ULPT Request - speeding tickets from Australia

I'll start by saying I live in the UK. Was driving a rental in Sydney a few weeks back and got caught speeding. When I returned the car I spoke to the rental company and the guy behind the counter said not to pay it. The fine letter has now come to my house in the UK, I'm still determined not to pay it but my wife is freaking out about it. We don't plan on going back to Australia anytime soon. Any advice?

Dont pay it, nothing will happen. I know heaps of people who have done this and gone back home. Just bin the fines

Worst case scenario, and I know this as a lawyer who has had clients in this situation, is that non payment of the original fine can escalate, accruing further fees. Continued non payment can end up in court, and if you're not there, it can result in an arrest warrant. Yes, Australia is terribly over regulated, and this might not be an issue if you never return, but could be problematic if you do. Good luck.

The statute of limitations is 7 years, same as the UK. Also, the same as the UK is the fact that they are inviting you to pay a speeding fine to a corporation.
They will eventually sell the fine to a collection company. Also same as the UK.
Up to you

Either pay or send a formal letter stating "Reckon I wasn't there eh ya cunt." This usually sees proceedings dropped.

you were speeding though, not like its a made up fine
pay it or may get a knock at your door with Paul Hogan waiting

If you ever want to go back you really should pay. They are really no chill over there, and i say that as a german

I mean is there really any tips for you here? I think you already have the options you pay it or you dont
You dont pay:
Probaly issues getting back into AUS
Potentially with other countries too if you get put on a list somewhere
Potential for issues since they appear to care enough to send a letter to your Uk address
You dont pay:
You dont have to spend money
If you feel like the potenital downsides outweigh the price for the fine for you, then pay it. If they dont, then dont :)

Bet it’s a fucking huge fine, right?

Do the right thing and pay it.
Especially if you ever want to visit, migrate, study in Aus in the future.
