ULPT Will I get ban from Library for downloading large files or pirated movies?

Hi everyone. So their WiFi is super fast. It feels like you will have that WiFi in 2050. I want to download many movies to watch by their WiFi because I want to save my mobile Data. Yes I don't have wifi now. Even personal WiFi is very slow for downloading stuff. I am not scared of piracy but of Library. If I use VPN will they still know what I am downloading and watching? Or they can block my WiFi or even ban me from using their services? In France. Please only with experience or someone who has done this before.
PoolMotosBowling@reddit
They prob use a web filter to block stuff like that. Pretty standard for a lot of places.
VPN should help you get around that.
nocsi@reddit
No you wont. We have people full on watching porn at my library and they can't do anything. We also have narcan in case you OD reading zoo books. Benjamin franklin intended on the library system to give people free access to information. That also includes procuring illegal software, as long as it comes in as information. I don't think you understand how many people use and depend on library's access to internet to do stuff.
If you're feeling super poor and want to do some crime. Just install keyloggers on the library computers. You'll come to learn just how many idiots are doing their banking on the public computers in the library. So yea I'm pretty sure they're not going to either care or even bother trying to get to you.
metalflygon08@reddit
The special Elephant Issue and Tiger Poster just did me in.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Do you know how to install keyloggers? I don't know what it is. Just curious
nocsi@reddit
Yea. I don't actually recommend it, said it in jest. You can do a software keylogger or a hardware one that man-in-the-middle key presses between the keyboard and the computer. You're definitely going to get voyeurism and some random other charges on you. But nobody really has the brain to do it, so there's no direct laws on it.
I have a better one. Just go to any thrift/junk store and pick up any business printer. Crack it open and find the spool containing thousands of documents containing PII, financial information, banking information. Businesses never clear around the spool in their printers before they get donated/sold. Even moreso if the company went under. And in this case, you're not doing anything malicious to obtain this since they've relinquished the property.
Better yet, take all the contents, package it up and sell it on the dark web as a dataleak pack.Pay $200 for a printer to turn it into $10000
vontwothree@reddit
Just drop a piss disc in the CD drive mate.
mordecai98@reddit
They don't all have dvd drives anymore. You can order a Piss USB disc . Just plug it in.
kalvinbastello@reddit
Probably not. Good chance they have wifi traffic throttled and priority to internal network so you don't suck all the bandwidth. But unless they are bigger and have an IT staff & or someone complains no one will ever know
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
The Library has trained librarians who provide basic IT and digital support, but no dedicated IT technicians.
waku2x@reddit
Btw not sure if it’s mention but when you torrent, the application needs to use the VPN connections
jcshay@reddit
The one thing you need to do is use a VPN. Otherwise, the ISP will be able to see which device is illegally downloading, and they may inform the library.
There are many free, ad supported VPNs now.
ThatSandwich@reddit
A VPN that supports port forwarding will allow you to take much better advantage of the bandwidth available, but I'm not aware of any free options that provide this service.
Proton seems to be the best value of the few options left.
HAYWOOD_JABL0MI@reddit
Mullvad is significantly better than proton.
ChrisWsrn@reddit
Was better before they took away port forwarding. The good news is they really don't keep logs.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Yes proton is most suggested
mordecai98@reddit
Doesn't work for torrenting afaik
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Proton? What if I just use for downloading from Telegram?
InadequateUsername@reddit
Proton works for torrents, it probably will not work for Netflix and other legitimate streaming services.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
It still changes the IP address
InadequateUsername@reddit
Yes it will change your IP address, more importantly it will encrypt your traffic.
The library doesn't care what you're using their internet for so long as you're not making terroristic threats, watching porn, or exploiting children. In fact they really want you to use their wifi, they count that in their statistics and it goes towards justifying their funding.
This is what Library wifi is there for, and the fact that you're lucky enough that their WiFi is very good is fantastic.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Yeah. Probably 100 people come everyday and idk what kind of shit they do on their computers. I don't think they really care unless I'm exploiting their WiFi and using it for illegal stuff like hacking, child corn, phishing or scamming etc.
InadequateUsername@reddit
Exactly, you're good
inhalingsounds@reddit
What do you mean? It has port forwarding, it should work like any other VPN.
ButterscotchOne4432@reddit
This removes the anonymity from pirating elsewhere and ties it all back to you
MayorOfPantstown@reddit
I feel like D*sney or Param0unt could file suits that would make things hard for the library. Do it at St#rbucks. Libraries are under enough strain without having to take your heat.
TheIronSoldier2@reddit
Why in the name of everything that is holy do you censor fucking Starbucks
michael-clarke@reddit
Don't want big coffee knowing we're planning a take down
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
What if I use only Telegram with a VPN? I've been downloading from Telegram since 2019-2020 never had any issue
MayorOfPantstown@reddit
Yeah, dude, VPN should keep the library out of trouble.
jamesgoodfella@reddit
Or use a seed box, install the torrent software there then just download the files from your seed box. Internet won’t see that you’ve been torrenting. Simply downloading files from a server
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
I don't want to Torrent directly. It's better to download it from Telegram or other non torrent apps. Because there they can't really see what I am doing and probably even anti-piracy institutions can't see.
jamesgoodfella@reddit
So the seed box itself does the “naughty” stuff for you. You merely access the seedbox (I use ultra.cc and installed qtorrent or deluge) take a look online because I’m certain this is the solution you’re looking for.
The seedbox will download the torrents really fast to the server, then you can just download the files (not torrents, as that was done by a server so you technically didn’t do anything wrong)
The isp will only see a file downloaded rather than a torrent downloaded :)
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
How do you do this on mobile? Or I can do this on library computer then transfer to my mobile?
jamesgoodfella@reddit
Yeah I use it on mobile and it works really good
ReyxDD@reddit
VPN + RealDebrid
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
What if I use only Telegram with a VPN? I've been downloading from Telegram since 2019-2020 never had any issue
ReyxDD@reddit
If it's direct download should be fine maybe. If it's a torrent file then better to convert it to a direct download with Real Debrid.
Blu_eyes_wite_dagon@reddit
Nobody cares what you're doing as long as you're not watching porn or being disruptive. When I worked at the library, people would spend all day every day ripping cd's and dvd's to their laptop. As long as they checked the material out first, we didn't care.
kerodon@reddit
Idk about for France but in America you're fine as long as you don't torrent it because reuploading is the problematic part. Downloading is not. But I'm not French soo
AlexV348@reddit
You probably don't need a VPN for direct downloading, if you're using https. The ISP and the library can see which TLDs you are accessing, but they won't know which specific pages on those TLDs you are accessing or which files you are downloading. The library may block specific piracy sites, so that could be an issue, but it's unlikely they can block all of them.
You should get a VPN if you want to torrent, the ISP will be able to see which torrent you are connected to/seeding.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
What if I use only Telegram with a VPN? I've been downloading from Telegram since 2019-2020 never had any issue
pichael288@reddit
There is a very good chance the library will be notified if you download something that's still making money (like a big budget movie, or one still in theaters). I've gotten letters before, and have had my internet temporarily disabled and had to open a browser and click I acknowledged this was happening and I would put a stop to it before I was able to connect again.
Now I'm not sure if downloading it is the issue, or if it's seeding that's the issue. Been a while but I remember you couldn't download it without also seeding the progress you've made, you could only stop seeding it after it was complete. I could be wrong though. Hell I'm not even sure where you would find the torrents to download stuff anymore, like is pirate bay still a thing?
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
I have an app that gives you almost all movies available. I don't know if it's still in torrent category but it's not torrent in a traditional way. I'm more scared of Library than having any legal issues which is very low risk. I used to downloading a movie everyday through Telegram mostly back in 2020-23. Now I have some apps and websites which are good too. Is it still Torrent?
Gimme_Your_Wallet@reddit
It is. Google RealDebrid. It has its own sub on Reddit.
dahanger@reddit
Came to say this. Coupled with Stremio and I'm in streaming heaven rn.
TwoMoreMinutes@reddit
Honestly just do it with or without a VPN, no one will know or care, it would be basically impossible for you to be identified and prove what you’d been doing or watching anyway given the number of people who would come and go from a public library on any given day
They wouldn’t be able to block your WiFi access unless you have to use a specific account to access it but even then I highly doubt they’d care
The WiFi is there to be used after all and it’s not like data transfer is some kind of limited comodity
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
But I have to put my id there. Maybe through this they can identify who is doing what. Not sure
Peannut@reddit
Yup then they can find you
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
To make sure Not my Personal ID but the Library ID.
YnotBbrave@reddit
Almost true. They can ban the MAC address of the phone but they can't id you
CouchPotatophile@reddit
Depends how the network is configured. There could require a login linked to your library account.
CouchPotatophile@reddit
A VPN will block everyone from seeing what you’re doing (both the library and anyone else monitoring download services for piracy). I would recommend a good paid VPN. The cheap ones are generally crap. The library can still see how much bandwidth you’re using and may have an issue with it (depending on how they monitor and their policies) but I’d guess the worst they’ll do is cut you off or throttle you.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
But I have to put my id there. Maybe through this they can identify who is doing what. Not sure. Is proton good?
CouchPotatophile@reddit
Put your ID where? Login to the Wi-Fi? Even so, with a VNP they’ll be able to see the bandwidth associated with your account but not what you’re doing. They won’t be able to prove anything.
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Not my Personal ID but the Library ID.
Dry_Till_3933@reddit
Doesn’t the library have DVD’s of movies too?
dingdong008@reddit (OP)
Yes they do have DVDs. Mostly old movies. But I want to watch Netflix yk
