What fashion trend will you not give up?

Now that we are entering our 40s…are we supposed to dress our age? My mom likes to criticize my clothing choices. My shorts are too short for my age. I dress “sloppy.” Things seem to be working in my favor because 90s fashion trends are back. But I will never stop wearing:
- Jeans, esp with rips in them, or cutoffs
- Band shirts or graphic tees under flannel or zip up hoodies
- Short socks, none of that crew sock nonsense (looks like my grandpa from the 89s)
- Shorts with tights under them.
- My doc Martin’s
Things I’ve acquired a taste for:
- Leggings
- Oversized tshirts to hide my weight gain as it comes and goes
Things I won’t do:
- Kakis
- Tuck in my shirts
- Cut my hair short into old lady style like the golden girls
- Chunky necklaces or the I’m going yachting aesthetic
Loud-Strawberry8572@reddit
I've dressed the same way since 1992. Kinda the intersection of punk/grunge/corporate goth. It's a little more flattering and "tame" now that I'm 46, but my style hasn't really changed. What I love about that is that my students all think my outfits are cool.
Deep_Excitement1192@reddit
Golden Girls slander won't be tolerated!
freebyrd_soya@reddit
Golden AF is my cousin chat group name 🤣
trash_kitty@reddit
I absolutely love the Golden Girls but I also love my long hippie hair and hope I never have to do the "old lady" cut.
Independent_Tea_661@reddit
Rose is my spirit character, but not her hair! My mom has that old belief that "women of a certain age" must have short hair. My aunt has long silver hair and absolutely refuses to cut it off, it passes my mom off which makes all the rest of us laugh
Gia_Lavender@reddit
I don't really understand where the "women of a certain age" short hair cultural practice comes from....as a woman I've had both long and short hair, and the short hair took SO much more maintenance. With long hair I get 1-2 cuts a year.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I love them but I’m not cutting my hair like that
smcivor1982@reddit
I will never cut my hair short. I’ve had long hair my entire life and think those haircuts are ridiculous. My mom is in her 70’s and has avoided this type of cut, she looks great.
neonblackiscool@reddit
It aged them thirty years, but they are the best.
freebyrd_soya@reddit
No yachting? It’s the most fun I’ve had at work in ages, 😂
SweetAlhambra@reddit
You can pry my side part right tf off my head.
Any_Pickle_9425@reddit
I saw something that was “The side part is coming back!” I didn’t realize it left???
SweetAlhambra@reddit
Gen Z tried to make middle parts the only acceptable part. It does nothing for me other than making my face look round.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
Yeah well Gen Z likes broccoli haircuts and talking like absolute morons so who cares? FRFR
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
dafuk is going on with Gen Z and Gen A male haircuts....
They are like the Temu versions of 1980s male perms ffs...
My mum showed my nephews school play (or whatever it morphed into) and one of the kids had THE worst attempt at a "roadman" perm I've EVER seen....
Gia_Lavender@reddit
Temu perms omfg...
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
MULLETS, mustaches. UGH. Yeah kids are literally getting perms to get that goddamn broccoli haircut. They're going to a salon like my mom in 1988 to sit there for an hour with noxious chemicals in their hair so it'll curl and look like.... that. SO desperate to fit in. Like sure, we had bleached tips and some dumb stuff but god, there are whole swarms of them with identical haircuts. How do you not see that and snap out of it like "maybe I'm a dumbass?".
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
Its worse than what my wife (then gf) and I saw in a fast food place in Rotorua NZ in 2004, teen then in there looked like an extra from a mad max movie inc mullet - you know how HARD it is to keep an undiagnosed AuDHD Canadian Gf with NO filter or tact from causing a scene in a fast food place, particularly when confronted with a kid with a mullet?
neonblackiscool@reddit
I like broccoli hair tho! I don’t like the rest of their stuff tho.
SweetAlhambra@reddit
I’d say “skibidi toilet” to that, but I think that may be Gen A
Insomniac_80@reddit
.......“skibidi toilet” to that, but I think that may be Gen A! Gen A is frightening!
VelocityGrrl39@reddit
I’m pretty sure that’s Gen Alpha.
IceXence@reddit
Side part just looks better on most heads and it hides the grey roots way better too.
JLLIndy@reddit
My hair does not part in the middle 🤷🏼♂️ Natural part on the right side with cowlicks and all.
RedDotLot@reddit
Are you me? I can get my hair to centre part but it's a battle.
Can we bring back the zig zag parting?
squirrelsrnomnom@reddit
I'm 41 and have waist-length hair. Side part for as long as I can remember, but my teenage daughter parts her hair down the middle and wanted to see how mine would look with a middle part. When I say I looked like the damn crypt keeper and my mother's senior year yearbook photo birthed an abomination. Shit was rooough lookin'. She immediately parted my hair back where it goes and was like "ok, but please don't do that again..." You can pry that side part out of my cold dead hands 😂
BudgetAccident1287@reddit
I misread that as “damp” crypt keeper which oddly made a lot of descriptive sense.
squirrelsrnomnom@reddit
Spot on assessment, really. It was bad bad.
SweetAlhambra@reddit
My hair is like that too, and I’m 42. I felt this reaction in my soul.
AllTheStars07@reddit
Same. I have a pixie cut and I’m not doing a butt cut ever again.
TinyLittleWeirdo@reddit
Seriously. This middle part business just looks like an old lady style to me. Plus I look dumb.
Christie318@reddit
I have a widow’s peak, so I’ll never go middle part.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I side part my hair. Looks better. With side swept bangs
redjessa@reddit
Same.
0sqs@reddit
I don't have enough hair on top to part anymore.
SweetAlhambra@reddit
RIP 🪦 💔
puma_pantss@reddit
Jeans, Chuck Taylors and band t-shirts till I die.
User_Says_What@reddit
I need Chucks with orthotic insoles. I can't work with the flat insoles. My back and knees can't take the beating.
TapeFlip187@reddit
You know what my compromise is? Like if my boots and chucks had a baby? Palladium boots.
Crazy supportive without looking like Seinfeld shoes.
nerdygrrl42@reddit
Check out the hiking chucks—I had the same problem and the hiking version has a much more substantial sole, with extra cushioning and arch support to boot! They come in black and white and largely have the same look at the traditional low-tops.
User_Says_What@reddit
I've been hiking/trail running for over a decade. THERE ARE HIKING CHUCKS?!
nerdygrrl42@reddit
https://www.converse.com/shop/p/run-star-hike-canvas-platform-unisex-low-top-shoe/168816C.html?dwvar_168816C_color=black%2Fwhite%2Fgum&dwvar_168816C_width=standard&styleNo=168816C&cgid=run-star-hike Here’s the link!
User_Says_What@reddit
Thanks for the link, but with my big-ass feet, those things would look like absolute clown shoes on me.
CottaBird@reddit
This is my problem. I have wide feet and have to wear size 13 Chucks. I’m 5’8”, so I feel like a goddamn “L.”
User_Says_What@reddit
This is an excellent comment. Thanks for the chuckle.
WhyTeaNotCoffee@reddit
I also have wide feet!!
StormyStenafie@reddit
Same! I can get away with a women's size 10 for Chucks, but i would never buy the high tops or these because it would look ridiculous 🤡
TrentWolfred@reddit
Largely the same look? Nah.
nerdygrrl42@reddit
They look the same to me when I’m looking down at em poking out from under my jeans haha
Angie_O_Plasty@reddit
They look like a good way to roll an ankle, way too much of a platform, yuck!
popcorngirl000@reddit
Yeah, where I have I been to have missed HIKING CHUCKS???
AintNobody-@reddit
Yeah, I had to move on from Chucks to the Adidas Daily. Chucks are too flat and give me heel pain.
User_Says_What@reddit
I've moved to mostly Brooks running shoes as my daily wearers at this point, and I miss my Adidas Allstars very much.
MomsSpagetee@reddit
Brooks here too mostly. I hate the recent trend of the bottom part of shoes being 8 inches tall, ugly. Brooks avoids that on many styles thankfully.
User_Says_What@reddit
I remember when I got into running, I thought Brooks were just the ugliest shoes I'd ever seen. The colorways were bad and they were into shiny accenting. Then I saw Hokas and I've been fine in Brooks ever since.
Insomniac_80@reddit
Stick a pair of Dr. Scholls in them!
DeltaFlyer0525@reddit
I also had to give up my beloved chucks last year as even with inserts they were killing my feet after a few hours. I also wear adidas shoes now!
AintNobody-@reddit
There are dozens of us!
Geoff-Vader@reddit
I never got into Chucks. But as a former soccer player the Adidas Daily gives me vibes of wearing Sambas/Gazelles again. But I still have to put an extra insole in my Dailys to make them comfortable. I can't imagine how painful Chucks must be then.
AintNobody-@reddit
I had a pair of Sambas with the huge, wide tongue back in high school. Loved those things.
Yeah, I put heel cups in the Dailys. Insoles might not be far behind. The damage is done; I've got bone spurs in my heels. Man, this aging shit is great. :)
Enforcer-98@reddit
Haha I wear mine with insoles too. Thankfully they fit just fine.
RustyClawHammer@reddit
I have to sets of inserts in my converse. Gotta do what ya gotta do.
Abject_Mousse2900@reddit
I’ve been putting Dr scholls and sneers in my chucks for 15 years
round_is_funny@reddit
I was shocked a couple years ago on a cold day during a christmas lights tour and I could feel the cold from the pavement emanating up through my soles. I donated them immediately.
DollyDaydreem@reddit
Double socks in the winter solves this for me!
Pretend-Tea86@reddit
I need everything with orthotic insoles now. Work flats, chucks, everything but birkenstocks.
solomons-marbles@reddit
I’ve never been able to wear Chucks, I don’t know people can wear them. Most uncomfortable shoe ever.
CottageGrove81@reddit
I switched to Vans for that reason. So much comfier.
CelticSith@reddit
And even then, good luck trying to pry them off my cold dead body... I'll haunt your ass
bgva@reddit
I had a nice Chucks collection about 10-15 years ago and I really need to figure out why I stopped wearing them. Seems like society started declining after I stopped so I need to correct that.
slypmpkn19@reddit
As quickly as possible!
cocococlash@reddit
Please do
bgva@reddit
There's a Converse outlet near me and I get paid this weekend. Time to make the trek!
MsGoreJess@reddit
You're our only hope! No pressure.
Crash217@reddit
Same but Plain black t shirts. I prefer the mystery/anonymity of not having any logos on me.
puma_pantss@reddit
I can understand that. For me, a band provides me with insight, catharsis, enlightenment etc. least I can do is advertise for them.
Liquid-Hot_Smegma@reddit
I scored a Deftones shirt at Goodwill a couple months ago and I’m still stoked about it lol
littleredkitchen@reddit
This is the answer
Flippin-doo-da@reddit
💯 I just bought a few band shirts to freshen my wardrobe.
tallulahtaffy@reddit
I was looking for band tees in the fitted women's style - turns out that's now called "vintage fitted tee" and it's not an option at most merch tables anymore. I have seen the start and the end of the baby tee. I will have to go back to squirming into the x-large kids' shirts like I did in 1994 to get the tight fit.
allysung83@reddit
I just bought myself a Dead Milkmen shirt! 🙌
Flippin-doo-da@reddit
I’ve never heard of them! So I just checked out Bitchin’ Camaro and they’re talking about their band tree shirts 😂
allysung83@reddit
Ha, nice! Very goofy band, but I'm a goofy person, so it's a good match!
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
Haha same.
cocococlash@reddit
I found a Bad Religion tshirt that has the picture of them their current age (old). I love it.
puma_pantss@reddit
Well, what the hell? You're not even gonna say which ones?
Flippin-doo-da@reddit
😂 I either over explain or don’t say enough … Nirvana, Prince and I was gifted a Mars Volta tour tee.
puma_pantss@reddit
All good choices. I am more of an ATDI kinda guy, but good haul.
Flippin-doo-da@reddit
Well thank you. I love ATDI and became a fan of both Sparta and Mars Volta.
puma_pantss@reddit
So glad they reunited so I could get to see them live.
IDigRollinRockBeer@reddit
None of those are trends. They’ve all been in style for 60+ years
hamburgler26@reddit
This is pretty much where I'm at, although t-shirts vary more but fairly simple and casual.
I switch to a polo shirt for when when I'm in the office but otherwise just wear the same basic shit all the time.
Midnight_Marshmallo@reddit
Turning 42 this week and that's my uniform. Ordered myself a pair of custom Chucks for my bday.
alien-1001@reddit
Haha puma pants
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I still have a pair with vertical stripes
puma_pantss@reddit
I can't take credit. My friend and I would play Friday the 13th together and we saw someone with that username. We literally had to stop playing we were both laughing so hard.
I just laughed out loud now thinking about it.
alien-1001@reddit
Lol I had exited out of this before my brain caught up and had to come back to make sure I read right
Hudson1@reddit
Fuckin amen brother.
MommaOfManyCats@reddit
I will never ever give up my Converse! I still have a few pairs that are coming up on 20 years.
TrentWolfred@reddit
Is the rubber not degraded and cracking?
HungryHypatia@reddit
Me too! I’ll wear them til I die.
WildEthos@reddit
I don’t know if this is anyone else’s experience, but Chuck Taylors leveled up and they are way more comfortable than I remember.
Live_Barracuda1113@reddit
I like to add the extra insert. Chucks forever! Bonus that my 11 year old thinks I'm cool.
WildEthos@reddit
Amen. I learned about a decade ago that a pair of chucks, decent-fitting jeans and a plain black t shirt will never go out of style.
puma_pantss@reddit
It's all I've ever known, really.. so I don't have much of a frame of reference. Aside from winter boots, I've only ever worn Chucks, aside from the one glorious year my ma bought me Airwalks in 1998.
nohombrenombre@reddit
I was team airwalks too! Oh, and pumas. I found some three sizes too big at goodwill that I still wore because I liked them so much
puma_pantss@reddit
Although, full disclosure.. the "bands" have changed from Ministry and Skinny Puppy to John Coltrane and Marvin Gaye. No ragrats.
CaptinEmergency@reddit

Yeah I went from grunge and metal to listening to blues more than anything else now.
puma_pantss@reddit
Oh, don't get me wrong. I'll listen to TAD and Mudhoney on the regular.. but I'll also rock some Miles Davis. No changes.. just expansion.

John Coltrane!

Yup. The other 10% is my scrubs.
WolverineFun6472@reddit

Infinite-Excuse-5868@reddit
I can't wear Chucks because I live in a very walkable city that eats those shoes alive. Otherwise, same outfit but the shoes are Jordan Nikes that my mother refused to buy me.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
Chucks look cool but they're pretty crap quality. Anyone know of a dupe that's actually supportive and durable?
puma_pantss@reddit
I mean.. I do live in Toronto.. but maybe I have caveman feet. I'm not sure.
Infinite-Excuse-5868@reddit
ITT are people saying Chucks have improved so I'm probably wrong!
HangryHangryHedgie@reddit
I can't wear anything but Chucks or no arch shoes. I think its from growing up in flip-fkids. Saltwater sandles and keds.
x7leafcloverx@reddit
Heyyyoooo! This is me all day. Flannel shirts too. Although I've trending towards patterned short sleeve button ups for work lately. Not quite Hawaiian but you get the idea. I've got turtles, and fish, and skulls, and a Sasquatch one coming in! But you'll have to pry my jeans and my chucks from my cold dead hands. And my collection of hoodies. I think I have a different hoodie for each day of the month.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
This. I'll add ankle socks to the list. I cannot get into the whole high sock thing that is all the rage with Gen Z.
Groovychick1978@reddit
It's there anything else?
TapeFlip187@reddit
Hell yeah, let's kick it.
Party time. Excellent.
[Additionally, my jeans are tight and low waisted. Sometimes skinny, usually straight. If I put on a million pounds, oh well. people can enjoy the show. I will confidently stand there like the pug meme.]

I went the running shorts route bc they’re easy af, and kept my graphic tees. Flip flops and running shoes on the feet. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
symonym7@reddit
I'll always have a hoodie for every occasion.
I feel like I'm missing one..
Oh!
SLEEP HOODIE.
trguiff@reddit
I will NEVER give up my hoodies!
misskellycupcake@reddit
You can pry my skinny jeans and knee high boots and ankle socks off my cold dead body
motion_thiccness@reddit
I work out and want to show off my stomach because I put a lot of work into it, so I love crop tops. (Also perfectly acceptable to wear crop tops for those who don't work out or have flat stomachs, I'm just specifying that I specifically have worked hard on my body and want to show it off!)
I like to wear new trends if Ai like them, and I like my old staples like Docs and band tees, etc. too. Life is too short to dress any way other than how you want. All these social rules are made up, it isn't doctrine handed down by the universe that you have to dress AT ALL let alone any specific way at any time in your life.
AytumnRain@reddit
I wear the same shit I always have. Band shirt, baggy cargo shorts below my knee, cargo pants in winter, a hoodie when it's cold, and tube socks. I alao were the long jongs under my band tees in fall.
Purple-flying-dog@reddit
I love bright and colorful stuff. I like punny t-shirts. I like weird shoes and weird accessories.
What I have given up is the weight of others’ judgement. I used to put my weird clothes back in the closet. Now I wear them proudly and get far more compliments than dirty looks.
bigredandthesteve@reddit
My favorite shirt at the moment!!
Satellight_of_Love@reddit
Is this one those moments where you’ll always remember the first time you watched that scene? Bc for me it was on PBS and I was going through the breakup of my first love of my life and I was enthralled.

Satellight_of_Love@reddit
Dark blue boot cuts are my happy place.
injektileur@reddit
43 y.o. here. Shirt tucking remains a real struggle. I've always wanted to confirm our generation was the first one to untuck on a everyday everyhour basis. And sorry I'm not a native speaker, but I assume we are talking both about t-shirts and and dress shirts ?
Satellight_of_Love@reddit
I’m actually enjoying the shirt tucking a little bit. 🫣. As a younger Xer (also thanks for y’all letting me crash your party cause I hate the GenX sub), it reminds me of high school. We tucked everything back then. And rolled the sleeves on our t-shirts lol.
But yeah it’s not always working with the jeans I’ve been buying. Perimenopause is not being kind of my belly haha. But I think that those same hormone levels are also throwing out most of the fucks I still had left so maybe I’ll just do what I want? 💪
AvenhausArts@reddit
Untucked for T-shirts and polos. Weather permitting, a long sleeved shirt under a T-shirt like I’m going to see a band everyday.
TwoGoodPuppies@reddit
Skinny jeans ALWAYS.
TeaPotFancyPlants@reddit
Same. If I wore the wide-legged pants that I see in the stores now, I'd look massive. I like my skinny pants on my curvy hips! I feel feminine and sexy in them.

The preppy look never worked for me either. I won’t give up cut off shorts either haha, and I like my hoop earrings. I say wear what makes you happy. Life is too short to care too much what other people think. I find I look older if I try to dress too young, and I don’t like feeling old. But no way will I ever do the mom look! balancing out a “young” article of clothing with something more basic like darker jeans is a good balance for me. I personally don’t know anyone my age that is going for the mom look. That concept seems to be a thing of the past. So outdated.

I love my flared jeans. I'll take boot-cut if flared isn't available (it usually isn't). I refuse to wear straight-legged jeans. And forget about skinny-leg jeans (are those even still a thing?).

My mom’s generation wears Chico’s or Talbots style. The dads were kaki shorts with like Ralph Lauren button ups with boat shoes. In fact, any pair of shorts my dad’s generation wears are atrocious. My parents dress up to go to the restaurant. I’m like, I need to be comfy I’m throwing down and eating this food!

I started wearing overalls last year at 42. Whatever I’m wearing at whatever age I’m at is me “dressing my age”!
But to answer your question: I’ll never stop side-parting my hair. Middle part doesn’t lay right and I simply look BETTER with a side part so that’s what I’m gonna do
bytvity2@reddit
I’m way too happy about overalls being back. I lived in overalls in the mid to late 90s. I’m 45. Overalls are my happy place.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
My hair's getting too thin for a center part but I had that forever, with long hair.
No_Media4766@reddit
Yup either due to my annoying front-of-hairline cowlick or just general hair thinning or both, I have more hair on the front right side than the left. Plus a short forehead. So the center part just looks weird
neonblackiscool@reddit
Yep I have both thinning hair in front and a cowlick so middle part is a NO.

I've gotten chonky since hitting 40, 2 years ago. I've been hunting for a pair of cargo shorts every time I go to the thrift store. No luck yet. I used to be able to steal my husband's, but now he's smaller than me!

Never giving up my cargo shorts So comfortable and so many pockets to put stuff!
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
So many people hate on them but like what else are you going to wear? Can't put shit in basketball shorts. I wear them at home but my wallet, phone and keys will drop them right to the ground. Too heavy. I guess that's why bandolier kinda things seem to be in now? So.. Jorts? Hell no. Boat shorts or something that are basically just cargo shorts without the extra pockets? Nah. I know sometimes cargo shorts are a bit too baggy to look flattering but whatever.
jeffsang@reddit
I think I'm going to be buried in cargo shorts when I die. Will prob still need some extra pockets in the afterlife.

Kalle_79@reddit
I've always dressed quite formally (shirt+sweater throughout HS, polo shirt+sweater as an adult), so the "dress my age" was a problem but at the opposite end of the spectrum.
However there are "sins" I've always avoided and I don't plan on changing.
* no white socks
* no short tube socks (if not at the gym)
* no band/movies/TV t-shirts ever (unless at a concert/show)
Something I got rid of while aging:
* no more hoodies or sweatshirts with prints
* jeans have become somewhat tricky, especially since I lost weight as I can't find the sweet spot between "waist fits, legs are too tight/short, legs fit, waist is way too big".
* watches. Used to love them growing up. Now they feel bulky and impractical
* accessories. Bracelets, necklaces, whatever. Don't want extra weight and stuff on me anymore.
* shorts, even cargo shorts, unless I'm going to the beach or running some summer errands within a few blocks from home/beach
What I'll probably never give up.
My goatee. I know it's so 90s it's a cliché, especially with a bald head. But without it I feel naked and I'm not used not having it. NTM last time I shaved it I looked like a 16yo.

Are you me? Because those are similar criticisms I get from my mom: Why all the leggings? Why the band shirts (mostly from the 80s and 90s)? Why are your pants baggy? Did you pay extra for those rips in your jeans? When are you going to cut and perm your hair? Is that what you wore to work? Ya know, for a woman who grew up in the bellbottom, long hair, and miniskirt era, you'd think she would understand, but no.
My preteen daughter loves Chuck Taylors. Those are the only shoes she will wear. My mom hates it.

Leggings. Pants don't work for women whose waists are a bigger dress size than their hips or butt. It's a choice between digging into my stomach or looking like MC Hammer. So I wear leggings with long tops, blazers, and boots instead.
Long hair. No way am I ever cutting my hair the way every woman did the moment she hit 40 back in the day.
Short or knee length skirts and dresses. I won't be overheating just because I am in my 40s.

I've lost all taste for discomfort, which means, unless I REALLY have to, I don't wear pants with buttons, high heels or bras. I've traded my leggings for loose fitting stretchy pants. I don't mind skinny jeans although I've pulled out all my old 90s low rise and Abercrombie. I'm disgusted that my "fast fashion" of the 00s has such a marked difference in quality. My old shirts are not only a million times smaller (but labelled M or L), but the collars are thick, the cotton is thick, the seams are flat and perfect. Comparitively today's tees are tissue paper.

With the notable exception of Millennials love affair with crazy print crew socks under pants in the latter aughts and 2010s - both Gen X and Millennials worked hard to eradicate the world of the scourge of crew socks with shorts.
I was born in 76 so I 'had' to wear crew socks when I was a little kid in the 80s - that's just what we did. You had no choice in the matter really. But as soon as we were old enough we started scrunching them down around our ankles until ankle and no-show socks finally took off. If the cycle was repeated with just kids that's ok. But you've got 20-somethings rolling around in those things. I can chalk up old photos of me in crew socks to me being a kid. They chose their fate of embarrassing photos they'll look back on as willing adults.

Some people do and it’s weird AF to me. Like Robyn Brown on Sister Wives with the floral blouses and slacks. I still have tons of visible tattoos and wear lots of black.

chappyfu@reddit
My closet is 90% black and grey and I love my alt clothes. I figure I will dress this way until I hit my 80s and them I'm going to wear the most God aweful tacky ass old lady clothes I can find and dye my hair purple just for fun.

Wide leg/ bell bottom/trouser style type pants. I cannot stand any pants touching my shins.
LKayRB@reddit
Are you me? You had me on every point other than 3.4 - I love a chunky necklace (though they’re on ice rn as they’re “out of style”) and I will rock a preppy yacht look real quick.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
You know those necklaces that come with Talbots outfits? Or those big round ball necklaces…paired with a tshirt dress. Reminds me of my prep school days and I hate it.

Overalls. I like the pockets.
honeybadgergrrl@reddit
My mom used to complain about the way I dress, but I just started saying, "Ooh ok so are you taking me shopping??" She stopped complaining about my clothes, lol. She's also chilled out a LOT as she's aged. She's even embraced some of my more goth-y, going out outfits of the last few years.
I'll never stop wearing Adidas (the flat ones like Superstars never the athletic ones), baggy jeans, Docs, or Birkenstock sandals. I won't chop my hair off and style it like a golden helmet. I will wear a chunky necklace, but only if it's turquoise or some other cool stone, as I have family from New Mexico and it's in the culture haha.
Camsmuscle@reddit
I am in my late 40’s. I break out into a cold sweat at the idea of going anywhere near a store like Chicos. They’ll have to pry my jeans and graphic t-shirts from me.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I keep wondering if it’s going to happen to me. My mom has tried to give me some of her hand me downs. Here’s the problem: they are boxy and meant to flatter older woman. So the cut is all wrong for anyone under 60 or who isn’t a teacher
Camsmuscle@reddit
As a teacher I promise you it doesn’t flatter us either.
I just don’t understand the desire for a shapeless tent. I understand if you have mobility issues needed to focus strictly on ease and comfort. But, I still want to look cute. Most women I know my age or even older don‘t want to dress the way their mothers did 30 years ago.

Chucks were great back in the day when they were under $20 but then they sold to Nike? I think it's Nike, and they upped the price to over double overnight and I just can't for canvas shoes. Vans are better. They have a ton more padding and are more far more comfortable.
ohmeursault@reddit
My hobbit feet never worked well with Chucks anyway. Gimme the big fat sneakers all the way.

Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
Yes that’s def a look. I went to private school So I wore it. I was forced into it, so my grunge look was my rebellion to it. So I refuse your style but I appreciate you sticking with what you like. I worse khakis, tucked in button downs or collared shirts, clunky wedge like 👡.
Burlington-bloke@reddit
I just got new glasses on Tuesday. I went for the frameless option. I can't bring myself to wear the Jeffrey Dahmer glasses all the youngins are wearing nowadays. I've been wearing glasses since the early 90s. There's no way in hell I'm wearing, what we called "trucker glasses" again!
slappy_mcslapenstein@reddit
I've worn the same belt buckle since the early 2000s. It's just one of those ones that they used to sell at a mall kiosk but I love it and I'm not giving it up any time soon. It's a brushed silver color with a scorpion in the middle.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I have a studded belt might be the only thing I aged out of
mzshowers@reddit
Things I will (probably) never stop wearing:
Flannel/plaid shirts !! I have loved em since the 90s and I don’t see that ever going away! I love them with a band t shirt or graphic tee beneath, too! Or a tank! And with perimenopause, it’s great to have a cooler and warmer option at all times 😂 I wrap a flannel around my waist when I get too hot, throw it back on when I’m freezing to death!
Hippie dresses/skirts! I still love those 90s hippie skirts and dresses.. I guess they call it whimsigoth these days, but I LOVE those things!! Add in a gauzy poet shirt and I’m in love!
I still love my jeans… cute hoodies.. plaid shorts.. my long hair.. I still have a love for black, but I use a bit more color these days.
I will try all kinds of things, but don’t see any of these things changing 😂
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
Sounds like we have a very similar style. I will also not be taking out my nose rings any time soon, stop dying my hair black, wearing "baby/Bettie" bangs and more.

Hermit_Ogg@reddit
I'm giving none of it up. Yeah I look like an eccentric culture aunt, and have for the past ten years. I don't plan on stopping.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)

Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
My friends joked as soon as I turned 34 I’d start shippping at chicos and banana republic. Happy to say I still buy graphic tees, oversized comfy sweaters, hoodies and flannel shirts.
nicvaykay@reddit
Jeans, baby doll t-shirts (bands and puns), oversized band shirts, Adidas shell toes, hoodies and leather jackets (worn together when the weather warrants). I'm so happy to see the 90s back in fashion.
Dad3mass@reddit

Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)

chappyfu@reddit
At 43 I still can't see myself dressing "old" anytime soon and giving up my staples. Knee high combat boots, skinny jeans, cut off shorts, mini dresses, leggings etc. I really like my alt style and just can't imagine not wearing it. I guess I just hope I don't look like I'm going through a mid life identity crisis. Which I think I'm ok anyways because most people think I'm around 30 still.
The only thing I have noticed as I have aged is I have prioritzed comfort more- so I am more focused on what materials my clothes are made of and how comfy they feel to wear instaed of just wearign the item to be fashionable.
Maia_Azure@reddit (OP)
I think we are all in it together so it won’t be a crisis
ms_flibble@reddit
Why would people think you look like you were going through a mid life crisis? We wore these things first. I'm 46 and dress in a similar manner. Weaponize those combat boots.
chappyfu@reddit
I think the fear stems from when I was younger and my friends 45 year old mom would buy all the newest trending clothes and then try to hang with us and act like a teenager and to try to insert herself into our friend group constantly...like seriously half the time we did stuff she would show up and act like a ditzy reckless teenager the whole time- not like an adult at all. It was so weird- she would try to give us wine coolers all the time. I heard she even tried to hook up with some of the older dudes at one point but they still might have been just 17 at the time.
So I'm always very cautious about how I approach and interact with my friends teenagers when we do family game nights or outings etc. I also do some mentoriship with teen girls so I make sure they know I am someone they can count on and be there to talk about the stuff they are going through but that I'm not trying to be like them or become a teenager again and relive the good old days if that makes sense.
In the end I'm gonna wear whatever the heck I want too- life is to short to conform to something you are not.

Your 1 and 2 are on my list along with never getting rid of my 70’s era vintage leather jackets and pair of chucks (that I buy different colors for different days). I don’t dress like I’m 40+ but I also manage to avoid that cringey “hello fellow kids” look that some people fuck up so I’ll just be happy about that.
People tell me now how awesome and vintage I look and I’m like “I just never stopped wearing this stuff”. My mother was right, if you just wait long enough you’ll be back in style again.

Ankle socks because of how it feels, I don't care about the current style. But yea, it looks super dorky when people wear socks up their calves, but what do I know?
Reno83@reddit
Straight leg jeans, long sleeve flannels, and a clean pair of all-black chucks or casual boots. I refuse to tuck my shirts in like the generation before us. However, I do button up the buttons (except for the top one). Untucked and unbuttoned flannel shirts definitely give off old dad vives.
eaten_by_the_grue@reddit
Whatever I damn well feel like. Usually Chucks, denim, and graphic Ts, but I've been known to glam up in rockabilly-esque dresses with full make up and an updo.

I was huge into hip hop in the 90’s so loved baggy clothes. I eventually gave into the skinny jeans. Now I recently settled on not too baggy but not skinny jeans. I got some rag and bone that fit nice. Super comfy and don’t make me looked dated (like skinny jeans) but also not so baggy it looks like you’re chasing trends and having a mid-life crisis.
I never liked the no show socks so I’m happy to embrace the crew socks look. Now my no shows are worn around the house as slippers only lol

Won’t give up: jeans, band shirts, silly gory T-shirts (reminiscent of happy tree friends), crew/knee high socks (because neurodivergent sensory issues), checkerboard
Gave up: my Chucks (I’m terribly flat footed), baseball caps, cargo shorts/pants, khakis (private school dress code), tucked in shirts (see previous), cheap gaudy bro sunglasses, obnoxious Hawaiian shirts off the clearance rack that are hard on the eyes (rebelling within school dress code)
Acquired a taste for: a very specific style of cowboy hat (a la Rick Grimes, not rodeo style), cowboy boots (round toe, please), unique belt buckles (not that I tuck in my shirt anyway), American optical/Randolph aviators, snap button western shirts, wearing purple, obscure bird apparel (long time birder)

Personally, I've never cared about dressing my age, at least not these days. When I was eleven to fifteen or so, I made a point of dressing on the younger and less polished side or I got attention I didn't want from men.
But as adults, jeans and jeans shorts, and cargo pants and shorts, and Chucks and Vans and Docs, and t-shirts are basically just what people our age wear now when left to our own devices. Styles are more casual than they were when our parents were our age, and more of us agree it's arbitrary bullshit. I only ever wore khakis or tucked in my shirt if a dress code demanded it (sometimes not even then; I spent an entire year of middle school with a flannel tied around my waist because tucking in shirts annoys the shit out of me and "sensory issues" weren't a thing in 1994-'95). When I wore business casual for work, itmight as well have been a uniform, I felt so out of place.
Also, back in high school when I did start caring about clothes a little, our local mall sucked. Now I can go to the company website, see all the options they make, and order whatever I want, thanks to internet access and adult money. I'm enjoying that to its fullest extent, and if someone thinks my Converse Lifts are immature, I don't give a fuck.

In 1999 I discovered my outfit. Blue Jeans (preferably carpenters or dungarees), a printed T-shirt, and a flannel shirt. If it gets hot, I tie the flannel around my waist.
colly_mack@reddit
I remember in the 90s asking my mom why my grandma and other old people all seemed to wear the same clothes. (So many polyester slacks!) Her answer was it's a version of what was popular when they were young, and one day people her age (boomers) would be old in jeans. And now it's our turn to define what old people wear.
Elle3786@reddit
My flannels. They came and went out of style at least twice that I know of, but they can pry them from my cold, dead hands. So comfy, a light one is good in case I get cold, a heavy one is good to actually keep me warm, either are good for layering. I love them and I have lots that are very comfortably broken in.
vintage_seaturtle@reddit
Jeans, tshirts(graphic, vacation spots), cut off jean shorts, Birkenstocks.
agardenofbooks@reddit
You can pry my Converse/Dickies/band tees combo out of my cold dead fingers.
Messijoes18@reddit
I hate shorts that don't go to the knees
memyselfandi78@reddit
Baggy jeans, Vans, Birkenstocks, graphic tees. My two teenage nieces told me that I still dress like a teenager.
Plus25Charisma@reddit
I only wear crew socks with my work boots. Any other time it's no show socks, especially with shorts. Had a dude at my job comment how no show socks were for boomers, so I told him my dad is a boomer and he dresses just like him. Other than that when I'm out and about: jeans or shorts and a band shirt with Chucks or Globe skate shoes. If I'm feeling fancy, jeans, Chucks and a pearl snap shirt, untucked.
mouthtoobig@reddit
Band T-shirts forever with the necks cut off and black leggings. Forever. It's my uniform.
PhantoWolf@reddit
I was always a Chucks or boots with greaser jeans and black tshirts or band shirts 'growing up' (14-34) So, like every other guy that likes punk and metal or played in a band. Haha
At some point, I became conscious of being middle aged and did not want to look like a guy trying to look younger. That shit makes me shudder.
Like those old dickheads on the auto restoration shows that wear the goofy Ed Hardy shit... 60 year old men with Tribal designs stitched on the asses of their rhinestone boot-cut liberace jeans and sparkly affliction shirts. hahahaha Younger me wants to stomp the Creed outta those guys.
So, same as I did when I was young, I avoid trends other than the trend of trying not to be a trend...
I wear a plain black T-shirt every day. Makes shopping easy. I buy the same pack of Jockey Ts every couple months.
Still wear my converse for short trips, but if I'm going to be walking or standing around, I'm forfeiting cool points and wearing my Salomon or Hoka..
I still wear my leather bracelets and Japanese import Casio watches- The more garish and retro the better.
Definitely short socks til I die. Unless I'm wearing boots.
My buddy was wearing the long ones with some white New Balance, cargo shorts, and a polo and I told him I'm gonna buy him a boonie cap so he can be Ug from Salute Your Shorts.
Ok_Roof_9333@reddit
Blue Jean jacket. I walked into work one day wearing it and jeans and the kids said hey Denim Dan, nice Canadian tuxedo
Kim_Smoltz_@reddit
Mostly wear jeans/cutoffs, band shirts, hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts. Still rock a white oxford button up to work some (untucked, rolled sleeves, with jeans) but I went to private school so that feels like part of the vibe to me. Always wear vans. It helps that I work in tech and live in Seattle. The biggest grown up change are these comfy black cotton “slacks” that are drawstring from wild fang. Black pants like that in the mix immediately seem more grown up compared to jeans.
PopcornSurgeon@reddit
I love bright colors. I feel like everything I see online says the in thing now is to wear khaki, tan, brown, gray. No thank you!
savantalicious@reddit
A hoodie, tshirt, cargo shorts or leggings, and converse. I might look frumpy now that I’m in my 40s, but man am I comfortable.
Lightsabermetrics@reddit
Jeans, band shirt, and ballcap. I've been dressing this way for most of my life at this point.
bgva@reddit
You might as well bury me in my cargo shorts. They’re too convenient with all the pockets.
Thamnophis660@reddit
Jeans and band shirts/horror movie shirts, a baseball cap and chuck taylors. Never strayed from it since I was a teenager.
Dependent-Ad-2694@reddit
I will never give up jeans and flannels for the fall. I will wear supportive sneakers and never wear fancy shoes unless for work or fancy events. I will dress how I want and never for my mother's expectations. If she wants me to dress differently, she can send me the clothes and I'll consider it if I like them.
KingdomOfFawg@reddit
Hoodies and baggy jeans. If I could find a pair of DC shoes that I liked, I would dress the same as I did in 1998.
Beaverhuntr@reddit

UntidyVenus@reddit
Same, and I'm a beer judge
msondo@reddit
same, it’s like my middle aged dad uniform. I try to pick one up whenever I travel.
That and pandemic-era fancy loungewear. Vuori pants that look like casual slacks but are really just really comfy pajamas
Ok-Guitar-6854@reddit
I'm 47 and still rock jeans and combat boots. I will NOT cut my hair short. I will still put on a band tee and flannels. Ankle socks for life. Shorts all the time that are usually cut-offs. It's all still ME and I think I look fine.
partmachine623@reddit
Puma suedes, jeans and a tee for life.
pantheroux@reddit
Vans, hoodies, flannels and graphic t-shirts.
I will never wear anything low waisted again, no matter how trendy it becomes. Low waisted jeans did not work for me in the late ‘90s/early 2000s, but I bowed to peer pressure, and there weren’t a lot of other options at the time. Now, IDGAF. I’ve learned that it looks and feels better to wear what fits well, even if it may not be trendy. Luckily, all different fits of jeans seem to be available now.
keyboard_jock3y@reddit

My normal attire is still old jeans, beat up Chuck Taylor’s, a faded t-shirt and messy hair or backwards hat. I’ll probably still be wearing it if I make it to my 60s.
Octowuss1@reddit
Hoodies.
cellshock7@reddit
I have some dark colored windbreakers (swishies) that I kept from the 90's that still fit so I still wear them lol. Loved them so much and no one makes them anymore. Shame on them.

Jeans and band shirts: Green Day, Queen, My Chemical Romance, Volbeat, Takida, and Ghost are my jam, and that's how I'll dress until I die. It used to be solely Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and Good Charlotte back in the halcyon days.
Mammoth-Giraffe-7242@reddit

I’ll never not wear cargo shorts in the summer. I have nice, shorter inseam shorts for nice occasions but cargos have too much functionality.
misterlakatos@reddit
I will wear one of my many Adidas track jackets until the day I die. I have owned a few of them for close to 20 years. I also wear a few hoodies all the time.
I also own several colored t-shirts without any logos. I have been wearing these for many years. I have three from Banana Republic that are gym shirts now.
I went through a hipster phase and swore off shorts while in undergrad and for a few years after. I wear shorts all the time and even in the winter whenever taking my dog out before bed I throw on a hoodie with my shorts. I cannot handle jeans in the summer.
Snoo58207@reddit
Thermal under a button-up shirt. Especially a Hawaiian shirt.
A couple months ago, I saw a guy in super baggy jeans with a knee-length wallet chain with the hemp rope. I just thought keep living your best life bro.

Backwards ballcap.
Ken Griffey Jr. made it cool, and I still do it to this day.

You can pry my band shirts out of my cold, dead hands. You will also not catch me in khaki's, short hair, or chunky necklaces.
I wish I still had my Steve Madden slides. :( I would wear the fuck out of those no matter how loud they are!!!!
Also I will be keeping both bootcut and skinny jeans in my closet because they serve different purposes but neither will be "ultra super lowrise" no thank you.

Being postpartum and then Hitting 45 I’m definitely rediscovering my style and it’s more modest, looser, incorporates half tucks and is based on my color analysis season (can’t afford to wear unflattering colors at this point!). Also trying to be more intentional about what flatters and balances my body rather than just trying to look as small as possible.
beccadahhhling@reddit
Boot cut jeans
I have never worn skinny jeans. I hate clingy fabric and skinny jeans sound like a nightmare. Straight or barrel legged jeans make me look like an ogre.
Nothing better than an old boot cut.

41 here. Band shirts, overalls, jeans, Vans, Doc Martens. Denim jackets and flannels as the weather cools.

Inevitable_Tone3021@reddit
I've collected 60s & 70s vintage fashion since high school in the 90s, and I think the aesthetic is such a part of me by now I'll never let it go.
In the 90s, I could find these clothes mixed into the regular racks at thrift stores.
15 years ago, I had to start going to vintage stores.
Now, 60s & 70s vintage stores are being replaced by 90's & 2000 vintage stores, so I have to look a little harder for the stores that carry what I like.
chrismcshaves@reddit
I still wear band paraphernalia. Not excessively. Just my niche favs that hardly anyone knows about it.
I get accused of earring skinny pants…..I have never done so. I wear slim fit and there is a large difference. Straight and relaxed look slouchy on me because my legs are a mile long.
rajalove09@reddit
Jeans and a tshirt

Band shirts, flannel, jeans, and doc martens till I die.
I have very, very curly hair. 3c hair, but very fine. All the women in my family cut it very short into the family hairstyle when they start going grey because it becomes so unmanageable. I refuse. Absolutely. But it's getting so frizzy now where it's white, and no amount of conditioner is taming it. It broke a hairbrush the other day, it is untameable.

Pearl snap western style shirts, long and short sleeve. Starting rocking these in the early 00s when I found an especially 70s/80s looking one in a thrift.

I still dress like I’m 20. Even after having children and being in my 40s, besides my hips being slightly larger I only went from a size 1 to a size 5.
I know my mom cringes a bit, but I still wear the same weird colorful garbage I wore in 2002 with my super long hair. The only difference is I don’t dye my hair anymore and I let all my piercings close in.

Side part, flannel, tunics, I actually want to find some mid-90s flower print babydoll dresses (not too short)

Graphic tees of my favourite media. I got a t-shirt from Loot Crate that had Optimus Prime doing the Tron pose. It’s my favourite shirt.

I kept progressing my style with age until about 10 years ago. Since then I've been wearing chinos with fitted t-shirts (no graphic) or polos and a flat cap.
