Surely this is exactly the answer. For a BBQ or something, with a 4 pack you risk running out and as OP says, a 10 pack is going to leave you twatted or you end up leaving half of them. I usually end up buying a four pack and then spaffing a few quid on a fancy can of craft beer, which is usually somewhere near 6% so acts as a perfect can to kick off with. Turns out the supermarkets know exactly what you want and will twist that in the most unnoticable ways possible to make you spend more money.

I mean once in a while sure, but the idea that a 4 pack of beer is somehow 'not enough' is demonstrably problematic. 6 beers exceeds a week's recommended allowance of alcohol (which is a limit, not a target). If you're regularly drinking 6 cans of beer in one go then yes, you probably have an issue. Being an alcoholic simply means you have a dependence on alcohol - that doesn't mean you need to be necking 3 bottles of whiskey a day; it can also include being flummoxed that beers come in any fewer quantities than 6...

It's both. I've got an alcholic in the family so I'm firmly in the camp of "If you need to ask others about your alcoholic intake, you're probably drinking too much". But Reddit's very polarised between "A six pack a day never hurt anyone" and "If you don't use non-alcholic mouthwash you're probably a week from liver failure". Cause I was once a week binge on a Friday night guy. Then I was a twice a week guy. Then a couple after work in the pub guy. Then the well I might as well buy 4 cans cause there isn’t anything better to do on a Tuesday guy, to a drinking 4 cans a night and binge on a weekend guy, to a 3 bottles of wine a night guy. Nothing traumatic happened to me, I hold down an above average job, but over the years alcohol creeped up on me and is the cause of most of my problems. Drinking is all fun and games until it isn’t. I wish I could tell my 20 year old self what would happen if I continue to drink for the next 20 years. The warning signs were there for me in my early 20’s. Just wish I knew then what I know now. So I apologise for “spoiling the fun”.

Literally how I realised I have a problem with alcohol despite the fact that I don’t drink ‘often’ - every time I go past 2 ciders (yes I’m a female lightweight), I want more and can’t stop. I know my limits well enough not to be falling over nothing or throwing up, but I recognise my brain is craving more until I reach my limit. It was literally a joke amongst all my friends that ‘1 drink’ was always 4 or more for me. And rather worryingly at the back end of 2024 it got to the point where I was using coke sometimes to be able to drink more. I’ve only drank around once a month since January 💗 and usually stop at 2, occasionally 3. I’m proud of myself and only intend to cut that down even further

Alcohol is medically known to be very addictive in the very short term. How many people have gone to the pub for 1 and end up having 5? You obviously have more first hand experience - and congratulations on your recovery. My - less educated - opinion based on a few decades of drinking is having 4 beers and wanting 5 won't be a sign of problems for most people. (Drinking 4+ beers daily, drinking in the morning, all that I'd worry about).

Or why in Australia (and sometimes the US) they all use "stubby coolers" or "coozies", which are basically insulated foamy things you slip your tinny or bottle into to keep cool. And they come in loads of different designs so breweries etc can sell them as merch. And many pubs and bars in Aus just serve them directly with a beer if you're sitting outside and it's hot!

I used to work with a guy who was really tight. So how he bought beer was really surprising. He would buy a 4 pack from a corner shop whenever he wanted a beer. One day I asked him why he didn’t buy a proper crate from a supermarket to save money, like he did to the extreme with everything else in his life? Lots of people have a perfectly healthy relationship with gambling, that doesn't mean the marketing plan isn't to target gambling addicts. Though, I'd say if anything the 4 packs are more likely to be aimed at the 'addicts' - they're often a lot more expensive per can than the 10 packs and sold in cornershops etc. I'll buy a crate and not go through it in a month, or sometimes a year - I don't think the marketing is aimed at me!

Lad, do you go outside? If you want to drink for effect, drinking 6-8 cans (or 4-6 pints) is average, and a big night for most people is 10 cans+. Most people drink a lot, I’d guess most casual drinkers (young people especially) have around 8 cans once a week and 2 or 3 once a week.

As a murikan my initial thought was because the beers are bigger by default. I think the standard can size in the US is around 350ml, but here they are 440. You can find the 350s here too but they're not as common except in those "fridge" packs where you get 10 but they are smaller. But I realised now that holds no weight because in Japan they do 6 packs of 350s or 500s, so it's really just up to what the companies want to sell according to the country's vibe. As others mentioned it's probably just a marketing thing. 4 is too little for me to have in the house so I'd go bigger which means spending more.

It’s a marketing technique we use all the time in the industry, if you could buy in “complete blocks” of 6 you lose some incentive to purchase more. It’s like when games make you buy coins instead of just using cash, the skin you want is 1700 coins and you can buy in bundles of 1000/1500/3000, where is the 1700 option you may ask? Well you have to make a purchase large than the cost regardless, 1000+1500 or 3000. The 1300 left over is also too small (similar to how 4 beers is too small) therefore you then again STILL need to make another purchase in order to buy again. Cycle continues.

This reminds me of a post I saw a while ago — a woman working in a shop got shouted at by a customer because he only wanted 4 eggs, not the 6-pack they were selling. Beers (in cans) are 500ml and so with 4 you get 2l beer. 6 packs are typically 330ml so you get less than 2l. Heineken sell 6 packs if you really need. You also tend to find bottles in 6 packs with cardboard holders.

There's no perfect size tbh. If you keep drinking six, soon eight will be the perfect amount. The correct amount is always n-1, where n=the amount of beers required to ruin your night/the following day/your health/finances/marriage/whatever. As an ex-drinker, fuck what the temperance society on here say. Once you work out your "n", you do you. For me, that equates to fuck all now, but I wouldn't dream of determining where anyone else's threshold lies

Used to see six packs of 330ml cans. I don't think they hold together well with the larger cans. Now the price would be too high as it is things like Brewdog that tend to come in smaller cans, so 4 packs make sense.

Completely agree on this. I have found that in Sainsbury’s you can get a 6 ‘crate’ of Brewdog Punk IPA 440ml or Hazy Jane 440ml, but that’s it.
