Historical wars before modern record keeping don’t have reliable counts for combatants or casualties. Chroniclers just added zeros to everything for the vibes. All victories were crushing and loses were devastating.
Okay. Here’s one. The Tate-Labianca killings by the Charles Manson family could have been prevented by the CIA but they thought he was going to attack the black panthers to start the race war so they let him run wild and he changed up the target at the last second.
We didn't evolve for that either. We're specialized for a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Did you know that some archeological digsites, specifically that 9000 year old bog-graveyard in florida, indicate that it wasn't unusual for pre-agriculture humans to reach 70 or more years old.
Our lifespan dropped drastically with the discovery of agriculture and only began to rise again thanks to modern medicine.
Probably. Though I imagine child mortality between pre and post agriculture societies was pretty similar.
I think the deciding difference between the two comes down to cities and plagues. Many cities weren't able to maintain their populations without constant migration from the countryside. Plagues were just that constant of an issue.
If you made it past the age of 20 and avoided both the cities and the backbreaking labor that is subsistence farming, you probably had a pretty decent chance of making it to 70 as well.
But organized warfare only started when civilizations popped up. Before that, yeah we employed violence, and sometimes against other humans. But it wasn't even close to levels we see after the invention of agriculture.
Again, universal culture. Another human will never bend to your will or authority unless you demonstrate the capacity to inflict consequence, and consequence is nothing if its a light slap on the wrist.
Back then one of the only ways to enforce your power was to take it from other people who held similar power. The only way to keep other people with power from taking your power is killing them so they will never threaten your power.
It's the impersonality of it all that causes PTSD. In a proper world we'd be killing Joe in the next town over because he killed our dad, because our dad killed his dad, etc.
Anon had no one to blame but hims lf. He could have gotten tuition assistance while he was in and completed a degree. After, grad school with the GI Bill. If he was allowed to live off post, he could have bought a house with a VA loan.
Would recommend not to watch for entertainment. Rather like listening to a vet at a bar. That's what it is.
Make sure not to watch the cut down version. I didnt realize it was a thing until a rewatch. It really breaks the pacing not allowing you to take it seriously with understanding.
At the very least anon is still alive, I've heard American servicemen often struggle financially, physically and mentally after they get out, which is quite sad and a shame that nothing seems to be done for them even after giving their life to their country.

We all struggle when we get out anon. A year ago I was jumping out of planes and blowing shit up, and now Im banging anons mom.
Keep your head up

It’s genuinely difficult as a supporting member of the US military.
One day your fucking the lonely military wives and keeping them company, the next day their husbands come back and your deployment is over
How am I supposed to fit back into society?

Not at this scale and with these kinds of tools.
KapitanKaczor@reddit
Tf you mean not at this scale? Look at wars in China, multiple of them reach millions of casualties

Bro the Taiping rebellion was 140 years ago. Safe to say those numbers were probably a bit more solid.
mergelong@reddit
It depends, as with everything in history and historiography, on how reliable a source is
If an empire has good book-keeping and a lot of surviving records you can reconstruct a pretty accurate order of battle
If the primary source for a battle comes from a guy writing a chronology 153 years after the fact, probably not
WhoTheHeckKnowsWhy@reddit
the first ones of that scale were almost 2,500 years ago. We wouldn't see war at that scale again till the Napoleonic Wars.
