I’m not a car guy, but I want to be!

I’m not sure what bug bit me recently, but I’ve somehow gotten it in my head to restore an old car and enjoy driving it around my small town.
The thing is, I know the actual bare minimum about cars. I’ve maintained some farm equipment over the years, but that’s where my knowledge stops. I was thinking of buying a book or two and learning as I go after spending a few grand on something old with some character to it.
Is this a fools errand? Should I kill this dream before it starts and save myself the trouble?
If not, do you have any resources you’d suggest for a complete beginner?
Thanks for reading, I appreciate your time.
