Single people, what do you do with your annual leave?
Posted by Milvus-Milvus@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 163 comments
I have a lot of time off over summer, unfortunately not a lot of money, so I can’t go away, and even more unfortunately my friends and family don’t have much time off at all. So what do you do with your time off?
cbawiththismalarky@reddit
My house is designed exactly for me, I don't see why i need to go or do anything more than live in it while i've got time off
bobsburgers1174@reddit
Ngl, I don’t have a social life at all and like to keep to myself so don’t really have friends. so whenever I take leave it’s usually just to get away from work and recharge. I just hang out at home doing nothing exciting. Maybe build some Lego, go to the cinema by myself.
I’d like to travel that would be fun but I have negative confidence 😂 so I just don’t do much off anything, but I’m happy
duvagin@reddit
Bold of you to assume I get any annual leave
No_Building_1568@reddit
May be some opportunities to volunteer locally. That’s rewarding and a great way of meeting people.

When single, I had outdoorsy hobbies that were best in summer and not particularly expensive.
Take up a new hobby maybe?

Whatever you like! That’s the joy of being single 🥰

Read. Recharge. Find free places to go, visit museums. Take a flask and sit in the park. Make things, cook fresh meals. Bake.
williamshatnersbeast@reddit
Museums is one of the best answers anyone could give. So many amazing things to see and you can spend hours and hours in any one museum, often for free.
n0d3N1AL@reddit
Surely I'm not alone in saying I've never visited a museum I've enjoyed, they're all so boring.
GiveMeBleachPlease@reddit
I agree mate don’t worry
n0d3N1AL@reddit
Clearly we're in the minority judging by the downvotes!
GiveMeBleachPlease@reddit
Opinions are subjective, the downvote button is cringe
Makes sense to me though, the type of people who go to museums seem like the type of people to spam ping a downvote.

Think about how fucking pointless my life is.
Been off this past week, hated being off and hate the idea of going back. Been for walks, seen mates, been to classes. Kept busy but haven’t enjoyed any of it.
Piptoporus@reddit
Sometimes when things that "should" feel enjoyable aren't enjoyable any more it can be a sign that you're living with depression or really burnt out - maybe it might help to talk to someone about what you're experiencing at the moment?
A97S_@reddit
Been depressed most of my life, already pissing money away on a therapist. Thanks though.

throwthrowthrow529@reddit
People at work think it’s crazy that I book time off and don’t go abroad.
I had Thursday Friday off last week - Thursday I did a 15k run, napped, swapped out a few plug sockets for new ones, went to the gym.
Friday, again went to the gym, played play station for a few hours, ate well, ran 10k
Saturday did another 10k then sat in the sun for 2/3 hours, went to the gym. Then played PlayStation with the boys and watched Netflix.
Sunday - big walk for 4 hours in the sun.
I’m off next week and I’ll train and run every day, and tie in some walks around them.
I want my time off to be as relaxing and enjoyable as possible and for me that’s training and playing games, and exploring walks.
Not sitting in an airport.
The_Deadly_Tikka@reddit
Whatever I want. Usually play a game, read a book, watch some TV.
Stuff outside the house, pick a pub that's nice and far away and go for a long walk and enjoy a nice cold beer in the garden just to walk back. Maybe go swimming, picnic etc.
I basically do all the same stuff I would if I wasn't single
shsgdgebehsgs@reddit
Clean, organise, rearrange furniture, restore bits around the house, DIY, tip runs, gardening, life admin, selling shit on vinted/ebay/marketplace. The rest of the time I'm asleep or catching up on video games I haven't had time to play.
Defiant-Cupcake-8984@reddit
Go to the cinema, the beach. Lots of walks and bike rides if the weather is decent, where I can stop off at a pub for a drink and read whatever book I'm reading at the time on my kindle.
If I have the money I will go on holiday somewhere.
bunnyswan@reddit
I'm not but if I was, I would do a day trip to the nearest sea side and take a picnic and paddle and watch the sea, I'd also just potter around..
I'd go swimming at the local leisure centre, or maybe get a day pass to a health club or spa if budget allowed.
I would go to the cinema.
Go on long walks.
Picnic.
gogginsbulldog1979@reddit
When I was single, most of my annual leave was for hangovers and monstrous drug comedowns.
lepan06@reddit
The only time I’ve had time off work and been single I had just turned 18, didn’t do much except see friends, eat shit and ended up having 1-2 drinks a day as I found it made me tired and I could sleep. Also made me realise 2 weeks is too much time off in one go as it throws me out of wack and I don’t wanna go back to work lol
raccoonsaff@reddit
- See friends and family
- Do stuff on my own - days out like museums, shops, concerts, theatre, sightseeing, random events
- Spend time on my hobbies - reading, baking, gaming, writing, etc
- Spend time on projects I want to do, e.g. DIY things and learning specific things
Also just resting, and like, housework

Go away, either broad or within the uk. I like to go to London and see a few shows or go on a walking/sightseeing trip with my dog.
If I have any left over I just use the time to unwind at home and catch on things.

Normally 2 weeks solo holiday, the rest I try to use to rest and recharge.

i have gone to london to stay with my sister for the last few weeks of leave, but i often get the train to other places like birmingham or bristol - i'm thinking of doing paris on my next week off - i can never understand people being 'bored' not being at work lol

What is this question?! You can do stuff alone - develop hobbies, solo day trips to other cities, museums, walks etc. If you're not able to enjoy your life alone then surely that means in a relationship you'd just be doing what they like?

Rest and recharge, find a spa? Maybe a dip in the sea?
BenjieAndLion69@reddit
I would make a promise to myself that everyday to go outside. Even if it’s for a bit of shopping or a walk. Interact with strangers. If the weathers good and you have places close, take your lunch with you and your ear pods/book and have a picnic. (Or a sarnie on a bench) Don’t just stew in bed or in front of a screen. It’s too easy to become idle when you have time off.. Enjoy 😊
Organic_Mechanic_702@reddit
Get a bike and a tent..
bellathebeaut@reddit
Mainly use it to go places, local days out, going to museums/galleries, finding somewhere nice to sit with a book or sketchpad.
I do a bit of solo travel further afield, just book a travelodge or similar in a different city and take the train to get a night away exploring somewhere new. If I've got a week off I'll go abroad, you can do it very cheaply depending on where you go.
Sibs_@reddit
Most of it goes on travelling abroad, the rest to my hobbies & interests or seeing friends/family.
Having flexibility with annual leave makes travelling abroad very affordable. Isn't for everyone but works perfectly for me.
WelshBen@reddit
I'm recently single, but also recently tee total. Previously i would sit in a pub or get on a mad session on my time off if i'm not going on holiday. Now i like to go hiking, or canoeing or something thats much more mindful and it turns out this stuff is so much more fun and better for the soul, not to mention the physical health benefits.
That said, some people just like to sit around and chill out with their leave and that might be what they need too.

When I lived in London, I would do city breaks. Find the cheapest flight and some inexpensive accommodation. Plan a couple of things, but part of the beauty for me was just wandering around looking at the architecture/shops/etc. Stop for a drink and food whenever you want. Read a bit. Went to Berlin, Prague (midweek) and Lyon to name three.
I loved it and still sometimes manage a few days away alone if my wife can’t make it.

I don't take much leave and end up getting moaned at by my boss. He can't force me to take it though.
The alternative is literally sitting at home waiting to go back to work
LegitimateDraw3902@reddit
What happens to your unused leave though? Generally in the UK it’s ’use it or lose it’ (can usually carry 5 days). People who don’t take leave are underpaid by their own choice.
Artistic_Bug_7223@reddit
I can carry some over but lose the remainder.
LegitimateDraw3902@reddit
Would you not rather take the leave? Genuinely curious as I don’t know anyone who forgoes what they’re owed by their employer.
Artistic_Bug_7223@reddit
I have ADHD so time without the structure that my working day brings is an empty and boring mess. i can take medical appointments in work time so don't need to use leave for it

Could you not take it as a bunch of long weekends, if a week long block doesn't suit you?

Wank
bowak@reddit
I often use a few days scattered around spring to take advantage of the Easter & May bank holidays to get 7ish weeks in a row as 3-4 day weeks.
I find it's quite refreshing to get a big run of shorter weeks just as the weather is typically nicer and it only uses up about one week of my leave allowance to fit it all in so I can still take some bigger gaps throughout the year. But for me at least it really focuses my mind on making the most of each day or two extra in each week.
Affectionate-Fix2797@reddit
Motorsport events and camp there.
Not a cheap option though in many cases.

Not single now, but I could say what I did before I met my wife.
Monday and Tuesday nights I played pool anyway, but then if I had annual leave to book, I would specifically book for a Tuesday and Wednesday off work knowing I would get hammered at pool, rather than just a couple of beers. Looking back, it was an absolute waste of life. Don’t do what I did

Whatever I want really. Abit of solo travelling, the odd day out here and there in the UK, lazy days, hobby days, DIY days, a nice long Christmas break. I think alot of people (not saying that's you) think they have to be doing some incredibly exciting thing on days off. If I don't have a particular holiday or thing to book annual leave for I like to book a load of Fridays off to give me some nice 3 day weekends.
Low-Understanding119@reddit
Have nice days out! Rollerskate in the park, go to a roller rink, watch a movie, paint in the park, go to a pottery class, go to a petting zoo, take a golf lesson, take a horse lesson, drive a super car… the list goes on. I love my solo dates!

Otherwise walking / hiking / cycling
Sea-Still5427@reddit
Starting with whatever forms of transport are available and affordable, stick a large map of the region on a wall and explore areas you haven't been to before - so it's not about the destination, more having curiosity and finding new things that appeal to you. Depending on your personality, that might be busy tourist attractions or, if you're like me, peaceful spots in different landscapes where you feel a connection with your surroundings - rivers and waterfalls for outdoor swimming, sunrise on empty beaches, hillwalking with a picnic, nature reserves, night safaris to find glow worms and nightjars. There's so much around us to enjoy.

I usually end up carrying 10 days over.
Trying to better at taking regular random days this year.
Its much easier to take myself off for a nice breakfast and a walk round a museum or something if its jist one day.
Taking a whole week off when all of my friends are busy just stresses me out because I get bored and lonely.
I considerd one of those single person holidays, but they seem so expensive.

I just spent a week in Malta alone on holiday! Was amazing, most of the time I lay by the hotel pool listening to the cricket or podcasts and swimming. Went to see the main fort which was empty, result, and then watched tv shows or movies in the evening or just sitting by the sea watching to world go by. Absolute bliss as didn’t have to do what someone else wanted to do, didn’t have to worry about if someone was bored, just chilled and relaxing holiday. Back to the real world tomorrow 😩

I know someone who does amazing hiking / wild camping trips for their holidays. The wild camping isn’t technically legal in most places, but if you’re smart you’re unlikely to get busted. They basically get a train or bus to the starting point, do the hike, then get a train or bus home. Think they’ve done the West Highland Way, the Coast-to-Coast and some other routes.
Inkblot7001@reddit

I usually use it to head back "home" and see my dad / sisters / friend who still live in that area. (Despite apparently being an adult and living in my current location for 20 plus years, I still think of where I grew up as "home).
Usually go back 3-4 times a year.
Jolly-Minimum-6641@reddit
That's fine if you want to do it, but feeling pressured and sarcastically told "well I know you've got places you'd rather be" (yes, actually, I do)? It sucks.
DrH1983@reddit
Nah I want to, nice to go back tbh. Still frequently consider moving back tbh, I have a few friends and job but beyond that don't really have a strong affinity with where I am.

When I was single I travelled alone, and when I had no money I travelled alone on the cheap. So Flix buses, cheap hostels, supermarket picnics/booze. Well, I would go on trips - mostly to hike or run, but that costs money. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of nowhere, so to go anywhere, you need to drive, which uses fuel, which costs money. But, on some off days, I'd just just drive close (30mins) to local parks or forests to run, take photos etc. just dander and explore.
cooky561@reddit
Honestly, if I'm not travelling....nothing. Time spent doing nothing is so rare if you are single since if you live alone, you also have to do the chores & cooking as well as working. It's nice to just spend a few days waking up when I want, and it not mattering if I relax for a bit.
I have a GF but we don't live together, and as such I am single for the purpose of this question.
Toxteth_OGradyy@reddit
Hiking. Sometimes just for the day, sometimes for a week or more with a tent etc on my back. When I started it was with cheap second hand gear. Once you have the gear it’s a cheap thing to do. Lots of solo hikers on the West Highland Way, Pennine Way etc. I’ve made some great friends doing it too.
thegreyman1986@reddit
Chill out, it’s that simple. When the weather is good I’ll sit in the garden enjoying the sun, AirPods in and some cold beers, I’ll catch up on things I’ve been meaning to - usually little odd jobs around the house, I’ll go to places I’ve not been to in a while like I live in the north so I might decide one day to have a drive over to Whitby, grab some fish and chips and have a walk around, or maybe I’ll drive down to somewhere just outside of London and book a hotel for a couple of nights and get the train into London, spend the day going around and catch the last train back and doing the same the next day and on a fee occasions I’ve had 2 weeks off, my friends haven’t been available to do anything so I’ve looked for a last minute holiday, sometimes I might only find a short 2-3 day city break for a reasonable price, one time I got mega lucky and got 10 days in Sharm El Sheikh for half the price, all inclusive so just sat by the pool getting sunburnt for 10 days
Travel-solo-@reddit

Go for walks, sometimes gardening, read a bit if I’m in the mood, put time into video games, don’t set an alarm is always a bonus as well.
jono12132@reddit
I don't take it. I take it for doctor's appointments etc. But I find I'm happier at work rather than being stuck bored at home. I try to keep myself busy on my days off, go to gym etc. But there's only so much of that you can do. My friends have all settled down and need a couple of months notice to do anything and even then some of them will drop out. I don't personally feel like I could enjoy traveling alone, at least not for more than two or there day, I should try it though I suppose. I know I shouldn't let the company take my holidays, but being off makes me feel unhappy.
mdzmdz@reddit
What will you do when you retire?
mdzmdz@reddit
At my place you can sell it, but unfortunately they split the payment over the year so instead of getting £500 (or whatever) for a week as a lump sum it's \~£50/month so you don't get the feeling of being able to treat yourself.
torihe@reddit
I’ve started a ‘tourist for a day’ list, of all the local things I’ve never been to or had time to see and am working through it. Varies for walks in national trust properties, going to the docks and canal path, or taking a sandwich and a book in the car and driving somewhere I can read and relax
thecuriousiguana@reddit
This exactly. I bet there are 50 towns and villages within an hour of you that you've just never been to. They don't have to be Big Days Out, just go and see what they'll like.
Also download something like Komoot and see what walks people have recorded around you. You don't have to be a "hiker" to go for a walk, and it'll get you out of the house for an hour or two.
Empty_Cherry6995@reddit

I've travelled to Europe twice on my own. Don't like flying especially and I'm quite shy. But it was fine. People really dont think anything of a person eating alone. The only person aware of it is you! I just read a book. When you're in museums etc, you're not rushed and can visit the bits you want to see. When I turned 40 last year, I went to Berlin. One evening I stayed out bit later, found a pub that had live music. Was really relaxed and I just sat enjoying the music and local beer! I just stick to myself, I'm aware that I'm a lone woman so I don't put myself out there too much in the evening, just have dinner and head back to the hotel. Don't miss out just because it's only you.

Every day of annual leave for me if I wasn't married, had no kids, and had little money would be wake up, eat, game pretty much all day, work out, go see friends. Rinse and repeat. Free time seems like a 'whatever' until you don't have it anymore. Enjoy it.
banedlol@reddit
I use it in the most efficient way possible to maximise time off. For example on my shift there's a time where if I book 3 off I get 6 in a row off.

I would love this problem but I never have enough annual leave. If you have lots of days but no plans, split your leave up more. Take a few long weekends where you can hang out a park, have a cinema day, go to a library/museum/hike/gym or something. You could also use it for more productive stuff, like housework or life admin. So many options.

All of my mates have wives, kids and more money than I do, so they are often otherwise engaged, doubly so during the summer holidays.
I inevitably use my annual leave in odd days spread out throughout the year.
I seldomly go anywhere. I spend most of my time reading books, watching films and sleeping.
I would like to see some more of the world, but I’m too poor and have a couple of medical conditions that lead me to feeling fatigued a lot of the time.

this year I’ve done a week at home with a friend.
A week in Scotland on my own.
Planning a week with my friend somewhere in England in Oct.
And there is a place in Wales I went a couple of years ago that I wanna go back to on my own.
That gives me a week at Christmas to chill at home (or carry the holiday to next year and use for Feb off again).

I'd use it for indulging my hobbies. Things like going away to folk festivals and the like. That, or volunteering.

I’ve been put on a 7 day week availability contract so I have to use my AL to take weekends off/. Yes I despise weekends that much. Only option left as my flexible work request was denied.
