddit
I am from an Eastern European country.
I was in the same class for 12 years (primary and secondary school) with this girl who was smart and pretty and not a bad person ultimately. Of all the people from our year I'd say she had the highest chances of making it big.
We were kinda friendly in school but lost touch in university as I studied archaeology and she studied journalism.
I haven't been following her career but in recent years she became infamous as a Russian propagandist and desinformation spreader and maybe even doing a bit of spying for them too. She's even given legitimacy to a conspiracy theory about US biolabs in Ukraine aiming to spread viruses and deadly diseases.
I know it's not quite on a par with the stories shared here but it is absolutely shocking to me how a smart person sharing a lot of the same values and interests as me in our teenage years can go down that spiral.
Also makes me sad that she never managed to break into legitimate journalism (maybe due to lack of connections and not sleeping with the right people) and has resorted to questionable practices just to be able to cosplay as an investigative journalist.
NightmareAnonymous@reddit
Unrelated, but how are jobs in archaeology. I've been thinking of studying it at uni but online it says the job prospects + pay is low in the UK which makes me unsure about it, so any info would be appreciated. Do you think it would be better to just scrap the idea?

These are all people I went school with...
Had 1 lad who got put down for manslaughter.. drugs related incident, set fire to a house thinking it was the house of the person who owed him money...burnt down the wrong house and killed the people in it.
Another lad in my year got sent down for manslaughter. Off his head on drink and drugs, was driving in our city centre about 7am at 60mph in a 30 zone and killed a pregnant girl who I actually knew...That one was fucked.
A girl I went school with came out as a lesbian, her and one of her 'female friends' began speaking to an autistic bloke online...Decided to get him to meet up with them, they got him in one of their cars and then slit his throat and killed him.
Another lad a few years older than me from school led another lad to a public park, battered him to death with a clawhammer.

Not long after we left school a boy in my year was murdered during a robbery. Kind of. He was drunk and they coerced him into going to an ATM and withdrawing money. He had £10 so they pushed him into the local river. He couldn’t swim
Also had a suicide. Or two? A couple of other deaths but I’ve never been certain of the circumstances
And then two years ago a boy in my year (like we didn’t leave school twenty years ago but we’re the Facebook generation) fell off a balcony. Drunk iirc. He was something like ten days out from his wedding to his boyfriend of over ten years which is traumatic but what’s worse is that even without seeing headlines the posts his family put up left the fiancé out and made it so obvious they suspected he was involved (fairly sure it was concluded as accidental). Imagine being that guy. I didn’t know him personally but he’s a minor celebrity, which didn’t help. You’ve been with your partner for over a decade. You’re finally getting married. He dies in awful awful circumstances and then his family suspects you pushed him. It was dark

One in prison for murder, two for noncing. Three suicides, one accidental overdose, one sudden and completely unexpected death from a ruptured brain aneurysm, one quadriplegic after a drunk driving accident.

A lot of folk were sad but honestly he was a bit of a dick. A couple of days before he died he punched me in the head at a party when I said ‘hi’ to him while he was off his nut on coke. The weird thing was an hour beforehand we had sat chatting quite happily for a while.

This guy in the year below me was one of the torch carriers at the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony. He didn’t compete though he was on the reserve team. If I remember correctly a few youngsters did it as they were seen as future gold medalists. He never went further though.
A guy in my year got stabbed to death after a fight over a girl. Pretty sure drugs were involved as well.
gromitrules@reddit
He didn’t die. Now, that might seem like a weird thing to be shocked by, but one of my classmates clearly suffered from Munchhausen or something like it. He convinced absolutely everybody (teachers and students alike) that he was dying of cancer and only had a really short time to live (lymph cancer, I think? At the time pretty much a death sentence). He looked like he was doing chemo, hair falling out, skin looked pretty greenish, lost weight - we were all beside ourselves with worry about him.
Well, imagine my surprise when I met him a couple of years later and he rather shamefacedly admitted he’d never actually been ill. I was pretty angry with him for having played with us all for months on end and I don’t think I’ll ever really forgive him. We’re Facebook acquaintances now, but I really thought we were friends back then.
Phinbart@reddit
I knew a guy at school who had Munchausen by proxy. He came to our school in Y11, and privately admitted to me that he'd been out of school for a number of years, as he'd convinced himself his mum was seriously ill for a long period of time and he needed to look after her.
He stayed with us through sixth form, and wasn't a particularly remarkable student (other than being a semi-edgelord-type figure and being known for not really giving a piss about anything). That was until near the end of Y13, when he decided to try and swing on the narrow pipes that spanned across the study room, broke his leg and, having been relegated to a special room for his A-Level exams, got kicked out for doing nothing but drawing a small smiley face on one of his papers.
His best moment has to be when he wrote a scathing email to the sixth form leads, accusing them of treating us "like automatons", prompting a furious head of sixth form to enter the study room yell-asking us if we had anything to add (and our bemused nature at that soon turning into quiet admiration when learning of what he'd done). He wasn't wrong, and it wasn't a surprise to find out that our year was, among the staff, considered "passive-aggressive".

Are we all leaving the positives out?
One of my classmates had a terrible reputation in college. Came late to almost all lectures. Had no interest in any of the subjects. Chain smoker. Back bencher. Barely passed. Sometimes teachers gave him extra 2 or 3 marks in the exams just to push him over the line. We used to joke about him all the time, saying things like he is going to be the "filler" in the society for cleaning toilets in the local McDonald's.
10 years later, I stumbled upon his linkedin profile. The guy turned around his life and works as a director in a company of 200+ people, in Canada, and makes twice more than I make.

This one might dox me but a guy a few years younger than me set up a fake photographers website, posed online as a female, then received/took nude photos of women then blackmailed them into sex. He's currently in jail for multiple rapes. I was horrified at just how little media attention it got.

A primary school classmate got into petty crime, generally dodgy stuff like theft and then later burglary. He was killed by police after a brief standoff during a burglary (iirc). Avoidable if he’d just given himself up, but I think he was also under the influence of some substances that impaired his judgement. Left a partner and young kids.

Not a classmate but certainly a childhood friend of sorts of mine.
His father was known to be having inappropriate contact with underage girls so never really did see much of him after he was sent down for a few years. The mother became ill years down the line leaving him to be the carer for a while, only she died soon after leaving him unable to live there alone. He ended up homeless living on the streets for a while, making sure to visit his father who ended up suffering from dementia in his later years, getting fed by the nurses there.
I hadn't heard from him since secondary school for nearly two decades before all this was known to me, being made aware of his situation after recognising a long haired him in the local newspaper. One day after turning up for a visit to his father, he grabbed a ceramic ornament from a nearby shelf and attempted to batter his father to death due to years of resentment. After confessing to the attempted murder and sentenced to 8 years, he said his only regret was not managing to finish to job.

Not sure it's the most shocking, but a girl in my year was one of the 2 "prostitutes" that got Wayne Rooney into a bit of bother a few years back. I'm not sure she was a proper prostitute, possibly more of a chancer who couldn't turn down some easy money. She was as plain as beige at school, I barely even remember who she was.
BeachJenkins@reddit
I was the paper boy of one of the prostitutes mum and dad. She'd gone to stay with her parents, some paparazzi had tracked her down to the address and were waiting outside the house because they wanted pictures of her. I had to push through the paparazzi to deliver a newspaper to a family which their daughter was on the front cover of for having a threesome with Wayne Rooney. Was definitely a very surreal moment.

One guy whilst working as a club singer aged 16 (which was weird in itself) kidnapped a 14 year old and kept her tied to his radiator. He was sent down obviously.
A second guy, had everything sorted, was engaged to a literal model/beauty pageant winner and crashed his car at high speed killing his best mate in the passenger seat. Was sent down fur causing death by dangerous driving.
A third, against all odds (had a piece of shit dad), made himself a good load of money by buying and renovating property and then selling on. He then made a few bad choices, lost everything and is now a homeless drug addict. I often see him on my way home and stop and chat with him.
A fourth one is leaving Reddit comments about how others from his school have gone to shit as if he himself has his life sorted.

theres a bunch of rapists, suicides and pedos from my year.
The worst was the guy who beat up his drug dealer and took all his drugs. The dealer later tracked him down and cut his throat. There is a video on the internet of him dying, crawling across the pavement in a pool of blood his body made its last convulsions and he died right there next to the ambulance. The ambulance crew were locked inside waiting for the police to arrive before they got out as there was a knifeman on the loose.

I have a few. One stalked his ex-wife then committed suicide. At school he was obsessed with weapons and had a 'black list'. He was in his early 20s.
One couldn't cope with a break up and committed suicide. He was 17, I think.
One became a 'professional' athlete and then got a criminal record for stalking and battering his ex. Got a restraining order, too. Not that surprising as he raped a classmate when he was 16 so he was always a piece of shit.

I had a science teacher I loved so much. He was kind, funny, and really nurtured me as a young girl who was pretty mid at science.
So turns out he had been assigned a mentor for a girl in my class who was suffering from depression as he had experienced it too, and by the end of the year he slept with her on our prom night. They were together for 2 years before she let it slip to a friend, who did the right thing and told a staff member at school, who escalated it to the point he was quietly removed.
At this point, the rumours somehow gets about that he left because of cancer.
Anyway, they stay together. He, a bloke who must have been in his 50s, left his wife and kids for a 18 year old girl. I used to see him and his kids when I went swimming, before all this happened.
Anyway, she goes to university, studies the exact thing he taught (EW), she graduates and then just dies of a completely unexpected blood clot due to birth control.
Just a devastating story all round. Poor girl. If there is an afterlife I hope she's found inner peace.

Another fell into a conspiracy rabbit hole and never came out. Became paranoid about the world around him, his wife left, due to his odd behaviour he was only allowed supervised visits with his kids. Eventually he was so paranoid the government were targeting him with chemtrails he killed himself in a semi underground bunker he was trying to build.

There was a guy in my friend group who was always extremely odd, but seemed harmless, I always thought he probably had a level of learning difficulties. Nobody's quite sure how he ended up as part of our friend group but I think we probably collectively felt kind of sorry for him.
Anyway a few months after we left school, a bunch of us were sitting in the living room of another friend's house- he rented it off his dad and lived alone, so most of us were pretty much living there half the time. The weird dude had turned up with a suitcase earlier that day and asked my friend if he could stay for a few days as his grandparents, who he lived with, had thrown him out but wouldn't say why.
About 20 minutes later the doorbell rang and two police officers came in and cuffed the weird dude in the living room and took him away. We never saw him again.
Turned out he'd been sexually abusing his little cousin for years, who also lived with the grandparents. It kind of tied alot of loose ends up in hindsight, and as much as what he did was hideous, a part of me has always felt that it was also perhaps in some part kind of a sad symptom of a very disturbed kid from a very broken background.
Still, after that I never felt guilty about the time that we'd duct taped him to a lampost all night anymore!

A man I was in school with fell from a balcony while on holiday. In the immediate aftermath everyone assumed he'd either committed suicide or fallen in a drunken accident. At the inquest it turned out he was having a physical fight with his girlfriend and was running to push her off the balcony and she moved at the last second causing him to go over instead.
It came out there were a lot of previous incidents of domestic abuse that had been reported to police that his mum knew about, but they'd kept a secret from the rest of the family.
About six months after the inquest the mum committed suicide.
