I must've watched this scene a 100 times on VHS as a kid. (Bloodsport, 1988)

Now I show you some trick or two
dunnkw@reddit
Dude I went to the library and got books on Dim Mak and karate and set up my own station to make my hands tough by punching into a bucket full of sand and all o ever did was get bloody fists. 13 was an amusing year for me. Loved Bloodsport.
jbp84@reddit
SAME. Goddamn the public library was amazing, especially for a nerdy lonely kid in pre-internet days (or at least when it wasn’t as accessible as it would eventually become)
But yeah…my pudgy self was convinced I was going to become some kickboxing ninja badass. I even ordered grappling hooks and throwing knives and other “mall ninja” shit from US Cavalry catalogs lol
dunnkw@reddit
100%. Ordered Tabis and throwing stars and I was just going to be hiding in trees waiting for the forces of evil.
jbp84@reddit
Oh man then you might appreciate this story…me and some friends were sledding on a big hill that probably had too many trees to be safe to sled on. But…ya know…dumb thrill seeking teenage boys without full formed prefrontal cortexes…
My genius self had the idea to use my grappling hook as a “safety”…yes. I thought I would be able to toss my grappling hook to bail off the sled and avoid hitting a tree. Again…wannabe ninja, right?
I’ll let you guess how it turned out, but I still have a giant indentation in my left thigh from where I hit a tree cross-ways. I don’t know how my femur didn’t snap.
Dark_Shroud@reddit
I remember all the kids who had ninja shit that was made just well enough to injure ourselves.
I hit myself in the eye with one end of a set of bolas.
My parents didn't trust me with rope let alone a grappling hook. Someone would have gotten killed with a grappling hook. Either falling while trying to climb on the house or climbing in trees.
DinosaurForTheWin@reddit
That's the most ninja thing I've ever read.
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
Plot twist: He's the best ninja who ever lived and he doesn't know it
jbp84@reddit
So…like Mr. Bean or Insoector Gadget…but a ninja version?
Outrageously inept but always comes out ahead from sheer dumb luck or other people’s unrecognized help
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
The nunchuk scene would be amazing
jbp84@reddit
Hahaha dude it would be.
And I’m sitting here stoned out of my gourd trying to noodle out some Hendrix solos on my Telecaster and old school tube amp. Based on your user name we could definitely be homies lol
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
Um, yeah you just nailed the perfect sentence to make me agree with you lol. Got a Tele, Love Hendrix, Love soloing, Got a tube amp
jbp84@reddit
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
jbp84@reddit
Dude…do you live remotely close to the St. Louis or Southern/Central Illinois areas…?
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
Sadly, no. Otherwise we'd be exchangin' solos and enjoyin' some bud
jbp84@reddit
Ah man. . Well if ever do get out this way give me a shout! Even if you’re just passing through.
HendrixHazeWays@reddit
I will 100% shirt brother!
jbp84@reddit
Thank you for the validation. Even all these years later…it’s soothing to my current midlife crisis lol
dunnkw@reddit
The theory was sound though. Give how it works in the movies.
jbp84@reddit
I need you to tell my mother and our traumatized babysitter that…wherever either of them are now.
dunnkw@reddit
Nah you give them my number man, I’ll put em on ice.
excreto2000@reddit
I envisioned you as Chris Farley in Beverly Hills Ninja
jbp84@reddit
I mean…I was a chubby funny kid who used humor to deflect depression and anxiety from childhood trauma so this is more accurate than you realize lol. Farley is still one of my heroes
eggs_erroneous@reddit
Oh my god I always wanted a grappling hook. I don't know what I would have done with one since there's zero chance I'd be able to climb a rope.
Key_Surprise2818@reddit
Seriously, these mfers had grappling hooks!?!?! I had a bola made out of tennis balls and a sweatshirt string. I'd kill for a grappling hook.
Dark_Shroud@reddit
My friend some how had bolas that were made with stiff rubber balls on the ends. The first time I used one it slipped in my hand and I hit myself in eye.
When we were finally allowed to play with them again a pair got tangled on the power line leading to the house and another pair disappeared into the neighbor's tree.
A grappling hook would have gotten one of us killed.
Fockewulf8@reddit
US Calvary....man this took me back. Loved that catalog when I was young!
jbp84@reddit
My mom wouldn’t let us get the internet for our home PC because of how dangerous she thought it would be…perverts on-line or whatever moral panic she watched Dateline stories about.
But letting me use her credit card numbers to order knives, swords, and all the other goofy shit teenage boys loved? Not a problem. Boys being boys and whatnot
mcjon77@reddit
I remember when I got my ninja uniform for Christmas in the mid-80s it came with a free grappling hook.
TheLostWoodsman@reddit
When I was 13 or 14 (30+ years ago) I invented my own martial arts system “Tactical Fighting Defense System “ aka TFDS. I created my logo and typed everything up in a document.
All my techniques were basically just stolen from various martial arts books that I had. I organized the techniques alphabetically and numerically from the books. A few years ago, I was downsizing my book collection and saw my 30 year old notes in some books. It was great going down memory lane.
eggs_erroneous@reddit
I truly think that every 13-year-old boy believes in his heart that he could be a ninja if he were just noticed by an old, wise master. I know I did.
EffectiveProgram4157@reddit
Yup, we all believe we'd give everything up and suffer whatever torture we must to become a ninja master. The great mind of a kid.
SlackerDS5@reddit
All we had was cinder blocks for shelving. One swing was enough for me to learn I wasn’t gonna learn that technique.
dunnkw@reddit
Nothing like a cinder block to remind you of your place in the world.
ForGrateJustice@reddit
I roughed up my palms by slapping a smooth, large river stone for years. It sorta worked.
fistedwithlove@reddit
did almost the exact same thing expect with a bag of black beans hahahaha
lemonylol@reddit
This actually is a legitimate practice though. What you're doing is basically deteriorating your bones so that they heal with a higher density. It's the same thing the Bride was doing for Pai Mei in Kill Bill 2. Afaik it happens naturally by just practicing impact martial arts, but hardcore like monks and stuff will hit wood, metal, or rocks to do this.
dunnkw@reddit
Yeah I knew I was doing it right because the Dim Mak book laid it out matter of factly. But I was just fooling around in my back yard, I never actually learned how to break anything or blow out the bottom brick and do some Van Damage.
Big_Slope@reddit
Van Damme made me think I had to be able to do splits before I could sign up for karate classes.
Covid_ice_cream@reddit
Ogre you asshole!
sowokeIdontblink@reddit
I always loved that everyone in the movie immediately calls JCVD American after hearing his thick Belgian accent.
buddachickentml@reddit
Well. Now I'm watching Bloodsport. Again.
Fortestingporpoises@reddit
Him and Arnold. "Hi I am an American man from America" with their very specific accents. "Hi American man."-Everyone in the movie.
tip0thehat@reddit
I love Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery both giving zero shits about their accents in The Highlander.
Also, I never understood wtf was going on with Peter Stormare’s character in Windtalkers.
Fortestingporpoises@reddit
Let’s be real, that’s batshit. Lambert, a Frenchman playing a Scott with a French accent and Connery, a Scot playing a Spaniard with a Scottish accent.
ThunderDungeon02@reddit
Nothing will ever top this. His character's name was Juan Sanchez-Villalobos Ramirez for fucks sake. But it doesn't stop there, because he didn't play a Spaniard but rather an Egyptian.
My second bit of trivia is that he turned down Gandalf because he didn't understand it. Let that sink in. Highlander...yep perfect sense. LoTR..."thish sheems weird"

The most fascinating thing about this movie is the "true story" it was based on. Frank Dux is a notorious con-man and habitual liar who had everyone believing he was some super secret CIA agent ninja in the 80s. Turns out he's a complete charlatan.
supernovice007@reddit
The Black Dragon Society is a real thing. It’s just a whole bunch of Frank Dux’ fraudster colleagues trying to sell people Bullshido lessons.
lemonylol@reddit
Well you have to consider at the time people thought Steven Segal was a totally legitimately lethal weapon and master martial artist. It wasn't very difficult to pass the bar.
Lostinthestarscape@reddit
"And here is the art of submissing 22 assassins so long as they choose to attack you from the front, one at a time, with bare hands."

"It's just like catch me if you can but with NINJAS!!!"

Stompedyourhousewith@reddit

lemonylol@reddit
It's an epilogue
CaliSasuke@reddit
Killer soundtrack indeed! Every time I listen to the soundtrack or watch the film I get psyched!
🎵“I fight to survive!
Kumite!
Kumite!
Kumite!” 🎶
I feel like I can run for miles or fight in the Kumite and make my father proud.
lemonylol@reddit
The other great song is Steal the Night, but for whatever fucking reason it's the only song excluded from the soundtrack.
CaliSasuke@reddit
Yeah, “Steal the Night” is awesome too! Has some fun synth work. Paul Hertzog certainly created some magic.
I’ll play the soundtrack on the background when I am working. Off of YouTube. So the track is included. Disappointing to hear they excluded it from the physical soundtrack. I’ll never understand decisions like that.
Paul Hertzog should have done more scores for for more films.
lemonylol@reddit
Yeah I play that youtube version in my car at night sometimes lol
You actually can add local songs to Spotify if you have premium but it's so finnicky.
CaliSasuke@reddit
That’s awesome. What a vibe! Cruising at night with the Bloodsport soundtrack playing.
Yeah, that’s why I tend to just stick to playing it on YT. No real issues other than commercial interruptions.
lemonylol@reddit
The soundtrack is phenomenal, I like to listen to it while driving in early in the morning or late at night. Like it's crazy that they wrote entire songs just for it.
SporesM0ldsandFungus@reddit
Dux claimed the Kumite was a 60 round tournament. A tournament with only 33 rounds would require the population of the entire planet to participate. There's a reason the March Madness is only 6 rounds.
ferminriii@reddit
2 to the 60th =1,152,921,504,606,846,976 participants
That's if it were single elimination though. (yes, I know he's a known liar)
But, if it were gauntlet style, you'd only need 61 fighters. :)
Also, if he meant the entire Kumite tournament had 60 matches then you'd still only need 61 fighters.
I want to meet the person who can do 60 fights. LOL
IanCrapReport@reddit

ForestElvenKing@reddit
attgig@reddit
Nuffsaid98@reddit
Most of his stories were very poorly told. This one, given the Hollywood treatment, was solidly entertaining. Most of his stories were not convincing or fun, just BS.
lemonylol@reddit
What's more funny to me is The Quest, which is almost literally the same tournament plot wrapped around a straight-to-DVD adventure story.
boulderama@reddit
The quest IS a sorta remake of Bloodsport. JCVD had a legal battle with Dux so he made that shitty movie.
AlphaDag13@reddit
This movie is really the 80's Catch Me if You Can. All the way down to the fact that it didn't happen. I fucking love both movies though!
Czar_Petrovich@reddit
That and that it features one of the only times that part of the interior of Kowloon Walled City is captured on film in a movie.

honestrade@reddit
I dated a girl whose dad claimed that he took a martial arts class from him in LA way back when. He said on his first day Dux asked him to volunteer for a demonstration and then demonstrated several techniques (not the Dim Mak apparently) that roughed him up quite a bit. He said he cussed out Dux and stormed out of the dojo. I guess Dux isn’t a great shidoshi.
dunkzilla@reddit
What’s the difference if Bruce Springsteen was his shidoshi?!
disinaccurate@reddit
A whole bunch of people back then, especially in that “tough guy” space, really built their reputation on complete bullshit.

lemonylol@reddit
That's more of a generic stolen valor thing.
KevinStoley@reddit
Not sure how true it is, but I've heard a similar thing about Frank Abignale (Catch Me If You Can)
Supposedly the vast majority of the stories in the movie which his was based off his life are fabricated bullshit.
If true, it's kind of funny. To pull of a con of making people think you were this legendary conman if you actually weren't.
RefraggedDefrag@reddit
Yet, think of how many people got into martial arts be abuse of this movie. Gotta love it.

"If you don't want to shit sparks, then you stay put!" TK-385@reddit
In Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart and The Quest, JCVD basically played the same character. However he actually moved around and did his signature splits which he can still do at his age.
In Time cop, Street Fighter, Universal Soldier and Hard Target, he didn't necessarily play the same character but he played "American" in Street Fighter, Universal Soldier and Hard Target. At least his character's accent was passed off as Cajun in UniSol and Hard Target to explain why he did have a typical American accent.

boards don't hit back

Yeah but every single tournament-based, movie, manga, anime, and tv show is based on Enter the Dragon.

Same boat watched this movie so many damn times because my father was OBSESSED with fighting movies. Had a customer at a tech job like 15 years back who's name was "Bong Lee" and bro would come in like once a week breaking shit so whenever he rolled up I'd start chanting "BONG LEE! BONG LEE! BONG LEE!!" and only the guys my age and older had any idea what I was on about.
Classic_Engine7285@reddit
Sorry, are we saying that’s not real?
addictedtolife78@reddit
This movie is stupid and a guy that is loosely based on a liar. the fact that the person who played the character in the movie isn't even the same nationality. And didn't even try to change his accent. Should tell you all what you need to know.
wynnduffyisking@reddit
Dude. You are missing the point of these kind of movies. They are supposed to be entertaining. That’s it.
addictedtolife78@reddit
yeah, this movie is only entertaining if you're either 10 or spending half the time opn your phone.
wynnduffyisking@reddit
Most of us watched it when we were 10. Its called nostalgia.
addictedtolife78@reddit
ok so its a movie that 10 year Olds would like. I personally find most of the stuff that 10 year olds like, including stuff that I liked when I was 10, to be stupid. but thats just me. you do you, I guess.
uselesschat@reddit
I wonder: the judge stopped him maybe because he knew Frank could break the brick but he wanted to throw him off by sending over closer inspection. Then Frank changed his way of hitting the stack of bricks. Instead of just standing still and meditating/focusing he went through the physical motions of preparing the punch, showing the judges that he isn't just strong or lucky but formally trained and worthy of the other kunite fighters

I rewatch this movie at least 3 times a year. It might honestly be my favourite movie even though quality-wise it's terrible. It just so strong in every other aspect that it somehow assembled together a great movie. Like one thing to particularly note is that many of the fighters are actual legitimate martial artists just going at it with no stunt work lol And then you have the fact that every single side character is memorable, from their guide dude to that one betting guy, to the fucking guy who cleans up the ring lol
