I am sure it has been asked before, but I recently hired a helper and he has noticed my truck preps (first aid kit, truck pouch, etc) and asked me about it and we have gotten to talking, he is interested in getting started but hasn't had the finances to actually go through with it. Are there any online sites where he can download books to read? He does live out in the country so he is excited about starting to learn knots and try some stuff in his backyard.

The Libby app has ebooks available and prepping/survival/homesteading books as well as books on cooking from scratch, sewing, first-aid and more.
Archive.org has many MANY ebooks available, many available to fully download.
There are prepper specific sites that house free ebooks such as this one and this one andthis one
There are more free sites. But it is a very long list. So start with these.

He can go get a library card if he doesn't have one and can access free ebooks on loan that way.

I don’t know of any prepper specific sources, but fadedpage.com and gutenberg.org are both repositories for public domain books. I believe one may have some useful info for prepping.
Check both, one will often have books the other doesn’t. For example, fadedpage has George Orwell books while gutenberg doesn’t, and gutenbuerg has both versions of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein while fadedpage doesn’t.

Get Kiwix and you can download the entirety of the Gutenberg library for free, also a bunch of other great resources including all of wikipedia (about 80GB with links and pictures, or 20GB without) which would be great if you lost network access for a while
Paranormal_Lemon@reddit
It's up to 110GB now

If you are going to learn from ebooks, you might as well have a few for entertainment as well. Take up barely any space on a phone or tablet and most ebook readers even on phones barely use power when that is all they are used for.
