My wife keeps trying to get me to watch this. I understand this is the "Requiem for a Dream" of anime, is that correct? She hasn't seen it so I'm thinking of making it a back to back night.
The first time I saw this movie I was skeptical that it could be as sad as I heard it was. I was sobbing before the movie title even came up on the screen
I don’t usually give movies this kind of power, but Grave of the Fireflies changed me. Totally not trying to start some kind of political debate or anything, but it definitely crystallized a few things for me and changed how I see the world.
I’m going to watch it exactly one more time when my son is old enough to watch it. Thankfully I’ve still got like 10 years so I’ve got time to mentally prepare.
I just bought this because I love Studio Ghibli and haven’t seen this one yet. I’m glad I read these comments so I know to watch it on a day I am prepared.
I saw this movie fairly recently because of what I read across this site. I don’t get it man. It just didn’t have much of an effect on me.
It’s a sad story, sure, but it’s a cartoon. And not only is it a cartoon, but it’s in a style of animation that isn’t very detailed or expressive, and doesn’t do an incredibly good job of conveying emotion. Just my take seeing it for the first time as a guy in his 40s.
I still haven’t seen it, reading the synopsis was enough to deter me for many years.
When I first dabbled in anime, I figured if Night on the Galactic Railroad - a movie about anthropomorphic cats, who speak in Esperanto, on a journey into the nature of death, faith and the universe itself - was enough to bring me down and ponder some heavy stuff, this one would be too much.

It's the greatest movie you'll only watch once. Though I do recommend people to revisit it a second time if it's been more than 10 years.
Just make it a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro afterwards for a cleanser.
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
Just mentioning the name of this movie will make my wife sob and we haven't seen it in about 15 years so be forewarned.

I’m misty eyed just commenting on this post.
AdjectiveNoun111@reddit
You should watch it, it's a good film
madsci@reddit
I always say that the movie should be required viewing any time anyone's talking about going to war.
neo_neanderthal@reddit
It's a wonderful movie, and worth watching once. With a box of tissues to hand.
I'd never watch it again, but I'm glad I did once.

I think Requiem is more intense and traumatic, but this is certainly sad.
flexdogwalk3@reddit
It is a terrifyingly sad anime. Just be prepared.

Have her read the wiki. PLEASE.

Was... was it in the kids section? Because some poor kid is going to have a horrible day.

I haven’t watched this one yet. I feel like I need a quiet night home alone so I can experience it properly.

I would not recommend watching this alone. Watch with a friend or family member.

I think I need to get past my own deployment PTSD before I can attempt a watch.
Its going to be a bit.

If you need to cry but can’t this is not the worst way to do it.
ionlycome4thecomment@reddit
I kind of feel bad, though, for people who suffer from dry eyes & want to cry but can't.

The experience of watching this movie is like watching puppies drown for an hour and a half.

An amazing movie that I have not watched since the first time.

The take away is that there are no winners in war and it should always be avoided if possible.

Yep, once was enough lol

I love that movie. I also cannot bring myself to watch it again despite being in my library of films.

I don't know how many times I saw that cover before I realized there's a silhouette of a B-29 at the top.

Yeah they did. They want you to have trauma today.

That movie really showed the dark side of war.

Wow... You might want to ask your psychiatrist/psychologist/therapist to evaluate you against the Hare Checklist.
Leather_Addition2605@reddit
I’ve seen a lot of trauma, death, gore, and fucked up shit in real life, so it’s kind of hard to get emotional about a very flatly drawn cartoon.
Looney Tunes has more expressive animation. If it were a movie or even a more realistic type cartoon I think it would be more impactful.
RedditsCoxswain@reddit
What format is this in?
der_innkeeper@reddit (OP)
Blue Ray, I think.
mindsunwound@reddit
I was hoping it was going to be LaserDisc

For lifelong depression and a cinematically revered master class of sadness, that's a great price.
Ghibli films are a staple of movies that my daughters and I share.

I couldn’t even finish it, I think I stopped just short though it didn’t matter. I was crying so much I could hardly see.
Once was indeed enough, but that’s not to say it was bad. In fact a fabulous movie that’s tragic.
