Water storage

I recently bought a five gallon water container but I don’t know what to do to store it safely. I have heard I should use bleach but I’ve also heard that bleach is a bad idea. I also don’t know if tap water is fine or if I should use purified. I’ve heard conflicting results so I would like some help in learning how to store it properly and avoid poisoning myself.
