It depends, as with everything in history and historiography, on how reliable a source is
If an empire has good book-keeping and a lot of surviving records you can reconstruct a pretty accurate order of battle
If the primary source for a battle comes from a guy writing a chronology 153 years after the fact, probably not

Our lifespan dropped drastically with the discovery of agriculture and only began to rise again thanks to modern medicine.

Probably. Though I imagine child mortality between pre and post agriculture societies was pretty similar.
I think the deciding difference between the two comes down to cities and plagues. Many cities weren't able to maintain their populations without constant migration from the countryside. Plagues were just that constant of an issue.
If you made it past the age of 20 and avoided both the cities and the backbreaking labor that is subsistence farming, you probably had a pretty decent chance of making it to 70 as well.
