How do I get rid of moles in my garden?

The little bastards are tearing up my grass and every day there’s a new molehill.
Any suggestions very welcome. I’m desperate….

I'm in France, there's a product called "Detauper" https://www.excellium-antinuisibles.com/749-le-detaupeur-piege-anti-taupe.html?msclkid=df8ed235efc01c765fecba5a992a0f97&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%20rongeurs%20(Sans%20Excellium)&utm_term=2335775015094157&utm_content=Groupe%20d%27annonces
Which really DOES work. Don't know if you can get it in UK.

"detonators"

We’ve tried all sorts of deterrents. Marshmallows, coffee grinds, you name it. We don’t get enough sun the year round for the solar powered sonic spikes to work. A battery powered one didn’t do much anyway.
The only thing that has been promising so far is to bury firelighters about 8-10in down. I tried finding the tunnels first, but they might work fine in the molehills too. I like the Zip ones, but any brand that smells strongly of Kerosene should be fine. Don’t crumble them, a decent chunk will work in the ground for longer.
They have been promising, but you have to keep at it as they try to find a way in around the blocks you’ve buried.
I like this approach because you don’t kill them, just make your patch unappealing.

Rewild your lawn, let it go a bit wild & being grateful you have some wildlife in one of the world's most nature depleted countries (yes the UK)
Monoculture is crap anyway, and within time you'll have all sorts of interesting insects and animals.
DTTBP@reddit
Invite them into the house, once they know you've got a comfy sofa and can take a little nap in your duvet, they're never going to consider destroying the garden.
Swimming_Possible_68@reddit
Just watch out if a toad wants to join in. He will probably nick your car and go joyriding!
V65Pilot@reddit
Fuck that toad.
flyingmooset@reddit (OP)
My sofa isn’t that comfy
DTTBP@reddit
Then put it in the garden and let them decide 😂

Get in an experienced agent like George Smiley. Take care though as it’s a risky business.

Why not live with them? Live trapping may be an option, but they will always come back. Repellent devices may work. Killing moles because they inconvenience your sensibilities, is just spite. If you cause any unnecessary suffering to wild animals, you may breach the law.
flyingmooset@reddit (OP)
I’m guessing you don’t have a garden.
woods_edge@reddit
Get a robot lawn mower and let it run through the night, mine seems to keep them away.
SpinyGlider67@reddit
Mashed potato.
Attracts badgers who then go on adventures with the moles.

The only year I had no moles was the year I buried some cheap headphones in a small plastic container in the grass, had the radio playing 24 hours a day, guess they didn't like the mix of frequencys.
SpudFire@reddit
I guess it had to be a station playing mainstream music, I've heard moles quite like the underground music scene
BroodLord1962@reddit
Had this problem a number of years ago in another property. We bought a couple of solar powered mole deterrent, and they worked. It puts out a sonic frequency that moles don't like

An old countryman's trick was to bury an empty bottle in the mole-run, standing upright, with the open mouth above ground. Apparently the moles don't like the noise that the wind makes as it blows over the open mouth. Don't know if it works, but it's worth a try, anyway.
rustylust@reddit
Employ a mole catcher, they will leave it for you to see after.

Yes expert of many years here - I believe you need an oversized mallet and speedy reactions.

This problem came up when I moved to my current house - the bastards are everywhere.
My wife asked me to take care of them, then a week later when I presented her a freshly slaughtered mole, she was upset - it seems she wanted me to take care of them in the Mary Poppins sense, not the Al Pacino sense.
However, it is the Al Pacino sense that is required. They aren't difficult to kill.
There are two main types of traps - tunnel type and claw type. I recommend the tunnel type. You will also want some gloves to use when setting the traps - since moles are essentially blind, they have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, and if there's the smell of you on the trap, they will avoid them.
To set the trap, find the latest mole hill, push aside the mound and you'll find a plug of mud. Shove your finger through that and you'll find the tunnel, which will typically be straight. You need to pull aside enough mud to get the trap into the tunnel, then you cover it up again. The mole will think it's tunnel has collapsed, so will come along to fix it, and the trap will kill the fucker.
It's tricky to start with, but you'll get good at it.
Then you can move onto the fucking rabbits............
Fantastic-Field-ForU@reddit
You could pay an expert but most of the ways are fairly inhumane I.e. you may have to kill them via poison or traps.
Unfortunately, these are probably the most effective ways of dealing with them. However, you can also buy repellents that vibrate the ground to unsettle them. Hopefully after this they move (this method is pretty cheap too).
Fresh-Research3450@reddit
Get those small windmill toys and stick them in the molehills, the vibration from them deters the moles as they try to hunt worms, it's weird but it works.
