If you decide to join the US military as a career path, what factors do you take into account in deciding which branch to join?

Applying to the academies is a popular enough option that each of the three DoD academies takes 1,000 new cadets per year, and for every one of those 3,000 people, they reject a lot of applicants. A lot of people join the military for a lot of different reasons. You may hear that the Air Force is more comfortable, but they still treat junior-enlisted airmen like they're junior-enlisted. Some people join because they don't know what they want to do with their lives. Some people join because the benefits are pretty good. Some people join to get out of a bad hometown. Some people join to be like a family member or other role model. Some people are looking for job training (although this doesn't always translate to state licensure for the equivalent civilian job). One of the big things that you can get out of being in the military is a security clearance. If you have one of those, you'll rarely have trouble finding a job offer that pays much better than a similar non-clearance job, even if the job that you get has nothing to do with what you did in the military. If you were a radar operator, but want to do typical office work as a civilian, your security clearance can get you a much higher paycheck with a defense or intelligence contractor than you could get doing the same job for a bank or insurance company, and it's usually more difficult to get a clearance outside the military. If you just want to be in the military, the Army is usually the best option. They're the biggest, so they have the most different things that you can do. They also allow you to be more specific about what job you're signing up for (because they're bigger and have more spots to fill in most jobs) than the other ones. You can join the Army and know that you'll be specifically a 35F Intelligence Analyst, 94S Patriot System Repairer, or 88M Motor Transport Operator. The Navy and Air Force both offer opportunities to do jobs that the Army doesn't have, but in both cases, you're going to spend a lot less time sleeping outside. The Navy lets you sign up for a specific job, but they're less specific about this than the Army. With the Air Force, instead of picking a specific job, they have a recruiter talk to you about what jobs you might want and put together a list. They probably will give you one of the jobs on your list, depending on what's available, but they're smaller than the Army or the Navy, so they're a lot more likely to be full and pick something else for you (generally, something where they have a lot of openings, which probably means Security Forces), especially if you're trying to get into some highly sought-after stuff like cyber and intelligence. Now that the Space Force is its own separate thing, they still do things mostly similar to the Air Force, but if you join the Space Force, you go in knowing a much narrower list of jobs that they might give you, much narrower list of bases that they might send you to, and every job that they have in the Space Force requires a Top Secret clearance. With the Marine Corps, almost every job has an equivalent job in the Army, with more opportunities to do different things. It's just that the Marine Corps is Marine-ier, and everyone who has interacted with them knows exactly what I mean. The jobs that don't have an equivalent in the Army are mostly their fixed-wing aviation stuff, which has close equivalents in the Navy and Air Force. The reason to join the Marine Corps rather than the Army, Navy, or Air Force is because you want to be in the Marine Corps, more than any particular job in the military. The same applies to the Coast Guard: most jobs in the Coast Guard are available in the Navy, and the Navy is bigger, gives you more opportunities to do different things in different places, but if you're interested in the Coast Guard's mission and you want to do maritime search and rescue or something, you should join the Coast Guard instead of the Navy.
