It is always nice to see people instinctively rushing to help
EffectiveLink4781@reddit
I don't know why but the golf cart made me laugh. Dude's riding his trusty stead into danger to do what he can. Trusty steads used to be cooler I think.
rcbif@reddit
I've done the same once, and it felt like I could have jumped off the cart and ran faster while driving to the scene of the accident to see if the guy was ok.
Witnessed another accident a few months later that I was also first responder to, and hopped into the SUV of a friend who was known to keep the keys in it and hauled ass down the runway.
Luckily no major injuries in either accident.
stupidstu187@reddit
Reminds me of when Top Gear reviewed the Nissan GTR years ago. Jeremy Clarkson hurt his neck while driving and pulled over on the side of the track. The ambulance comes as expected but the guy mowing the grass shows up on his riding lawn mower to help.

greasyprune@reddit
I thought the same thing, but if someone broke their leg, it might be nice to ride the cart?
Kand1ejack@reddit
Yeah the guy riding the cart is bringing a potential ambulance to the scene, so not really as silly as it looks
Illustrious-Cover792@reddit
Right, I’d probably stay back from the burning jet fuel.

It was a King Air twin crash in the UK today. Anywhere from 6 to 15 people.

Maybe they are just trying to get there instead of running a giant circle around it. Yeah, we see it here without the tunnel vision, adrenaline, and panic, we can take time to make better decisions. These guys did exactly what we would hope anyone would do; answer a call for help.
Raise a glass to those who dared and those who tried.
ah__yessir@reddit
Omg this.
ArnoldWurst@reddit
I mean in some comments it seemed more like advice for someone who reads this and wants to be a better first responder. And the first rule of first response is making sure you are not dying in the process of saving someone.
Not saying that putting your life on the line for someone else isnt admirable and heroic.
But i want to see such people survive as often as possible.
But even professionally trained first responders might react wrong if they dont manage to keep emotions in the background.
And if your golfing and suddenly a plane crashes next to you, an untrained person, then obviously you dont remember that one safety guideline you heard +10 years ago in school once.
If your instincts tell you to help instead of run away that nothing but positive.
You need brave people in a terrible situation like that.
Rhaynebow@reddit
I’m gonna call BS on this. These comments are classic goalpost moving. These people in the video are not on their phones, not just standing there, none of the things Redditors hate to see in their disaster videos. They’re literally running towards the danger and yet Redditors are STILL finding ways to criticize them. I’m sure if these guys knew which direction to run in, Redditors would say some people aren’t fit enough to help.
No one’s reading their comments thinking it’s sound advice for a future first responder. All they’re gonna see is further proof that Redditors are never satisfied and will nitpick over everything.
ArnoldWurst@reddit
All i said was that some comments are meant that way.
Sure many people just think their sliver of knowledge would be key here and the world needs to know that they would have done better; everyone is a navy seal-astronaut-brain surgeon behind the keyboard.
But critique is a good thing, especially in emergency situations and repeating good advice should not be seen as something negative.
Obviously you need to be respectful with criticism.
If someone just comments "they are brave but should be careful with the smoke", that might sound preachy, but i think we should always point out stuff that couldve been done better. Even if that information is not really new for most.
Know-it-alls that dislike other people getting the due spotlight for bravery and try to karma farm make this platform worse, thats for sure.
But if the information is not false... just ignore them you know.
Farming attention without getting attention will grow boring quickly for them.
lutzauto@reddit
Don't share knowledge because it pisses of this Internet baby
TheSaucyCrumpet@reddit
That's not why they're doing it.
They're doing it as a performance, to demonstrate to the rest of the people in this thread how knowledgeable they are about this issue. You see it every time something like this pops up, people criticising untrained members of the public's poor technique, all to show off how much better they'd have handled the situation if they were there.
AlwaysLurkNeverPost@reddit
Isn't that a false assumption? You are assuming all of these people with the correct and helpful advice are all doing it for clout; how do you know they are not doing it as a form of genuine information sharing? It's basically a less emotional / more pragmatic version of thoughts and prayers. It does nothing in reality but maybe it's helpful in the future.
Besides, let's assume you're right, they're doing it for clout. Who cares? Is that harming you? Even if they are doing it for "look at me" reasons, they are at the same time giving the correct information that perhaps some didn't consider. So accidentally being potentially beneficial even if not caring to.
The point is -- it is ironic the people whining about the "Internet experts" criticizing technique, as you yourself are now criticizing the Internet experts. You're no better, you're just getting your clout from being "holier than thou" by being "above" giving reactionary advice. And now I have ironically entered this same cycle.
TheSaucyCrumpet@reddit
It's only a false assumption if I'm wrong.
AlwaysLurkNeverPost@reddit
I mean you generalized/stereotyped, so the stats do not weigh in your favour at all in terms of being "right".
TheSaucyCrumpet@reddit
If I generalised then that points to being more likely right than not. It's called a generalisation because it's generally the case.
AlwaysLurkNeverPost@reddit
Yes, generally. Which means "most but not all" or perhaps even just "majority" which is 51%.
That means there are also many cases where you are wrong.
Do I have to spell it out for you that you are equating that because you are correct on "most cases", you are therefore applying a false assumption to all other cases? Lol
The irony of you digging your heels in on this shows your more out for "winning on the internet" then the people you are accusing. Projection is a defense mechanism. ...
Also as I said before, doesn't matter what the intent is (bad or good, clout or knowledge sharing), ultimately is it a "bad thing" for people to be informed that they should second guess running straight into toxic fumes, as opposed to upwind?
TheSaucyCrumpet@reddit
No, obviously it's not a bad thing, just like filming yourself doing something nice to post on your instagram is still doing something nice, just ultimately self serving. I really didn't think I needed to spell that out though.
AlwaysLurkNeverPost@reddit
Yes, it's ultimately self-serving, but is ultimately net positive. That's my point you're evidently missing.
But let's go back to the route then -- again, you are assuming that every single one is self serving, which just isn't true.
TheFourTruthz@reddit
I wonder if any of them have actually ever tried to help in any way, rather than sit there giving unsolicited "advice". Reddit is full of these weirdos.

Heavy-Echidna-3473@reddit
In fairness, you never know what kind of evidence you could pick up by simply recording the aftermath.
OneT_Mat@reddit
For sure, not denying that. At least they’re running in the right direction and I Really feel in that moment some humans are genuinely seeing if there is anything thst can possibly be done to help. Even when it looks this grim.
theJudeanPeoplesFont@reddit
For sure. I don't mean to deny their instinct to help. The whole phone thing is just a remarkable development in human behavior.

Down vote all you want just because you want to hear the truth. Terrible things have happened to people who had the best intentions. This also applies to spectators that run to the scene to look. The Halifax explosion was such an example. Many people rushed close to the scene and the ships exploded killing many.

Terrible things have happened to people who made calculated decisions, like the 345 fdny firefighters and paramedics who died on 9/11

I have no idea what they thought they could do without firefighting equipment. I mean most people will run from a fire but these guys run to a fire. Safe-Midnight-3960@reddit
It’s a small plane, those make up most crashes anyway. It’s not to be unexpected. It’s large aircraft that are out of the usual.
itsOkami@reddit
True, but even then, we've had many other scary accidents this year so far, more than I can remember from previous ones
BeachHut9@reddit
Fat lot of good that the golf buggies and their drivers can do.
beautifulbug432@reddit
My family was due to fly into Southend Airport last night when the plane crashed - next day and STILL no information about casualties??? Something seems off
Vogel-Kerl@reddit
Maybe approach the accident from up wind?
Complete_Glass_930@reddit
I don’t think these people understand stand up wind vs down wind. Always approach from the Upwind side or the smoke will be blowing right at you!
fleets87@reddit
Or maybe they're just adrenalised and panicky and don't realise to do that.
ExoticMangoz@reddit
What’s going on with everyone calling it a “12-metre plane”?
LiveFlightDeck@reddit
Did they survive? What was the cause?
MavenAloft@reddit
It’s nice to rush and help, but try not to approach downwind.
GarlicThread@reddit
Indeed, that's a great way to give professional emergency rescuers extra work by adding oneself to the casualty list.
MavenAloft@reddit
Exactly, first responders may need to divert resources to help you when it would be unnecessary if one follows proper precautions. Secondly, you can’t be of any help if you also become overwhelmed from the hazard. Last, think about your future too.
Sad-Bus-7460@reddit
I don't know why you're being downvoted, the first rule of first aid training (or at least wilderness first aid) is "Do not make yourself a casualty"
barnacle_ballsack@reddit
I get that but I do like seeing people help. Seems rare these days.
Sad-Bus-7460@reddit
Media leaves the helpers out. They're still there, never stop looking for them <3
solocmv@reddit
Sorry. Exactly where are the ‘Professional Emergency Rescuers ? Go and at very least try! Be a human being!
JamezzzBuilds@reddit
I wonder if that's actually gonna help though... seems like they're getting in the way of the firefighters
CalligrapherLeft6038@reddit
Yeah it totally seems like there are loads of firefighters on the golf course desperately trying to make their way through the hordes of obstructive golfers.
MrPine5@reddit
Learned that lesson being a nosy 10 year old going to the block behind me to see a house on fire. Walked into a horrible smoke screen and couldn’t see anything for what felt forever.
Hindu-Dindu-69@reddit
Do you reckon this happened because of:
Indian pilots?
Indians on maintenance?
Or genuine freak accident?
I would say it’s #3 but the UK is flooded so I think 1 or 2 is more likely.

MavenAloft@reddit
Good questions. The Indians one I could not comment on simply because I have never trained with Indians and I am not familiar their their training protocols and how they are evaluated. I have trained with a number of people from various nations at CAE. Some nations training and evaluations are below par in my opinion, but I cannot say one way or the other about India.
The same with their maintenance. I am completely unfamiliar with their practices.
Freak accident? I’m skeptical, but it could be likely. There is little reason to have your hands near the fuel switches during this phase of flight, even when an emergency comes up. However, I am not familiar with 787 emergency procedures. All of my flying is in business jets.

It is so odd to watch people driving/running into the column of (hazardous?) smoke instead of going upwind of the incident.
Perhaps there was some other reason, like an access road or path they are moving toward.
towell420@reddit
A lot if not most people are not trained in hazardous conditions and the response required to not make them victims while trying to help.
nobodyisfreakinghome@reddit
That’s not how human instinct works though.
towell420@reddit
Yes, that’s why we take training to understand how I can become a victim trying to save a Coworkers life!
nobodyisfreakinghome@reddit
Regular people trying to help others in need don’t take training.
towell420@reddit
That’s why my original comment holds true. Why you down voting?
CassassinCatto@reddit
Maybe they're trying to see if they can help. To be honest, if I was there I'd be seeing if there was anyone I could help. Or calling 999.
HipHopAllotment@reddit
Exactly this… my response would be to go and try assist at all in any way, and hope if I was on wrong end of sommat like this there’d be someone like me on the outside running to help
CySnark@reddit
I understand the running to help, but running to help from inside the column of smoke could also make you into someone else who needs help. Approaching from above in clear air would seem to be a more logical path.
PullTheGreenRing@reddit
Aircraft accidents can be dangerous in many ways like this. Probably not applicable in this instance but some aircraft have something called hydrazine, nasty stuff if you’re exposed.
Fly4Vino@reddit
Hydrazine more likely to be found in a crashed rocket. Perhaps a mil aircraft
PullTheGreenRing@reddit
I know certain military aircraft have hydrazine in them.

Sometimes people just react. It's like people running up to a burning car to help the people inside. They're trying to save lives, even at the cost of their own. How about you stop monday-morning quarterbacking people who are doing something you probably would never do?
jbenbrook99@reddit
This is my golf club, they wouldn’t have been able to get to the crash spot without scaling a 8ft fence with barbed wire regardless of whether they’re up wind or downwind.
The crash looks narrowly inside the airport boundaries.
micahpmtn@reddit
Trying to help in any way they can. As most people would do.
max1padthai@reddit
The smoke. Everyone's running towards the wrong direction.
zymurginian@reddit
Yep. Approach from uphill and upwind.
TehChid@reddit
Can you explain this more?
Equivalent_Passion50@reddit
You don’t know what’s on fire. Smoke is bad for you as it is. Uphill and upwind keeps you out of the bad smoke, and out of anything running downhill like liquid.
Superb-Sympathy5779@reddit
That smoke is literally toxic as hell, all manner of composite materials and god only knows what else, one breath can be enough to kill you… maybe not that second but it will catch up to you.
