Is the entirety of this game a testament to Japanese incompetence?

The_Freshmaker@reddit
yeah the lore reason is it's a fucking video game you nonce.
Supershadow30@reddit
They’re almost all wearing gloves. Anon is slow
Carti_Barti9_13@reddit (OP)
Not IRL
DRazzyo@reddit
Even if you pulled prints off of a calling card, for all you know, it could be prints from someone who was paid to bring it to the target. Or a random post worker.
It would not be definitive enough to go beyond an informational conversation between police and one of the kids, and that is bad optics already for police. It also depends on whether some of the phantom thieves were even fingerprinted. MC might be, given that he was a tried 'criminal' but the rest probably wouldn't be, so no database to pull from.
kentaxas@reddit
Even if the police find Ren's fingerprints and bring him in for questioning he can just say he doesn't remember anything. With all the sudden personality changes and people having blackouts going on they would probably buy it
DRazzyo@reddit
Eh, more that it wouldn't fit the pattern of the crime.
Ren was tried for assault. Changing hearts/forcing confessions/blackmail, wouldn't be his MO. Which is why the police don't really acknowledge him as a suspect, although they're aware of his past/know that Kamoshida had it out for him during their questioning of the student body.
0oozymandias@reddit
Wouldn't this theory fall apart once the police finds their fingerprints on multiple cards instead of one
knightshade179@reddit
This theory falls apart once you realize fingerprints are a lead and then they can do surveillance on suspects in order to find evidence.
DRazzyo@reddit
That’s assuming all cards are made by the same people. And it’s also assuming that they aren’t using gloves. I could see the first card not having that, but the first card was also the least impactful, and has been thrown out/disposed of by the time the police come around.
Kel4597@reddit
This is silly. A person commits one crime so it’s illogical to think that they’d commit another type of crime?
DRazzyo@reddit
Criminals usually reoffend by doing similar crimes as their original. Blackmail is a departure from simple assault.
Kel4597@reddit
Criminality is way more complex than that. Fixating on the charges ignores why the crime was committed in the first place and the fact that certain crimes just kind of go together. Nevermind that your investigation should be evidence-based, not suspect-based. Joker isn’t a suspect because there’s no evidence suggesting that he is. A prior conviction is not evidence.
Joker doesn’t have an MO. He has a single assault conviction which is presumably his only criminal charge on record. Modus operandi is how someone does a particular thing. Assault is not an MO. Assault with a baseball bat to the back of the head is. You need multiple crimes with a clear pattern to establish an MO. I kind of feel like you get a lot of your knowledge about this topic from TV shows and true crime podcasts.
Smol-Fren-Boi@reddit
That and it would be headline fucking news that the cops are trying to pin blame on a kid
IrregularrAF@reddit
Pretty sure you can be reasonably detained indefinitely if the prints match.
EngineStraight@reddit
gloves
Carti_Barti9_13@reddit (OP)
Ryuji wasn’t wearing any
bastardasss@reddit
He does
Snekbites@reddit
It was on a hallway in school, more than one person might've touched it out of curiosity, the rest were delivered more carefully.
wowSoFresh@reddit
Wut?
Carti_Barti9_13@reddit (OP)
Did you play the game? The calling card is put irl
HypnotizedCow@reddit
After the museum, it's said that Morgana left the calling card at the exhibit. If they wiped them after making them and Morgana plants them, there wouldn't be any prints
Carti_Barti9_13@reddit (OP)
Except they don’t wipe them, and Ryuji still did it in the first one
wowSoFresh@reddit
Literal wizardry
EngineStraight@reddit
im fucking doomed
SpaceBug176@reddit
I will be personally sending you to hell.
Carti_Barti9_13@reddit (OP)
Allah will be kind to you inchallah
ImmaFukinDragon@reddit
After binging cop shows just now, here are the actual facts;
The protagonist's fingerprints are already on file, but he never physically touches the calling cards.
Even if they get the fingerprints, acquiring the suspect would require taking the fingerprints off of every single student, that's way too many resources to use.
There could definitely have been eye-witnesses, the thieves definitely got lucky the first few times around. How the fuck did Ryuji post it all over the school like that and not get caught?
The first few times could also be attributed to misdemeanor or delinquent behavior, Ryuji definitely fit the bill, and they get a slap on the wrist really.
There are only 2 instances where shit could have been nipped in the bud. Gym teacher and fraud artist. Gym teacher can't take it seriously, fraud artist's assistant also touched the card and did not take it seriously either.
Other, certain, instances could have been turned into the police, but without a proper scope (cops didn't know it was high school students to begin with) they wouldn't find a fingerprint match.
And you can't use full departmental resources to take fingerprints off of every high schooler and their teachers based off of circumstantial evidence (gym teacher was the first), it's bad press and practice and a gigantic waste.
NotMorganSlavewoman@reddit
There's also the part where they aren't doing anything provable besides sending the card which can be considered a harmless prank. Police can't get evidence that they go to a Mind Palace, and the victim doesn't know who did it or what they did.
NotMorganSlavewoman@reddit
Ok, they get caught, but there's nothing beyond them sending what amounts to a prank as police can't get proof on how they affect the people's hearts.
darkcomet222@reddit
Doesn’t Morgana assist in delivering them, so they would just keep finding cat stuff.
UristMcMagma@reddit
Morgana is not a cat!
MisterGoo@reddit
You don’t need to be a smart thief when the police inspector is genuinely thinking you must have had help to come up with the design of the cards/learn how to jump/read newspapers/play the piano/eat with your mouth closed.
The interrogation sections were painfully dumb.
MyDogIsDaBest@reddit
Anime logic.
julysniperx@reddit
Yeah jp police dumb as hell, this isn't detective conan anon. They are so bored they just traffic stop random gaijins for shit and giggles.
ionevenobro@reddit
Prints have to be matched to someone already in the system.
hyperblob1@reddit
the cat delivers them 90% of the time
GoatRocketeer@reddit
I know there's all those famous historical cases of the JP justice system being insanely lenient with minors. It could just be coincidence and there's not a systemic lenience, but otherwise that could help.
mixergrass@reddit
I'm pretty sure their pet cat takes care of it. Can't take fingerprints off a cat I'm afraid.
ProShyGuy@reddit
Pulling fingerprints is only helpful if you have matching fingerprints in your system.
Joker's fingerprints would 100% be in the systems because he'd previously been arrested and convicted.
However, none of the other Phantom Thieves had been arrested. As such, getting their prints wouldn't be helpful.
Smol-Fren-Boi@reddit
That and you dont physically leave it, so theyd need to catch you actually doing the crime
Brokedownbad@reddit
For one, the fingerprints would need to already be in the system to do anything with that information.
IrregularrAF@reddit
Get the prints on file and print suspects.
Brokedownbad@reddit
That still means that you'd need to find a suspect with prints that match. That means that you catch someone doing a crime, print them, and it happens to match. It's a game of chance. They do it IRL, but assuming the Phantom Theives don't get caught, the prints mean nothing.
IrregularrAF@reddit
The justice system in every country is well know for overstepping their boundaries. You can be a suspect on a whim. If you want to argue it, you can. But that's a long waiting process and sometimes the people who are supposed to protect you from this are either flooded with work or don't care.
Brokedownbad@reddit
That's not what I mean. The Phantom Thieves leave no record or trace of their existence, there's nothing tying them to the crime. The police can search as much as they want, but the odds of catching one and fingerprinting them, thus tying them to the crime, would take ages. The police don't have any clue WHO the theives are, so it's literally a waiting game. Modern police has this happen all the time. They just put the print in the system and flag it as a suspect, and they have to wait until they print someone with a match. If the Phantom Thieves don't get arrested, then nobody with a matching print will be found.
Smol-Fren-Boi@reddit
This. The cops can technically do anything but realistically they cant do shit
SoupaMayo@reddit
I dont know man, without criminal records you cant really know who's fingerprints they are
redditusero_o@reddit
But your character quite literally has a criminal record
amazegamer64@reddit
The game clearly established that the MC didn’t personally send calling cards to any of the targets
