What's your most recent little win?
Posted by RagingFuckNuggets@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 97 comments
I've had a really shit week, you know them weeks where you just keep getting dealt a shit hand.
Car broke down, husband's been off work ill which means his pay will be reduced, oldest kid is getting fed up of nursery, it's a massive fight every morning to get him to go - just so ready for school! And to top it off, my youngest is teething and with the heat, sleep and naps are non existent. Along with a load of other crap.
With the youngest teething, they haven't wanted their dummy, we were waiting until Christmas to get rid but since she's been refusing it we've managed to get her off it with minimal upset. This to me is my little win.
What's yours?
Imaginary_Desk_@reddit
This is awesome! Well done Mummy and little one!
My little win is that my year 9 daughter has achieved 91% attendance this year! She’s had a really shit few years since starting secondary school, police investigations etc so her attendance has been awful.
This year she has not only turned around her attendance but also her behaviour in school, too. First time her positive behaviour points have far exceeded her negatives. It’s usually the other way round.
I’m extremely proud of her!
CovidMakesMeSick@reddit
That's amazing! I'm not a parent but I was a rebellious teenager and cannot imagine getting better with school things rather than worse. Was there anything specific that brought the behaviour change on (other than your clearly fantastic parenting)?
Imaginary_Desk_@reddit
Consistency at home, private and free counselling, having her back and going to relevant authorities for things outside of school have definitely helped her. We have full transparency in our parent/child relationship.
Also two teachers being there for her IN school; supporting her, the police investigations etc… Those two people have really been key factors. We liaise frequently. If my daughter is having a bad day at home or in school we have all been in contact and have many times over the years, decided whether or not to allow my daughter a mental health day or to push my daughter into going and/or staying. When our decision has been wrong, I have been allowed to go and collect my daughter.
Those two teachers really have had my daughters back! The only people who realise that my daughter is more than just a name on the register; and that for my daughter’s future her mental health has to be paramount.
Not only have they supported my daughter but they have supported me, too.
CovidMakesMeSick@reddit
Those teachers sound amazing! I can imagine it definitely helps having people in school who care about her because they can see what's going on for all the times you're not there, and understand the nuances when other teachers might think she's just "playing up". I'm so happy to hear she has so many people looking out for her and that it has really helped, it's also awesome to have them to support you because they've probably seen similar situations and know what helps in them, so can help teach you that too. Also having full transparency is one of the most important things, because if you feel like you have to hide things from your parents then you're never going to fully get the help you need

im in year 10 and ive struggled with secondary, my attendance this year was 70% 😬😬😬 tell her im super proud of her too :)
Imaginary_Desk_@reddit
Aww you are a wonderful person, I will pass this on once the birthday girl wakes up.
70% is a good attendance in my opinion- especially as adapting to secondary can be difficult- well done to you. Are you enjoying your GCSEs when you do go in?
If it helps, my lowest attendance was 23%. I was not suited to the school environment! I got quite good grades, luckily. I love learning and always have. Just did not get on in the upper/secondary school environment.
I finally went to college at 31 and uni at 33.
The world is always changing, as are we. Never ever write yourself off 💖
AirlineBetter428@reddit
thank u so much!! happy birthday to her too
my gcses went okay, i just tried to get through thme to be honest but they're done now lol. yeah, i think im just not fit for a secondary school environment, but thank you anyway, your words mean a lot :))
aceyspaceyyy@reddit
that’s so real ! I just finished college n soon to be off to uni, but i HATED secondary with a passion. it’s much better (imo) in a college environment (if that’s your plan!). congrats on getting through your GCSE’s ! if it’s any consultation I had 60% attendance in y11, constant talks from teachers about how attendance = grades. it really doesn’t. if you need study materials, YouTube has great talk-throughs.
AirlineBetter428@reddit
thank you soso much, im planning on going to college instead of 6th form yeah. that gives me so much hope, thank you:)
aceyspaceyyy@reddit
I preferred college a lot esp because the course I did had no exams, it was assignment based which worked a lot better for me :) ofc! good luck with college !!
AirlineBetter428@reddit
yess I've heard, im actually looking towards college a lot more. what did u study?
aceyspaceyyy@reddit
I took engineering ! what are you planning on studying ?
AirlineBetter428@reddit
sorry i only just seen this, thats cool! i think im going to do health and social care and try get into the social work field
Imaginary_Desk_@reddit
Well done to you! Good luck for your future :)
RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)
Well done to you as well Mum! Hope she keeps it up, I'm proud of her too, and of you for keeping going. These kids are bloody gorgeous beings but god parenting isn't for the faint hearted.
Imaginary_Desk_@reddit
This has actually made me tear up. Thank you very much 💖

Phone broke so I was stressing out about having to replace it when it costs so much, Google hid this little info about the phone being up for a refund due to a manufacturing fault. Clicking randomly on the repair page and I saw a little thing that said [if you agree to these terms a refund of 450 will be paid to you] so I just immediately clicked YES I AGREE.
I got my refund eventually and bought a new phone, traded in my old phone and I'm up £50 buying a new phone. I was paid money to buy a phone.
At first I thought I was being scammed but like, no, apparently Google sometimes refunds phones that break? I had no idea until I checked Reddit lol. It'd be a bigger win if it didn't take 2 months to go through fully getting it all sorted out. Then my earrings broke so I've had to spend the £50 on new earrings. Now I am net 0.
SnooBunnies725@reddit
Which phone model was it?
RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)
Yes I had similar! They didn't refund me but I got a brand no phone and they hardly asked any questions. Was chuffed as I couldn't afford a new phone as it was December last year.

I found out that the husband of the woman who's been making my life hell for the past decade leaves her home alone all the time with their newborn baby to go out drinking with his friends. I know it's a petty win, but it's my only one, and a great one.

My daughter with ARFID tried a new food and liked it!
lightninseed@reddit
Congratulations! What was the food?
_mounta1nlov3r_@reddit
It was actually a meal at a Boston tea party - flatbread with hummus and spicy cauliflower. It was a massive win as she often really struggles with anything not cooked from scratch by me.
JaBe68@reddit
Such a win!!!! We have a little family dance when my daughter finds a new food. Her most recent discovery was silky tofu. Opens up so many new dinner options.
SmellMyMangoes@reddit
As someone with ARFID i can appreciate how amazing this is!! Congratulations to your daughter!
DameKumquat@reddit
Congratulations! My son with it is increasingly willing to try new foods, just eats three bites and then goes back to bread.
On the plus side, this makes him very cheap and easy to cater for!
Cheese_Dinosaur@reddit
That’s fantastic! My (now adult) son has this. It’s been a struggle.
RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)
Yay! Well done her, bet you're super proud.

I got rewarded pip and I'm able to get a mobility car after 3 years of not having a car due to income 😍😍
KelpFox05@reddit
FUCK YEAH!!! Fellow PIP receiver here, that's genuinely an incredible feat. They make it so hard. Congratulations on the car!! :D
Mama-Fish21@reddit
Thank you, not many people have been supportive at all, so your comment means a lot to me :) They do. I thought I would never get it but I scored 12 points for mobility due to epilepsy. Our life is so much better now. Congratulations on yours :D

I went to the dentist. The dentist I had as a child was a horrible person who should never have been around patients, and after every appointment I would also get shouted at by my parents for having bad teeth, so I haven't been for my entire adult life. The dentist was so kind and patient with me that it's made me realise just how badly I was treated as a child. I need a lot of work doing and it's going to use all my savings to pay for it, but at least I will be able to eat properly again.
springsomnia@reddit
I got a free National Trust membership. I love going to their country houses, so it’s a win for me!

Bought a Dr Pepper in a corner shop. 85p, only had 60p on me. Went to pay by card, the guy asked how much I’ve got. I said 60p, he said that’ll do.
I’ll still be thinking about that in 10 years.

I started going to a councillor.
Last week was only my second session but something inside me erupted and I shared things with them that I've never said out loud, never mind to anyone else.
It's a long road ahead but it feels good to have an environment where I feel safe enough to say those things.
lilbunnygal@reddit
Do you mean a counsellor? :)
A councillor is something different. :)
h00dman@reddit
🤣
Yes, I meant counsellor. My local councillors couldn't agree on the colour of air, nevermind help a troubled mind.
Bloody autocorrect.

RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)
Oooh this sounds interesting. What is a Freedom pass and how did you get one? If you don't mind sharing
lilbunnygal@reddit
Freedom pass is for those over 65 (or might be 60? I know they said they might lower the age bracket).
They also do them for disabled ppl too.

After four months of trying to get information from the DWP about voluntary National Insurance contributions, and a frustrating phone call during which they told me information I'd already accessed from the gov.uk website, I was finally directed to HMRC, who gave me all the information I needed in a very clear and professional way, even though I had to wait for nearly thirty minutes to speak to someone. At one point, I thought was never going to clear that item from my to-do list.

Yesterday I took two Strava KOMs which were 1/10000+. This improved my Veloviewer score by 0.0008 from 99.973 to 99.974. It is super hard to make progress on that.
Niche I know. Today I was 'sod it, it is too hot to ride.' which is a shame because it is a waste of a sunny day.

I'm a teacher, on Friday I did a "gig" in the hall, there were about 350+ students there to have a big old sing-along - I felt like I got stage fright, and I thought it went terribly. P6 rolls around and my y9 class (literally my last class in this school and probably my favourite and best) get in and complain we did no Arctic Monkeys, so I grabbed the guitar to do Mardy Bum, and we decided instead of playing pirates (a maths game) for the last lesson we would just have a big old sing-along. I am not joking when I say it was one of the best things I've done in my life. I think they enjoyed it!
didumakethetea@reddit
I had an awful day the other day, woke up late, got tailgated by a maniac, dude fell off my building, whole system at work changed meaning I have to re enter, honestly, thousands of lines of data. I bought a scratchcard knowing God has a sense of humour, won £20. It was enough to keep me going that day lol

My breakdown cover renewal came in and it’s £15 cheaper than last year. I was amazed.
sh4dfox@reddit
Love this for you
lilbunnygal@reddit
Shop around. You might find you can get it cheaper than £15.
Even if your current provider is on the list when you shop around (use a comparison site), if the quote is cheaper than the renewal you can call them up, quote the reference on the quote and they're obliged to renew you at that price.
peppermint_m@reddit
Breakdown cover is also notoriously easy to haggle with! I contacted AA earlier this year to see if I could remove one of the bits from my renewal quote to make it a bit cheaper. Ended up keeping the additional cover and they just ended up knocking £40 off the price for no reason.
RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)

Everything in life took a downturn — 3 medical issues hit a once, which took me out of work, no sick pay, burnt through my savings, put me into a mental health spiral (in NHS therapy for some of it), made me withdraw from seeing/meeting/speaking to people for nearly 6 months, gained 15% increase in weight within a week...
Small wins = lost 10% of that weight, started replying to friends, and a cousin who saved my life about 10 years ago sent me a random WhatsApp message the other night.
That message was the cherry of the small wins.
RagingFuckNuggets@reddit (OP)

Thanks. It’s been a roller coaster. I have the mortgage what feels like forever now. I’m in my 50s and downgraded considerably as I’m on my own and I needed something affordable. The mortgage valuations take place next week so will know more then.
