ULPT - How to anonymously « leak » a private Teams conversation to my boss
Posted by RabidWarHamster@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 34 comments
I have gained access to a conversation between two colleagues on Microsoft Teams. These two people had a number of very cruel things and gifs sent to each other about another friend/colleague. And this on a work platform and during work hours. I’d like to know if there is any reasonable way to leak this convo to our boss, I have access to one of the colleague’s accounts if that helps.

Print it out and leave it on the copier or on the bosses desk or in his/her mailbox.
WillyWanka-69@reddit
And what about printer or print server logs?
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
Sending screenshots? Or rather photos of the screen and sending them off site to print?
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
yes, photos would be smart! I was not too worried about logs until someone mentioned it because I can delete them (I think) at work, but this would solve that for sure!
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
I was thinking maybe take a picture with OP’s phone and then print at home. Leave in bosses mail or on the copier? Heck OP can mail via USPS.
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
Ooh didn’t think of that. As someone said earlier, they probably still suspect me but if there is no proof… 😶
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
I mean they can suspect but play dumb. Maybe send it by mail? So many ways to do it.

I work in IT and can tell who printed any document , what time, the machine it came from and who was logged in. This is terrible advice.
White_Sugga@reddit
This
Hard copy is the way to go
Don't print it out at work!

Log into your co workers account and add your boss to the chat and act like you have no idea what happened
SgtMac02@reddit
Uh...how TF did you gain access to their private conversations?? If I'm the boss, I'm probably firing your ass for the security violations before I get to addressing the inappropriate conversation between your coworkers.

I’m mean the whole point of the sub is to go into unethical territory - I’d say I voluntarily stumbled across the info if you will. If there’s no way to do it so be it. But these people only barely make it above the « dead weight » category and to know they spend their time bitching on work channels makes it worse. If you wanna bitch and vent, do it on your personal platform 😉
SgtMac02@reddit
Yeah... I get why you're pissed. And yes, I know what sub we're in. But your behaviors are far more troubling than theirs, from the boss' perspective. I'd tread VERY carefully if I were you.

Screenshots, print at home, and then just leave it on the printer in the office.
Really fuck with IT that there’s no print records for it 🤣
muntaxitome@reddit
It's their system, god knows what they will be able to trace about who accessed that convo. Potentially you are committing a crime doing this and they may very well trace it to you no matter how you do it. I don't think you are in 'reasonable' territory here. As for how to bring it to your boss, mail it physically, use black and white printer (not at your job lol) because color printers contain tracking code. Mail it somewhere far from your home.
Sealowe@reddit
It’s a private conversation so maybe mind your own fucking business?
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
I understand the sentiment, don’t get me wrong. But this type of bitching belongs off company platforms. And, subjectively speaking of course, they’re not very nice people and we have to pick up a lot of their slack/they take credit for our work to remain vague about it.
NullGWard@reddit
Don’t be surprised if your bosses (or even an objective third party) don’t think the conversation is as bad as you think it is. You could then become the target, especially if your accessing the data has potentially violated a state or federal anti-computer hacking law.
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
This is why I’d have like to do this on the sly. The boss has my friends back more than the other two if that helps (she actually generates revenue, the others are middle management that are in our hierarchy)
n-d-a@reddit
That guy above you is a jerk. But he don’t mind us talking about it as it’s none of his business.
JayMoots@reddit
My sentiment exactly. People should be allowed to vent about their coworkers in private. OP's stuff about it being on a work platform during work hours is just whiny justification.
AverageLiberalJoe@reddit
Dont anon leak to your boss. Anon leak to the office gossip. They will tell everyone for you and your boss will find out eventually.
GameMaster366@reddit
If you have access to the account, what proof is to there that you yourself didn't send the messages and this is setting up blackmail? You're on a real slippery slope.
adventurous-yorkie@reddit
Mind you own business.
Cuneus-Maximus@reddit
Take screenshots of the whole thing, then just add your boss to the conversation, allowing them to see the history. The whole thing will be in front of them.
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
That’s their first thing that came to mind, but they likely trace that back to me or my friend as it’s a small company and there aren’t many people they’d suspect of outing them.
Cuneus-Maximus@reddit
What is the downside? You shouldn't be punished for bringing inappropriate behavior / misuse of company resources to light.
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
Because they way that I gained access would be deemed « unethical »
Cuneus-Maximus@reddit
Take pictures of the messages up on screen with your phone. Say it was left up and you just noticed it? Use the colleague's account to add the boss on Teams...
ElCamo267@reddit
Sounds like a risk you have to take to do this... If they'd suspect you as the leaker doing it that way, they would suspect you as the leaker doing it any way.
SeeYouOn16@reddit
Could you create a random gmail account and send the screen shots to your boss anonymously from that?
RabidWarHamster@reddit (OP)
Not a bad idea, I was trying to go more the « oops the conversation is now publicly accessible »
LiliPompon@reddit
How can it be private using work tools ?
