90s Hip Hop Suggestions

I’m catching up on some music my mom never let me listen to as a kid. I found a 90s hip hop playlist that I’m currently enjoying. My favorites so far have been A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, and Eric B. And Rakim. Who else should I catch up on/what albums of these artists should I dive into?

2 Live Crew. Your mom definitely wouldn’t have let you listen to them.

Dogg Pound
Bone Thugs n Harmony
Scarface
Wu tang

90s east coast hip hop is my bread & butter! Some recommendations that I haven't seen above:
I'd definitely check out Jeru the Damaja's 1st 2 albums, The Sun Rises in the East and Wrath of the Math, as well as Group Home's Livin Proof (weak rapping and amazing production), all produced by DJ Premier.
Early Boot Camp Clik: Smif-N-Wessun's Dah Shinin', Black Moon' s Enta Da Stage, Heltah Skeltah's Nocturnal, and OGC's Da Storm are all favorites.
Redman's 1st 3 (maybe 4) albums are all classics.
All of Onyx's and MOPs 90s albums are good if you like that style.
O.C.'s Word...Life is another underrated gem.
Mic Geronimo's the Natural is great too.
Last, but far from least, I'd definitely recommend Pete Rock & CL Smooth if you like Tribe Called Quest.

Look up "Scottos Guide to 90s Hip Hop" on Spotify. It's one of my favorite playlist.

Most of the good ones are taken. I haven’t seen OutKast yet…. Damn I still love their music to this day.

And if bro ends up liking Dogg Pound, check out dudes like RBX, Celly Cell, King Tee, Allfrumthai, and even Paris. Dogg Food album is the epitome of 90s west coast gangsta funk imo. Westside Connection debut was also fire but later on. MC Ren the goat.
Stonk_Lord86@reddit
Celly Cell is a sleeper. It’s goinnnn down tonight….. tonight is the niiiiiiight.

I should add, I’ve been trying to fill some gaps in my old school hip-hop knowledge recently too. I love Mos Def/ Talib Kweli / Black Star.
Realized I’d been sleeping on Mobb Deep and need to listen to more Wu Tang, but what other east coast / NYC classics are a must?
NachoNachoDan@reddit
MFDOOM, Beastie Boys, Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith
JPMoney81@reddit
Cam'ron and the Diplomats are NY guys with some good stuff.
Of course the Godfathers of NYC/East Coast stuff would be Ladies Love Cool James aka LL Cool J
see_be_do@reddit
Gang Starr

Literally the only one I would add is Dead Prez. This is otherwise the best rec list fr

I cannot BELIEVE that nobody has mentioned Dr. Dre's The Chronic yet. This is by far the best hip hop album of the 90s, only best MAYBE by Eminem's The Slim Shady LP (produced by Dr. Dre)
intransit412@reddit
I don’t see Wu-Tang either. They both seem too obvious. :)
intransit412@reddit
There’s so much good stuff from the 90s. I didn’t see these mentioned in the responses I’ve read.
NAS: It was Written Black Sheep: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing EPMD Wu-Tang Clan: Enter the Wu-Tang
YoGrizzly@reddit
With what you mentioned you’d probably like Aesop Rock. He’s been going since 1999.
Check out Redman and Method Man “Blackout”
Das Efx
Jurassic 5 “Quality Control”
Visionaries “Sophomore Jinx”
Busta Rhymes

Big Pun since I don't see him mentioned yet.
I never listened to him back in the day so it's like discovering classics as new songs for me now.
Nas is an obvious one. Dude's illmatic mix tape stuff was groundbreaking.
Early Jay Z even though him and Nas officially were 'beefing' forever credits Nas's sound for a lot of hip hop in those days.
gooch_norris_@reddit
Based on the groups you mentioned you should eat De La Soul with a spoon. I’d start with 3 Feet High and Rising but they never made a bad album
Reasonable-Wave8093@reddit
Watch House Party, Who’s the man! Listen to Salt n Peppa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Souls of Mischief, digable planets, Black Sheep,Dj Kool ft Biz Markie, Mos Def

I came across this one a while ago. I never thought I’d ever hear Tom Sawyer by Rush sampled in a rap song, but there it is.
