I remember a compact disc that didn't go quietly at work. There was this loud whirring from the PC that was being rebuilt on the desk next to me and then BANG! the thing exploded in the drive, shards of plastic were sticking out of the case!
I once had a DVD with scratches on it and I read about a technique for smoothing them out (enough for the laser to be able to read it) that involved using Vasaline. I did this, I put the disc into the player, it spun up, there was a loud pop and a bunch of rapid crunching sounds, and I pretty well knew what had gone down. That was the end of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
I had gotten into SACDs (super audio CDs) and DVD audio for a bit, but there wasn't much of a selection and it's harder to find something that plays that. They can either aim for higher audio quality or surround sound. And probably both at the same time.
Same here. I have probably about 30 SACDs and a few DVD-Audio and a few more Blu-ray Audio discs. Amazing to listen to on a proper 5.1 home theatre.
Now a lot of those mixes are available on Apple Music, and a ton more on the albums that have Dolby Atmos mixes. Some newly released mixes sound like absolute garbage (Weezer, Oasis) but quite a few are amazing (Automatic for the People, The Beatles, Pink Floyd).
It's been so long since I've looked into it I never thought about streaming. I'll have to look into that. I had picked up an sacd player from a pawn shop and it worked a little bit but then stopped reading discs after a very short while. So I can't really speak to how good the Fleetwood Mac Rumors mix was. I had Dark Side of the Moon and I remember talk of Animals getting mixed, but I never kept tabs on that. If that ever materialized I'd like to grab that.
Yeah all of those are available in Atmos now on Apple Music and hundreds more. You just need an Apple TV box hooked up to an Atmos compatible surround receiver and you’re good to go.
Look into DSD audio, it's the format SACD used. You'll need a DAC or music player that can decode it and then google "buy dsd online" to find music and download it. Selection still sucks though and you'll need a good audio setup and a critical listening ear to fully appreciate it.
I still buy them because I'm sick of not owning the media I purchase. I enjoy streaming for the convenience but am not enjoying paying for things that I will never own. At least with CDs, for a time until they wear out, I can own something.
And unlike vinyl these days, the cd rack hasn’t been completely picked through by decades of collectors, so you might find something on the thrift shelf that isn’t “Louie McDuffy’s Magical Yodeling”
I have a 20 speaker system in my car too, including with speakers in the headrest. Imagine how good a well produced CD would sound. But I am stuck with streaming.
It's been fun watching the MD community rebuild during the pandemic when us bored millennials - what few of us had MD in the first place - dragged them out of the closets and started tinkering again. The new transfer tools made the medium functional again, and I now use mine as a poolside, no interruptions playlist machine. It can't compete against SD storage in the modern age, but it still looks and feels like the future.
I had about 300+ CD's at one point. But when I moved in with my wife and her kids in 2014, there simply wasn't room for them all. I kept favourites and the rest got ripped to an external hard drive, before I traded them to friends for other things or simply donated them. I play CD's in my truck now, as its not cell phone friendly, and I just love it better anyway. I still pickup the odd album from thrift stores and such.
Yeah I had hundreds. Took up so much room. I ripped them all and then sold them bit by bit to a local music store. Saved a couple for nostalgia. Only bought a couple since then, like rare stuff, singles that for some reason only came in that format.
All of mine (1000+) went cheaply to the used bin over the course of one summer years ago after ripping. Probably sold at the bottom of the market, other than that I don't miss em, don't miss physical media at all although I kept some vinyl.
Yeah I just don't get it, I did my time with tapes and cds just not looking to accumulate stuff anymore. Between my hard drive, digital buys from bandcamp, internet radio, youtube etc. I can't see running out of music in my lifetime and it follows me everywhere and weighs nothing ¯\(ツ)/¯

That's going to be a no from me dawg.

Ok but they’re legit the best smart tv interface out there, the Atmos music is just the icing on the cake.

AFAIK those only play stereo mixes. The most interesting thing about SACD were the 5.1 mixes.
whyneedaname77@reddit
I thought that was going to be the next move for music. Some of those were so good.

For me it’s also a hedge against cloud based music being cut off by whatever faceless megacorp controls it.

CDs are the new Records. Young people are enjoying buying music again.

I have about 550 at home. I still buy them.

I have not had a car with a CD player in 5 years, and that is where I listened to CD's the most.
don51181@reddit
That’s the toughest loss for CD’s. To listen to them in cars now would be such ha hassle.
hamburgler26@reddit
I found a bunch of what appear to be dicman knockoffs with bluetooth so you can pair it to your car.
I imagine the actual cd-player would be dead in a month though lol.

Yes and music makes driving go so much better. Especially road trips.

I'm nit sad at all about thr near-disappearance of CDs ir cassettes. Vinyl or digital; anything in between is pointless.
(Just going to head off thr pedants by saying yes I know CDs are digital, but you know what I mean!)

What next? MINI Discs gonna make a come back in a few years

Nope. Laser discs and Zip drives are the real future!

I don't see a problem.

Rare, local bands, and soundtracks, because they were some great mix tapes back in the day.

I wonder what god awful format we'll have in 20 years that will force a resurgence in low bitrate streaming.

Still have all my old CD’s and racking up a nice vinyl collection. Usually the $2 used records at my local store.
bronzemat@reddit
Maybe Laser Disks will finally have their time to shine. With LP records being popular and put up as art on walls, Laser Disks could be next!
reviewbarn@reddit
If streaming services keep trying to add AI music to playlists to save on playing royalties I forsee physical music having a minor resurgence.
Vinyl already has, but I could see CDs popping back up too.

I still buy a couple a year. Mostly to rip and play on media devices. But still it's not streaming. And supports the band i like directly.

Weak_Radish966@reddit
I buy probably 2 or 3 CDs a year, whereas 20 years ago I bought 2 or 3 a week. So yeah, there is still a place for them, IMO.
