If you decide to join the US military as a career path, what factors do you take into account in deciding which branch to join?

I know that some people join the military as a job, and not out of patriotism or a higher ideal. But the US military has many different branches, each offering something different. In your experience, how do people decide on which branch and what does each branch offer for a career that the others might not? And is applying for one of the service academies like West Point a popular option?
