Someone sprinted full-speed at my car late at night, what would you have done?

Bit of a weird one, and I’m still trying to process it properly.
Tonight around 9:30pm, I was dropping my girlfriend off at her flat in the center. Just before we turned onto her street, we saw this guy who was topless, absolutely covered in tattoos head to toe, just walking. We glanced over briefly (as you do), but didn’t say or do anything.
As I turned the corner onto her street, my girlfriend suddenly says, “Oh my god babe, he’s chasing us.” I looked in the mirror and no joke, he’s sprinting at us like Usain Bolt, straight towards my car, and fast. Not shouting, not saying anything, just full-speed, out of nowhere.
Instinct kicked in and I drove off quickly, turned a few corners, and did a few laps around the area to make sure he wasn’t following. Ended up picking up my brother who lives around the corner and heading back to drop her off safely. Luckily he was gone by then, but I haven’t stopped thinking about it, as she's seen him before around the town center.
I’m not used to stuff like this. I grew up in a small town in another country where everyone knows each other, looks out for one another, and things like this just don’t happen. So I’m not sure whether I overreacted or underreacted.
Would you have reported it? What would you have done differently?
Keen to hear what others would’ve done in the same situation.
decidedlyindecisive@reddit
Tl;dr: Drugs.
So I used to know someone who was whippet thin and I got talking to him about running (I was a runner myself at the time). Turns out he ran because he did fuckloads of speed and then would just run full pelt around the city. He was quite twitchy and extremely paranoid so I could easily imagine him running at cars he thought were out to get him.
thatlad@reddit
One big massive assumption here and a personal anecdote that has no direct bearing on this situation.
For all you know this could have a psychotic break. Someone warm so had their top off and was running after them to let them know their brake light was out. Or they could have just been a runner, running in the same direction.
But no, you go straight to drugs.

Have you bought a car on finance since the year 1365? Did you once look at a Volvo? Has your partner crossed a road where someone once thought about driving a Skoda until they realised they took a wrong turn?
Imagine entering just a FEW simple details* and suddenly every car you've ever owned, driven, sat in or looked at pops up! You could be owed up to £6534.27 in compensation! We take only 94% of your claim! The remaining 6% will be subject to fees. Contract is for your lifetime and applies to every vehicle you will ever own.
*a few simple details means you entire life history and all of your financial information. Your data will be retained and sold to China or the next highest bidder.

On Friday I left the house early to get to the Wimbledon queue, and I had very similar thing to what OP described, but I was on foot. I ran half of the way to the train station cos some overweight cunt (I'm 6′4, and he was taller than me and hugely overweight) drugged out of his mind started chasing me.
I was walking down an alley, and he was just at the end making eye contact with me, and poledancing in the air (best description of his drugged up behaviour I can give you). I nodded at him, and he nodded back. Then he started walking after me, and as I sped up, he did too. Then each time I looked around he stopped. When I walked full speed he started clip clappering after, so I just went flat out.
Eventually he gave up and disappeared.

WhyDidIDoItSoSad@reddit
I’m also keen on the answers here. Long ago I went on a drive with my grandfather which was extremely rare and it was at night. We were driving down the road where we live and it’s usually very quiet and this woman appears in the road. There’s make up all running down her face and her shirt is hanging on by a thread, she almost threw herself onto the cars bonnet. My grandfather slowed down out of worry of hitting her and she was banging on the car screaming and my grandfather freaked out and drove away.
I still think about her. I sometimes wondered if she was in danger.
williamshatnersbeast@reddit
I’m either really stupid and this is a pop culture reference I’m not getting or your Grandfather drove away from someone who, from your own description, sounded like they’d possibly just been assaulted, maybe even suffered an attempted rape?
Of course she could’ve just been a nutter I guess.
But really I’m hoping I’m just very stupid.
WhyDidIDoItSoSad@reddit
That was my take - that he thought she was a nutter.
My grandfather doesn’t go out. Currently he hasn’t been out in about 10 years. He has a ton of health issues and just prefers to stay at home. This ride with him was extremely rare so I think he got freaked out and that’s why he drove away. He did mutter something like “silly woman!” This was at least 15 years ago if not more. I was freaked out too. You never see women wondering around the area at night where I live. It came off as very eerie. But from time to time she shows up in my memory.
Super_Matter_6139@reddit
Personally I wouldn't of reported it.. I wouldn't even need to "processed it" as you say..

Captain_Kruch@reddit
A similar thing happened to me some time ago, when I was shopping one evening. As I was walking to my car, this skinny, scruffy-looking bloke approached me and asked me for some change. Of course I had money, but I don't duke my change to beggars, least of all ones that accost me in the street. Anyway, I politely but firmly told him I had no cash on me and got in my car. He was about 30 feet away from me at this point but started running towards me as though he was about to either smash my window or carjack me. Without thinking, I hit the accelerator and drove away. Not a nice situation to be in, and it just demonstrates the kind of scum that are allowed to mingle in with today's polite society.

broadarrow39@reddit
Sounds like you did the right thing. Had a group of very shading looking eastern European guys approach my car once in Luton. One of them gestured at me to wind down the window, when I ignored him the rest of the group who were sitting around outside a shop started making their way over. I dumped it into reverse and got the hell out of there.
Dramatic-Doctor-7386@reddit
Just for contrast, my very shady looking Eastern European neighbours used to hang around outside for no real reason and it turned out they just wanted to smoke rollies and pet my dog when I walked him. They were super helpful and polite it turned out. No harm done. :)
ServerLost@reddit
You did exactly the right thing well done, not easy under pressure. Sounds very much like that person was either drunk or tweaking and thought your glance meant more than it did. 0% chance he remembers you or your partner tomorrow.

AlwaysCreamCrackered@reddit
You should have reported it as soon as you could have but I'd say you acted as most people would by getting the hell away from there asap.
I know you'll probably get people saying you should have mowed him down etc but I'm sure in that situation, getting away is actually a lot easier and less traumatic than actually committing to flooring it over someone.
South_Leek_5730@reddit
I'm not sure what they would make of "I saw a tattooed man with his top off running towards my car without gesturing and so I floored it round the centre". There could be many reasons he was running. Maybe he was late for a tea party.
edgrant1992@reddit

ChiliSquid98@reddit

spaceshipcommander@reddit
I wouldn't. I know someone who was driving past Anfield after a football match and a bloke stepped out in front of him and jumped on the bonnet of his car. Well more laid on it I guess. A few month's later he was dragged in by the police for hitting a pedestrian and failing to stop. The bloke who jumped on his bonnet actually reported him for a hit and run.
neilm1000@reddit
So what happened? Did your mate have action taken against him?
spaceshipcommander@reddit
Nothing happened because it was bollocks but he did have to drive up to Liverpool magistrates court and miss a day of work. Maybe it was the police station? Either way he definitely had to miss a day of work to go up there which is 2 hours away.

bbshdbbs02@reddit
Run the cunt over 😂. I doubt any court would charge someone who ran over an aggressive man chasing their who could’ve had a weapon on him or wanted to try and steal the car.
SeniorMoonlight21@reddit
Well its not a textbook example for reasonable force at all. If you are in a car in that situation you can simply drive away. Yes he kept chasing them, but at no point were they trapped and in danger since they could literally just keep driving away. There is no chance you'd get away with self defence for hitting someone with a car in OPs situation.
If it was a different situation where you were trapped in a car, perhaps in a car park or a garage and the only way to escape was to run over an attacker blocking your way. However thats nowhere close to what happened.
PatTheCatMcDonald@reddit
Nonsense. The prosecution would ask why you did not avoid trouble by moving away. You wouldn't have a reasonable answer.
bbshdbbs02@reddit
The crazy guy started the trouble. They were trying to move away but the guy kept chasing after the vehicle on foot.

More nonsense, you are suggesting a pedestrian could outrun a car. You would be the one looking and sounding like a cunt.

Some shirtless, tattooed idiot ran across the road and stopped dead with his arms in the air right in front of a bus I was on the other week.
I'll give the bus driver this, he stopped it literally inches away from the idiot, within seconds- you're talking Formula 1 levels of reaction.
It actually gets worse. Further on in the journey, we're presented by what seems to be a second drunk, shirtless idiot, who this time starts running alongside the bus.
The driver naturally slows down, and it's a bloody good job he did, because as we rounded the bend it became extremely apparent that Idiot #2 may not be as much of an idiot as initially presumed, and that he was chasing after two horses loose on the road.
I actually have (slightly blurry, but identigiable) photos of the horses because it was quite so much of a "WTF???"
So anyway, short version, I absolutely believe OP

Drive off. This is one reason I always back in to any parking space.
A couple of years ago I was parking up near my sister's and a road man type on a push bike came in front of me and motioned me to wind the window, I let it down a crack and he was on about buying weed but then a couple more dickheads appeared and were circling and trying to block me in. At least one clearly had a large knife tucked in his joggers. I told them to get out the way and started revving in the end, they moved when I started to accelerate but I had made the decision to plow through them if needed. There was a bad spate of carjackings round there with people coming home from work.
Obviously, a car is a very lethal weapon but if you are being assaulted or threatened by people who may be carrying weapons then sometimes you have to prioritise your safe egress.
PatTheCatMcDonald@reddit
Probably mistaken identity. He thought he recognized you or the car.
Possible it might be your girlfriend he recognized or thought he did.
Anyway, such can happen anywhere in the world. It's not just the UK.

Reminds me of a story from a teenage years when this ca screeched past me and pulled up. These three guys got out, leaving their doors open and started pegging it.
I stood for a moment going wow those guys are after someone!
And then it dawned on me.
They were running at me!
I was on my bike and without further hesitation I pulled off. Thank god I was in a low gear and accelerated fast.
I decided against trying to explain they must have the wrong person.
I was also lucky that there was a closed off road that I could go down on my bike, but they couldn't follow me in a car. Never ridden faster in my life.
I was like 16 or something and they guys were adults
