Visiting California in a few days and wondering if there’s anything we should avoid that irritates the locals?

To add onto the above, OP, we are not interested in being admonished with anecdotes about how your country does everything better than us. For example: you *will* tip your server. This is customary. Being from a foreign country does not excuse you. You're a guest. Act like one. When in Rome...

My worst fear is getting in trouble for not tipping lol
View on Reddit #61181580

Don't listen to the internet on this one telling you you should tip 30% that's ridiculous. 15% is acceptable and 20% is good. And if you served yourself or bought something at a counter don't feel pressured to tip just because there is a line on a stupid screen. It's appreciated if they gave you good service, but not expected. Yeah American tipping is weird but don't stress about it.
View on Reddit #61185924

randypupjake@reddit

This is going to be highly unpopular, but California is one of the states that wouldn't be as bad to not tip. Sure they should be paid more but they at least will be paid California minimum wage before tips, unlike some states that pay much less than federal minimum wage.

yes, this in spades. You are a guest in the country, be on your best non political behavior. but pretty much Americans do not care what a tourist does.....most will even go out of our way to help you out

That's great to hear. The good news is that all the other picayune stuff being mentioned will be largely diffused if you make some faux pas once you open your mouth and folk hear the accent. I have found that to be true when traveling abroad. Might you meet an asshole? Sure. But without assholes there wouldn't be kind people.

View on Reddit #61178157

I absolutely agree. I worked for elected officials for about a decade and still work in a political adjacent job. I learned early to lie about what I do for a living when talking with strangers off the clock. Honestly, couldn't tell what I hated more; you love my boss or you hate my boss.

I tried all kinds of things. I settled on, "I work downtown." And if that wasn't sufficient, "It's sort of difficult to describe." If they still didn't figure out I wasn't interested in discussing it "It involves a lot of regulation compliance," If you were the type of insistent type and asked what's the name of the company "It's a really small outfit"

View on Reddit #61179145

Little-bigfun@reddit (OP)

Ok thank you. I’m going to stick to tipping table service about 20%, if there’s a bellboy and valet. What do you think about tipping the bar for drinks?
View on Reddit #61179229

Mr_BillyB@reddit

Yes. Bellboy/valet I'd probably do a flat $5. Drinks at the bar I'm doing $1 per beer, glass of wine, or shot, and $2-3 for mixed drinks. If I'm running a tab instead of paying individually, I'm doing 15 or 20% when I close it.
View on Reddit #61179777

uReallyShouldTrustMe@reddit

I’ve been pre programmed to tip servers, bars, and valets… basically anything that was normal to tip 20 years ago. However I also lived abroad for over a decade in a non tipping country and you know what… service in the US is ass and privileged by comparison. I only tip to save face and not be embarrassed but I’m not tipping the convenience store or Starbucks.
View on Reddit #61179602

Little-bigfun@reddit (OP)

I think that’s crazy to tip convenience stores lol Starbucks is also odd. We tip at restaurants here if the food is really good and the service has been great but it’s not expected. When people get tipped here they are shocked and so happy.
View on Reddit #61179704

butt_fun@reddit

Might not be an issue in CA where waiters make tips on top of minimum wage, but in other states you're effectively deciding that your server just straight up shouldn't get paid
View on Reddit #61177828

uReallyShouldTrustMe@reddit

Nope; that’s just not how it works. In 9 or so states, including California, a lower minimum wage for tipped workers is illegal, which you pointed out. However, what tipping proponents always conveniently omit are the caveats for below minimum wage laws. For starters, many major cities like DC, Chicago, and Florida cities have banned sub minimum wage, despite what their states say. In addition, in all 50 states, regardless of sub minimum laws, an employer is legally obligated to make up the difference if the employee doesn’t at LEAST make minimum wage. In the extremely unlikely scenario that an employee makes below minimum, had a very slow week, and the employer is refusing to keep their mandate to pay up, that’s on the employer, not on the customer to be guilt tripped. There is a whole narrative of below minimum wage tipped employees which is simply not based on reality.
View on Reddit #61178555

butt_fun@reddit

I'm aware of all of that you schnoz I just have a moral reservation against refusing to pay someone for their service, regardless of whether they more than recoup it from other patrons

Putting themselves in danger. By not familiarizing themselves with maps, and not understanding how large America is. The amount of tourists I’ve met that think they can have a little 1hr drive to the other side of the country is astonishingly high. When y’all get mad about someone wanting to bond over ancestral genetics. They aren’t saying they personally are fresh off the boat, they’re just saying that they are genetically also from that country. It’s a bid for connection with you. Calling us fake for caring about strangers wellbeings, or smiling at strangers. Though the cold shoulder/rude behavior does still exist here, most of us do genuinely care, and are smiling because we’re happy in that moment. When y’all claim that America has no culture. America has culture, and cultural norms will even vary state by state. When y’all are rude to staff, or anyone else in public facing jobs. I hate it when Americans do it too… They’re people and should be treated with basic human kindness and decency. Littering. This is especially irritating in certain states, and some locals might even hand you back your trash. There are trash cans in public, and even recycling bins in many areas now too. I hope you have a fun and safe trip here! California is an absolutely gorgeous state, with a lot of wonderful and kind people. If you can stop into a California Welcome Center to talk with staff and get a free map (you might lose cell service if you go out into nature), I highly recommend that you do!
View on Reddit #61180093

Little-bigfun@reddit (OP)

Us Australians are also told we have no culture. We definitely have a culture although it’s not as in your face. I feel we have similarities there. Also I hate people who litter too! I love history so happy to talk about ancestral anything!
View on Reddit #61180365

geekycurvyanddorky@reddit

Y’all Aussies definitely have culture! Some of it can be a little “loud”, but that’s true of any country. I love the wonderful similarities between both of our countries, and I love seeing how far both have come (though ours is heading backward a bit right now). History can be such a fun topic to learn about or talk about! You should visit a museum (or a few) whilst you’re out here too. If you get the chance to make it to San Diego, Balboa Park has a lot of great museums (and it’s beautiful!). Their Zoo there is great too! But it is pricey 😅

geekycurvyanddorky@reddit

There isn’t a civil war yet, but the regime is being terrible (mostly toward Latin folks/Native Americans right now. Also hopefully we won’t have a full on civil war again). Delete anything Trump or maga related from your phone before you come here (in case you get flagged by border patrol). You probably won’t be flagged though. Just honestly tell them you’re traveling, and your itinerary, and when you fly home, etc. LA is a big city, and a lot of locals there that weren’t protesting didn’t see anything change in their neighborhoods.

View on Reddit #61181276

geekycurvyanddorky@reddit

Oh, fair 😅😂 Our nationwide public broadcasting service (PBS), has documentaries about that part of history. Not all of them are very entertaining, but they do all hold a plethora of information. States have their own versions of PBS too, and narrow down the historical documentaries (and every other show), to just their areas. So northeast coastal states should have some good ones that you could search for online ☺️

Think the people who touch things in museums or can't shut up when attending a place where you should be quiet. Also, people who pretend "not to know better" or pretend to not understand because different culture or language or whatever. No, you know cutting is line is rude, I saw you eying everybody before trying to sneak in. Don't try to play dumb. Treating other people, especially service industry, hospitality, etc poorly is also shit. You're not better than anybody else. Oh, and sorry our current system is really shitty, but PLEASE tip waiters in restaurants and valets etc. WE KNOW it's terrible. Unpopular opinion: or you could not tip them, and force the employer to pay them minimum wage. If their compensation per hour does not equal minimum wage, the employer, by law, must make up the difference. That said, I still tip.

In my state (Oregon) it’s required to pay min wage before tips. I’ve always assumed it was the same in CA. (Though, I know some states allow employers to pay less if tips bring the hourly up to minimum wage)

Oh and be sure to leave $ for your hotel housekeeping staff at the end of your stay- either leave it on a table in your room or hand it to a worker directly who’s nearby. Hotel tipping rules aren’t as set in stone as other industries but I’ve heard $5 per day is common for long stays, maybe $10 total if it’s just for one night.

If people bring you your food, check in on you, and clean up after you, tip. If a bartender pours you a drink, especially once that requires mixing, and even more one that requires blending, tip. If you feel you've been given exceptional service, tip; the places where tipping isn't generally appropriate will politely decline, and you can simply say "Thank you" and be on your way. Still, if you feel you've gotten exceptional service and refused an offered tip, sing their praises to a manager. Honestly, managers always hear complaints, but praises go amazingly far. Please realize that there are differences between full service restaurants and fast food or takeout places. Takeout might deserve a tip, but fast food does not. Use your best judgement.

Yes Mrs up her own ass New Zealand tourist, if you do a currency conversion the minimum wage in Arizona is in fact higher than back home. And the cost of living is about 1/3-1/2 so the workers in Arizona make more than your prescious little people you have a mountain of compassion for. Call it "Cali" (there are parts of NorCal that say that, but it's not a thing in SoCal that I've ever heard)  Call L.A. pretty much anything other than "L.A." Smoke in non-designated areas (most cities have ordinances against smoking near windows or doors of businesses, which in a walkable area often means pretty much anywhere on the sidewalk.) Not tip the driver/server/housekeeping/etc Make fun of allergen labels Tell us your public transit is better (we know it sucks, we're trying to get it fixed, it's a long struggle)  Cross a picket line  But mostly, just be respectful of the residents and their space and don't be a jerk or an idiot and you'll be fine, usually.

Drive badly/slowly, leave trash, and create wildfires. Pull off the road if there is a line of cars behind you and let them all pass. As far as Australians go.. I haven't run into much issue with them. California is similar enough to Australia where there is a lot of similarities (like don't go hiking when it is a million degrees outside). For folks from Europe/Asia smoking can be an issue, but that seems like it has gotten better as well. If you smoke cigarettes, there might be some places where its totally normal in Australia but will get you in hot water in California (maybe not legally, but definitely socially). Drinking in public is something you should avoid, if you drink a beer at the beach there is a good chance the cops will bust you (I love our California beaches, but they are a nightmare this time of year, if I was coming from Australia I would not bother with them unless I had friends I was meeting up with). Tipping is expected in restaurants. Where in California will you be visiting?

Don’t leave anything in your car. Especially, in San Francisco, and probably LA too. Rental cars are especially targeted for theft. Your window will get smashed, and your stuff will get stolen. Between Yosemite and LA, take a moment to explore Fresno and Bakersfield if you get the chance. We're both ~4-500k communities and each place has its charms and downfalls. Still, there's a lot to be seen, and it's all right on your way. If you like country music, look to Bakersfield for the Crystal Palace right off of highway 99. It's a country music dinner theater with a country music "museum" as well. For all the "Bakersfield sucks" people, they're the ones that don't know how to get out and entertain themselves.

You're welcome. I don't know if you know about the "Bakersfield sound" but it's a twangy Western country sound that's often underscored or even highlighted by a steel guitar. Buck Owens and Merle Haggard are "from" here. Buck was actually from Texas, and Merle was a rambler, but this was still home. On your way into Bakersfield at the north end there's Merle Haggard Drive and then Buck Owens Blvd at the Crystal Palace. The Bakersfield sign is there by the palace, too, though the original location was over Union avenue just south of the intersection at California Ave. If you've ever seen Every Which Way But Loose with Clint Eastwood you can see the original sign on a foot bridge over Union.

Well a couple other driving tips then. You have to watch out for motorcyclists lane splitting in traffic. That's when they drive on the line between lanes. California is one of the only places in the world where it's explicitly legal, so it's very common. So always check for them before changing lanes. When possible Californians will drive 10+ over the speed limit on freeways as the norm. Then there's the well known one of turning right on a red light. If you're turning right, you stop, wait for the intersection to be safe to enter, and then go, even though you have a red light. You only don't do that if there's a sign or red arrow telling you no to. If you just wait for the light to turn green, you will have people honking at you thinking you're scrolling your phone or something.

FYI and you probably know this but Yosemite to LA is a solid drive (~350 miles depending where you end up in LA area). Plan on the whole day of a fairly boring drive. At least in the middle. Depending on where you are in San Francisco it can be chilly even in the summer. And in SF area 10-20 miles away from downtown SF the same day can be 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) warmer. And football politics and guns. People are weird about those things.

Drive really slowly because they're taking pictures. We know it's pretty, there's usually lookout spots you can get out to take photos. Just pull over for pictures, let all the people jammed behind you get on with their lives

Will he be driving in SF? Driving in SF is insane, especially if it’s the first time driving on the other side. I’d recommend *not* renting a car until you are ready to leave the SF. You don’t need a car in SF anyway- BART is the local bus system and it’s excellent and what everyone uses

Thanks we will have no car in SF, we will pick it up just before we leave for Tahoe

The walk of fame is boring IMO. And I can’t vouch for the other tours- but r/asklosangeles might know. Careful of driving a lot between MDR and Hollywood stuff, it can take literally hours to go from MDR to Universal, even though the map shows it’s only a few miles

Not sure how it is in your city but some places in LA cops give you shit for jaywalking, even if it’s a short distance with no cars coming and no one around. Some people say “Oh, I’d never jaywalk!” but when you’re waiting forever for a light to change, it can be tempting

ALWAYS plan for cold and hot weather. SF can be very foggy and cold, but may (or may not) warm up in the afternoon. Layering is a good idea. Traffic can be TERRIBLE during the work week. Mornings and late afternoon. Leaving SF in the morning and traveling to Tahoe would be good as you will be going against traffic (except maybe in Sacramento). Leaving Tahoe in the morning for Yosemite is good. Try to arrive in LA in the early afternoon before the commuters head out. Do not leave valuables in the car that are visible to a passerby. Put them in the trunk or under blanket. Here is a california drivers handbook so you can brush up on the laws: [dmv](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/) Use CalTrans quick map to check for accidents/traffic. [caltrans](https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/) I would recommend Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park. [knotts](https://www.knotts.com/?utm_channel=Search&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=zadv_search&utm_campaign=&utm_campaignid=&utm_adgroupid=%7D&utm_term=&utm_content=brand&&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CDFR_KBFM_SEM_STANDARD_BRAND_X&utm_term=knott%27s%20berry%20farm&utm_content=Brand%20Name&gclsrc=3p.ds&gad_source=7) AND either Medieval Times or Pirates Dinner Adventure (also in Buena Park). Have fun!!

Be sure to allow a few days at least (several is better) for each city. You’ll be driving many many hours since these cities are all very far apart and you don’t want that to be your whole trip. Also use the WAZE app for navigation. It’s more accurate than google or Apple Maps IME. Try to avoiding driving between like 5am-10am and 12pm-8pm in LA if possible…It will add many hours of driving even to your trips. I’d plan to get to your LA destination by like 5am if possible. Then just uber or Lyft around to where you want to go. That helps you avoid having to find parking too which is notoriously impossible

As a Southern Californian, please leave celebrities alone. If you are in the LA area and you see someone that makes you think “was that so and so?”- assume it was and keep going. They are trying to live their private lives and we try to let them do it. I know it’s not as cool as going home with a pic, an autograph, or a “really cool” story to share. But they’re just people and we try to treat them the same as everybody else.

This one is absolutely universal but if you go to a busy city, don't walk slowly in a huge group or stop suddenly to look up and buildings. If you're from a country that doesn't tip like the US, just do a flat 20% anywhere you get table service. Please please do not bring up tipping like its a debate. Don't do your best california surfer dude or valley girl accent, its going to be bad.

I'm not in California but one thing that gets me when we're moving our cattle from one pasture to another we have to either cross the road or we have to use the road for a couple of miles. We get the creatures that instead of giving us time to move the animals out of the way they lay on the horn and jam the gas peddle through the firewall, blowing through the herd. Putting us in danger, putting our cattle in danger, and putting themselves in danger. It happens at least once a year. We don't want to be on the road but there is no choice for several of the pastures we have to get to. Our horses are generally pretty good, but they are still unpredictable, and they can spook they could throw one of us, which that could be fatal. They could (and have) hit a cow or calf. The animal they hit depending on the vehicle could come through the wind shield, I'll leave the rest of that to your imagination. If you see ranchers moving cattle along the road give the chance to get out of the way. They'll be grateful, and everyone will be happy. Plus everyone gets to go home at the end of the day.

Don't be a scene hog. This is a term I coined (as far as I know). A "scene hog" is someone who stands in front of or blocks/spoils the view of something other people want to take pictures of. This includes people who keep posing in front of things in different poses as their partner takes numerous photos. This also includes occupying the whole width of a sidewalk for the two of you to take a photo, forcing the more considerate pedestrians to walk behind the photographer. This also also includes standing in that spot after taking the photos instead of moving away. To fix this: just hurry up and take your damn photo, then move away.

As some who lives in a quiet popular coastal town South of Sydney, where the population increases almost 10 fold during the holidays. People don't use blinkers and just stop in the middle of the road for fuck knows why. Also even though the speed limit is 50, they drive at 30. They treat our roads like they're a footpath. Just spread across the whole road. Don't look if there's cars coming, don't even acknowledge you when you're right behind them. They treat our pristine coastline like garbage and have absolutely no respect for the locals who live here.
