Home ownership

just one? but there's so many things, so i'll go top 3
car is dying, turbo is fucked, still runs but needs replacing before it dies horribly.
garden fence is fucked, needs replacing.
also need a bigger house, have outgrown ours but can't afford to move anywhere bigger.
gogginsbulldog1979@reddit
I'm working in a job I can do, but dislike.
I've been in the same sector since 1999 and I'm bored of it. I'd love to retrain and do something else, but it would mean a HUGE wage drop, so I'm stuck doing it.
Money would mean I could retrain and do something I'd enjoy, not endure purely for the wage.

Golden handcuffs. I hope work gets better for you

I think your issue would be something similar to mine... my house doesn't suffer with mould so to speak... but there's a lot of work that needs doing... an 80-year-old house, that's had decades of neglect and patchwork has started to take its toll.
Must've spent about £8k on a new basic kitchen... but half the funds went on completely revamping it to brick and sorting out random holes in brick work.
BrieBro_@reddit
OP do you rent that property? If so, it's not your job to fix a leak, it's your landlords. It's also a massive health hazard so he's legally obligated to get it sorted ASAP
Intrepid_Bearz@reddit
Money could solve every problem I have right now but no idea where to start.
Ideally I’d get a carer for my husband so I can take a break from full time caring.
Practically, this house is falling apart and needs fixing up so we can sell up and move nearer the hospital for all his appointments.
LimpNetwork7333@reddit
If you own this house your insurance may cover repairs. If you rent, your landlord needs to fix the issue.

Being able to buy a wheelchair accessible car would mean my Mum wouldn't be restricted to places I can push her (and our sparse rural bus service) Her world would open back up and we could make so many more memories in the time she has left.
Confuseduseroo@reddit
I have zero problems which would be solved by money. Which is not to say I don't have problems, only that money is not the answer to any of them.
FWIW money doesn't fix mould either. Pull up the carpet, ventilate. If you can run to a bottle of bleach that will kill the spores.

Money would solve both of these problems

I’m one of the unlucky suckers that bought an ex council house with RAAC in the roof. No idea how I’m going to afford to fix it.
Pockysocks@reddit
Buying a house would be neat.

Tell me about it!

Since you are renting, you need to get the landlord to fix this.
It's not your job to get it sorted.
Chimpville@reddit
How much of an area does that cover? is it on the ground floor and what is the floor below? The fix might not be as awful as all that.
I only ask as I recently relaid a big chunk of flooring at a house my mum bought, replacing all the rotten, mouldy boards and insulation. It was fairly easy and cheaper than I anticipated, having looked hard for the materials 2nd hand on facebook. It was on the ground floor and on top of a concrete sub-base though, so I only needed to find new boards, insulation and a damp proof membrane.
To answer your question; buy solar and battery to bring down crazy energy bills and feel a little more secure about them going forward.
Amazing_Course3348@reddit (OP)
I need to do some proper measurements but it’s about an average room size. Thankyou so much for sharing this. Can I ask what the rough cost was? I was quoted a few thousand and I really can’t afford that
Total_HD@reddit
Morning,
What’s the core of the problem? Where is the water getting in?
Chimpville@reddit
So I only needed to replace a section up against a wall - the rot had only gotten so far. It was a strip about 1m x 3m and it only cost me about £50 in materials because I looked for 2nd hand leftovers from other renovations. Do you think you need to replace the whole floor?
In my case the floor construction was really simple; it had a concrete base and the only damp parts were the boards themselves, and the insulation underneath - though I could possibly have salvaged that by cleaning it and treating it.
Tools wise I only needed the basics: circular saw, drill/driver, straight edges, levels and basic hand tools.
I was initially quoted over a grand to have it done professionally and nearly took it, but then I decided there was only so much harm I could do by having a look, and lifted a board to see what needed replacing. It didn't look all that hard so I decided to give it a go.
Carpenters are really skilled and will charge skilled wages with all their other business overheads on top, but not every carpentry job needs a carpenter. They're also quoting taking into account things they don't know which may complicate the job and eat into their profit by taking more time and materials.
I'd suggest having a bit of an explore as to what kind of floor it is, what needs replacing and then looking for some guides online if it's not too terrible. How handy are you? If you reckon you can lift a board up and get a few pictures without making the problem worse? If so it's definitely worth giving a go, if only to get better advised quotes in the future.

Pretty sure money would solve literally all my problems right now. For a start I've been on a waiting list for several health issues, I'd go straight to a private clinic if I had the sudden windfall for it.
BaronSamedys@reddit
I've never actually been in this position before and it's only just occurred to me because you asked this question.
I don't have any problems that require money to solve. Unless I'm missing something. Can't think of anything and I also have the money to resolve it if I'm missing something not worth thinking about.
I have problems but money won't do anything to alleviate them.
I've been a bit of a miserable bastard of late. This just made me give my head a wobble. Cheers OP.
This wasn't intended to be a brag if it comes across that way.
I'm honestly chuffed. Nice one.

I don’t have any problems that can be fixed with money. If a problem were to arise, I have the money for it.
Can money make life more comfortable? Sure
The problems I have, can’t be fixed with money, they are in God and fates hands. For all else, it’s me and the sweat of my brow.
Saronus1@reddit
Air conditioning. Room too hot? Cool it down until you're comfortable.
Most also work as heaters, so could be used when it gets cold as well.
Would massively improve my sleep quality at the moment.
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
I'd love to have enough money to decorate and carpet my home. I have lived here 21 years and it hasn't been decorated in that time. The carpets are the same age and they were cheap carpet I could afford back then.
I'd also like to have my front and back gardens sorted out. I'm not a garden person but I do what I can but have a disability so I can't do much. I have the idea of what I'd like to do, it's not expensive and would be manageable.
It does get me down with how shit everything looks but it isn't something I can change immediately.

Health both physical and mental.
Currently dealing with a suspected herniated disc. In a lot of pain and having to deal with NHS waiting lists to get it sorted. Then mental health isn’t great as currently unemployed and self esteem/anxiety problems on top of the back problems are making it hard to find a new job. If I had money I could pay for private physio and therapy. Once I’m healthy and earning again the rest of my problems should get at least a little easier.
Amazing_Course3348@reddit (OP)
Oh gosh, I’m sorry to hear this 🥹 herniated disk and anxiety, really not fun! If there’s any way I could help please let me know. Thankyou! I’ve been quoted a few thousand to fix it all, I can’t really afford that at the moment so I’ve just been dousing the floor in white vinegar, seems silly but it’s what I can do at the moment
naynaeve@reddit
Oh dear, I had mould issues for years. My son was constantly ill. We moved last December. Since then he only got sick once or twice. I hope you win a lottery soon.
Amazing_Course3348@reddit (OP)
I hear you. I’m constantly ill. My eyes burn and my sinuses are constantly infected. I’m glad to hear your son is better now. Thankyou and thankyou for giving me hope 🥹❤️

Freedom to do what I want, instead of being tied to a job that I dislike.
Probably a pretty common one tbh.
Amazing_Course3348@reddit (OP)
Oh agree freedom is a big one
Other_Nothing2436@reddit
Uh that's really not good, how much would it cost to fix?
Amazing_Course3348@reddit (OP)
Yeah honestly I have so many health issues because of this, I’ve been told a rough estimate would be a few thousand to fix the roof which is the cause of the leak, and then to replace the whole floor
PavlovaToes@reddit
Me, my daughter, and my best friend share a bedroom. We share a tiny 1 bedroom flat together... there's no room, it's massively overcrowded, and I am trying to find us a bigger place to live rn
Money would fix all of that for us...
