Awesome resourcefulness. Thanks for passing on your experience

Glad it worked out, I’ll definitely be investing in some fire blankets now.
Just putting this out there just in case someone needs it, modern fire extinguishers are filled with a powder nowadays and that powder can settle over time, causing it to not expel anything when needed. You’re supposed to shake them once a month to keep the powder from settling and solidifying into a brick. If you’re ever unsure if yours is in good condition, small precharged ones are cheap so you might as well replace it, or at the very least get it refilled so you can start fresh.

Yours and another comment touched on that. I've never heard of that before. I just texted my brother (firefighter) to get his fee dback on that. I finally got a FE for my apartment. Shameful how long it took me, especially considering.

You should look into getting a pressurized water (PW) can. It holds a couple gallons of water, and you use a tire pump to pressurize it to the correct psi. You can put out a lot of fire with one of those. You cannot use it for kitchen or grease fires, you would need your blanket and abc extinguisher. But for putting out burning wood, or hay, you need water. It sounds like you are very remote and don’t always have a water source nearby, so a PW can could be very useful for you. We use them for class a fires, like trash, debris, or even hard to reach areas like an incipient fire in an attic. Also a little dawn dish soap mixed inside the water will help coat things by reducing the surface tension of the water.

Don’t confuse being lucky with being prepared. You were ready enough to handle it. Also points out what a lot of people here say about community helping out one another. Well done.

I am at the age the kids and their friends are all beginning to move into theor own homes. I started giving extinguisher spray cans and a fire blanket to each as a house warming party.
Remarkably, at least 2 of those young 20 something kids have needed those fire blankets and extinguisher spray cans to save their homes. They all looked at me funny and said thanks when I hand them the stuff, until buddies needed it. Now, all those kids have purchased extinguisher spray cans for every room. They work, and if you watch sale prices you can get 4 cans for $20ish bucks. Same with the fire blankets.

Awesome report!
In a recent fire prevention training I attended the fire chief had discharged household Kiddie brand fire extinguishers cut in half from top to bottom to show how the powder in them will cake and solidify if they are not rotated and shaken once a month.
He also stated that household FEs have a best use by date.
What is the coverage area of a fire extinguisher?
The fire rating is found by multiplying the floor area in metres squared (m²) by 0.065. Therefore for a floor area of 200m² the fire rating is 200 x 0.065 = 13A. A 9 litre water extinguisher has a fire rating of 13A, therefore one 9 litre water extinguisher will be required for every 200m² of floor area.

I have a fire extinguisher and blanket in the house, workshop, van, and camper.

Good going.
The last place that burned, she used her fire extinguisher but the hot metal sparked up again and she only had an empty extinguisher. The fire department took 30 minutes and by then, it was just keeping the countryside from catching fire.
