Matthew Sweet

Was he a big part of your music scene as a teen? I had his albums, went to his concerts. It’s well-known that he’s from lincoln, NE. We thought he was just peachy. But what about people from other areas? Was he played on the radio? Did you go to his concerts?

The drum solo in Girlfriend is probably my favorite from that era. It just pops without being obnoxious.
He played all the instruments and sang lead, harmony, and backup on that record.

Other than “girlfriend” I’d say no. But his catalog is very good. A very under the radar singer-songwriter. I’d definitely call him a song-writer’s song-writer.

I know the name but I’m not familiar with his music.

I didn’t really discover him until college. The local radio stations in my area did not play his music and that’s primarily how I discovered music then. Once I discovered Matthew Sweet, I really enjoyed his music.
I was more into the Canadian outfit, Matthew Good Band, which I discovered as a freshman in high school through my older sister. No one else in my high school had ever heard of them because local radio didn’t play them either and I was able to impress my friends by introducing them.

Only know Matthew Sweet for his appearance on The Craft soundtrack. One of many 90s alternative acts who simply didn't cross over to Britain.

Loved Matthew Sweet. Listened to him heavily when I was young and then forgot about him for a bit. Was watching Austin Powers years later and recognized him in Austin’s band Ming Tea. Forgot about him again until today, so much appreciated.

I wasn't aware of him until Guitar Hero

He was played on mainstream radio in Houston in the 90s! I loved “Girlfriend” and also had the “100% Fun” album on CD. Several of those songs were big parts of my early dating years.
My local station played “Girlfriend” last week, and they also shared that he had a significant stroke at the end of last year and is still recovering. Some googling turned up his GoFundMe page for those who can help: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-matthew-sweets-stroke-recovery

Not a big part, no. I bought Girlfriend on cassette ("I've Been Waiting" was a minor hit with a cool video) and 100% Fun on CD and listened to them quite a bit. Later in life I started listening to his other stuff, and became particularly enamored with his collaborations with Susanna Hoffs, doing covers (I discovered great songs like "Girls Talk" and "Care of Cell 44", among others. I talked to a friend of mine about going to see him live around 2016, but unfortunately it never happened. Now he will likely never tour again. :(

I only ever heard one song, Sick of Myself and I listened to it on repeat.

I just watched a thing on him recovering from a stroke last week. https://youtu.be/fYeWHDDrAoQ?si=ceyJO88-UtCakXPy

I first dug him because he used footage from an anime movie in his video for Girlfriend, then I realized his song writing was really good.

100% Fun is the CD that got me in hot water with the Columbia House collections department.

I had a friend that was REALLY big into Mathew Sweet. Wasn't my thing though. He was decent at what he did. Just not my thing.

Saw him in Austin in 1995 at Liberty Lunch. My best friend was a huge fan and managed to get us back to the tour bus after the show, so I got to meet him. Pretty chill dude.

Girlfriend was a great album but that was the only one I got into.

He was pretty big in the late 90 in New England
