How many folk remember Come Outside and Brum?

I know they're real but it feels like some kind of fever dream. If I try and mention them people look at me like I'm absolutely mental.
FaithAndABiscuit@reddit
Late 90s kid here, loved both. I remember my school having recordings of Come Outside on VHS and every time the spotty plane was turned on and the grass was blowing everyone said "look look she's mowing the grass" 😂 I also remember some other educational shows they recorded but i cant remember the names

"I caaaaan!" everyone gasps

I watched a compilation of these recently and it is far shorter than I remember and also EXACTLY the same every episode!
C_Major2024@reddit
Yeah loved Brum. I cried when my mum gave away my VHS of it.
The real question is, does anyone remember Tommy Zoom
Tru72@reddit
I have a 'pippin' dog... Tibetan terrier cross. My son used to watch Come Outside 👌
Agitated_Ad_361@reddit
They altered Brum in the last few years by changing the them tune to something then phenomenally American. Shame, I loved it when I was a kid.
SprintsAC@reddit
I was born in the mid 90s & have a lot of fond memories of both of these shows. 😊
TheNorthernMunky@reddit
My daughter would inexplicably burst into tears every time the Come Outside end music played. She wasn’t even that bothered about the show - barely watched it - but as soon as that music started she was beside herself.
iamnosuperman123@reddit
Would still show Come Outside to children in my class..
Do you remember Through the Dragon's Eye
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
Yes I remember this, in school we were never shown the first episode of Through the Dragon's Eye the teachers claimed the tape was missing, or someone forgot to press the record button
Moppo_@reddit
I only recently found out Brum is called such because he's from Birmingham, not because car go brum-brum.
buy_me_a_pint@reddit
Yes I remember the Riddlers
springsomnia@reddit
Come Outside was one of my favourite shows as a kid!
Paradiddles123@reddit
Come Outside was awesome. Used to watch it at school. El Nombre was also top tier.
Doobalicious69@reddit
Yes! Numbertime was excellent! "Greetings, little Juan!"
We also used to watch Cat's Eyes
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Wasn't El Nombre a segment in another show? Can't remember the name of it, but I have vague memories of someone slotting glass numbers into holes in a wall and them lighting up. I think there were a bunch of other related segments but I can't remember the names of any of them.
CNash85@reddit
Yes - it was part of Numbertime. El Nombre got his own show when they realised how popular he was.
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Numbertime that was it!
Paradiddles123@reddit
Not thinking of MegaMaths?
sam_p_23@reddit
El Nombre is still on YouTube. Been letting my daughter watch it to learn how to count*.
*that’s my excuse. Really it’s just for nostalgia purposes.

I was thrilled when I saw Brum IRL and he winked at me with his headlights.
Atlantis3311@reddit
Also Woof!
IcyPuffin@reddit
I remember those.
Not from my own childhood - they were not from that era. But I remember them from when my son was a kid. Probably weren't strictly his era either as im sure they were older kids shows that were on a re run, but it didnt matter, he watched them - as did i.
Huditut@reddit
My children loved them both when they were toddlers.
ettabriest@reddit
Mine too. Big cook little cook as well.
Huditut@reddit
Even now, I can't say desiccated coconut without pretending to be a train.

Welcome to our cafe 🎶
I've never forgotten that show before because of the common clip of "Be careful Ben" that is still seen on social media from time to time and then the little cook says "Don't worry ben, I'll just lick it up" when he gets icing or whatever it is on little cooks face 💀Out of context that clip will live forever.
ettabriest@reddit
I used to wonder if there were ‘adult ‘ double meanings in the show, doubt it but was funny thinking about it !

Of COURSE I remember them!

YES. And no one ever remembers Come Outside and people always look at me like I'm a bit crazy, so I'm glad this sub exists.

The 90s and early 2000s were a golden age for British children's television: Come Outside, Brum, the original teletubbies, the Tweenies, Balamory, Mr Tumble at his peak, thomas the tank engine, Postman Pat, the Wallace and Gromit shorts, Mr Bean, Chucklevision, Noddy, Bill and Ben (the flowerpot men), Bob the Builder, Tracy Beaker, Basil Brush, My Parents are Aliens, Bodger and Badger, Horrid Henry, Pingu, Raven, Pinky and the Brain, Dick and Dom in da Bungalow, Fireman Sam, Art Attack, Smart, Mona the Vampire, Dennis the Menace, Woody the Woodpecker, Get Your Own Back, Bamzooki, MI High, the Cramp Twins. Maybe I'm a bit biased, or maybe I'm just getting old, but most kids TV from in the night garden onwards is awful.
CranberryCheese1997@reddit
I remember both. Born in 1997. I remembered Brum immediately, but Come Outside, I'd forgotten the name of that show and had to quickly google it to rejog my memory. Both shows were still either being made or shown reguraly on TV when I was kid.
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Lynda Baron. She was also in Open All Hours, though arguably Come Outside is now her most famous role.
She died in 2022.
VerbingNoun413@reddit
Sadly true.
dh1805@reddit
Brum lives in the Cotswold Motoring Museum so 100% real
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
He'd drive out of Bourton on the Water, turn left, then all of a sudden he's 60 miles away in Birmingham!
StrangerAcceptable83@reddit
What does he do all day in the museum?
Reasonable_Blood6959@reddit
Mate, I still remember all the words to the Come Outside theme song. When I learnt Auntie Mable wasn’t actually flying with Pippin in the back I was heartbroken.
I was lucky enough a few years back to get to fly the type of plane she flew (not the exact one obviously), a Slingsby Firefly, couldn’t get the song out of my head the whole time.
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
There were three planes used in the show, two of them are still flying.
DillStrong44@reddit
I remember. They were my favourite shows. Every dog that looked like pippin was called pippin by me going forward. Any plane that went over I used to ask my mum if it was the lady from come outside. Also every camper van I saw I thought had sooty sweep and Sue in from the sooty show because they had one. I saw the brum car irl a few years ago at a classic car collection show. It took me right back.
jimjam_yaha@reddit
Loved Come Outside but as an adult I wonder why they thought an episode where Auntie Mable accidentally locks herself inside the pantry, with the chip pan left on which catches fire (Pippin saves the day of course), was an appropriate storyline for a preschool children's show. It used to scare me as a child!
EllebumbleB@reddit
I used to watch Come Outside with my son. She visited Keswick pencil museum & I learned how wellies are made. Brum was an odd little guy though.
TanjoCards@reddit
Brum was on TV in the Netherlands. International star that little car.
Songbird9125@reddit
Those two shows were my brother's jam when he was little. I'm 10 years older than him and I think Brum had been updated by the time he was watching it (early 2000s). I don't remember seeing Come Outside before my bro watched it but our mum remembered it :')

Come Outside was a staple in our house growing up. The only memory I have of Brum is when he was named 'Cunt of the Month' in a magazine once (I want to say NME or Vice or something).
gordonbennettsuncle@reddit
The Come Outside I thought you meant was a 1962 single by Wendy Richards off of Eastenders and Mike Sarne.
you_aint_seen_me-@reddit
Funny story. My wife's younger sister was always looking to one-up her eldest sister. So, one day she asks our youngest who her favourite auntie was, fully expecting our daughter to wax lyrical about her, following extended the sweets and crisps she bought her. Without missing a beat, our daughter replies "Auntie Mabel".
1fyuragi@reddit
I remember watching those shows with my kids. They loved them both.
My eldest son enjoyed a show called Bodger and Badger but now aged 28 he has no memory of it.

HenshinDictionary@reddit
Auntie Mabel is single-handedly responsible for climate change with her bloody plane.
(Also, she was in Doctor Who 3 times, which is an instant win for me.)
poppyedwardsPE@reddit
YESSSSS omg memory unlocked!!! I loved these shows!!!
batty_61@reddit
I remember Brum! My son was absolutely obsessed with him!
Annabelle_Sugarsweet@reddit
My kid still watches these on YouTube.
dy1anb@reddit
Mabel and her dog that kept running off. She never did get the hint that the dog really didn't like her
LAcasper@reddit
Brum seemed sinister but I loved that mad old bitch and her dog going to the shop in a plane
pelvviber@reddit
I recall the crazy dance scenes in Brum which were flimed in Brum. As a parent I wasn't the target audience but my children seemed to enjoy both programmes. If things went Pete Tong back in that time you'd hear some, or all of us chorus - "Oh, Pippin!"
DaHappyCyclops@reddit
Brum is a very irresponsible, potentially dangerous road user and i for one am glad hes been properly detained and kept off British roads entirely for the last 30 years.
I dunno if its the eyes (other user suggestions) I dunno if its the frequent low shots that make Brum appear larger? Perhaps the expressionless cold inflections of his windscreen wipers, or maybe the mouth-too-small/tongue-to-large Toyah Wilcock commenting on his frequently non DVLA recommended shenanigans... but something about that little steampunk creep puts me on edge.
DeifniteProfessional@reddit
I remember for absolutely no reason being scared of Come Outside. I'm certain I used to love watching it, but then randomly got scared they'd get stuck in the plane and started avoiding watching it. I was a weirdly autistic kid though.
I remember Brum but I think that was something my mum enjoyed watching rather than me.
I loved Tots TV
SiteWhole7575@reddit
Brum was hardly ever filmed in Brum apart from the title screens. And he was a wanker.
lovesorangesoda636@reddit
I remember both and they're one of the "approved" shows we've got for our 2yr old!
He flipping loves them both!
blainy-o@reddit
I have more memories of Come Outside than I do of Brum, but yes I remember them both.
mightbeyourpal@reddit
I proudly wear my Come Outside t-shirt on the regular. A big ol' pic of Aunty Mabel and my main man Pippin. I'm a style guru
EmbalmedCoconut@reddit (OP)
It's all in the eyes. Like how The Polar Express has always creeped me out. The EYES.
Obvious-Water569@reddit
My wife remembers Come Outside fondly.
When I was at the age for both Come Outside and Brum, I didn't live in this country so, while I know about them, I don't have any childhood memories of them.
