Nope an ATX board will not fit don't even try it
dillingerdiedforyou@reddit
I love your Wang.
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
I'll update everyone about how I'm juicing my Wang in the future weeks..
mschnittman@reddit
My older brother had a Wang word processor in his NYU laboratory back in the early 80s that I used to play with. It was the first microcomputer-like device that I ever used. I used to play the Wumpus game on it every chance I got. Good memories.
G-I-T-M-E@reddit
I‘m sure wife would appreciate it.
LisiasT@reddit
Yeah, this is what I had said to myself last time I had one... :P
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
Don't have one, so I'm free to play with my Wang all day and all night..
-jp-@reddit
You can actually do that when you’re married too, just not in the living room.
baubaugo@reddit
Coward!
rantingathome@reddit
Nah... sometimes in the living room if the spouse is game. If you're really lucky, she'll bring one of her friends.

I'd like to reduce how much I modify this Wang.. I'm thinking of going AT with a Slot 1 or Socket 7... While ATX might be cool, it would require extensive cutting of the case for rear I/O, and I'd like to avoid that and keep the case pure.
gcc-O2@reddit
Interesting that the rear I/O area seems like a spiritual ancestor to ATX as it is
tomxp411@reddit
Yeah, lots of brand name computers at the time had most of their I/O on the motherboard, to reduce costs. That makes it extra challenging when upgrading, however, since you can't just throw a new motherboard in the case.
In this case, OP can probably just drill some new holes for standoffs and use the AT motherboard.
They might be able to get away with an ATX board, if they can find the right one, but that seems unlikely.
gcc-O2@reddit
Yeah, I'm just used to seeing an i/o area like that on an LPX card with a riser for the expansion cards, as opposed to a modified AT design like this
tomxp411@reddit
I've seen that, too, especially on low-profile machines.
One of my early PCs was a Leading Edge XT, and it had a similar deal, with standard fence post slots and cutouts for the I/O ports.
I actually found one on EBay - that's making me nostalgic:

Fine-Funny6956@reddit
Don’t drill holes in your Wang like this guy says. If you don’t take precautions, it may never work the same again. I would say use some high temperature epoxy or Velcro to be safer.
canthearu_ack@reddit
It really is a huge Wang!
(just to confuse people who look through my comment history without looking at context!)
DogWallop@reddit
My own dad had a huge Wang. The law firm he worked for was holding on to an old, outdated Wang minicomputer system. My dad had asked the IT manager if they could write the simplest little program which would help him keep track of when trust became due, but was told it would be impossible, blah blah blah.
So dad got ahold of monster of a Wang PC, a huge metal box that was a DOS-only PC compatible, on which he loaded Lotus 1-2-3 and created the program himself. A completely different beast from the one you have here though lol.
As for the ones you have I do remember there were some much higher-quality compatibles produced which were very nice actually, but they later on did as so many large corporations did trying to get in on the cheaper commoditized PC market and go really downmarket with near-junk.
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
From the little information I can find, the base PC382 sold for $7,220USD in 1989
DogWallop@reddit
If that's what it sold for in the US it would have cost at least double that here in the Much Vex'd Bermooths, which is scary to contemplate lol.
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
The cost taking into account for inflation is insane..
DogWallop@reddit
Exactly. I don't know how much we would have charged for one of these in reality, as they probably would have been included in the price of a whole system, if we'd actually sold any. But by the time I got there in the late 80s Wang was a brand on the wane. Oddly, I'd seen that downfall firsthand almost as I'd been living in Lowell, MA for several years prior to returning to Bermuda.
The only reason there was a Wang dealership still extant in Bermuda and with that particular law firm as a client was that one of the founding partners of the firm was a major shareholder.
Fine-Funny6956@reddit
So you’re saying that they jerked him around by his Wang?
Lectraplayer@reddit
Not really.

Don't stick it in any SCSI ports. Or if you do, at least run an antivirus scan first.
jewellman100@reddit
You'll get your Wang all SCSI
LocalH@reddit
Fun fact: SCSI was intended to be pronounced "sexy"

I member that. In University, learning about SCSI for the first time 29 years ago, the professor talking "sexy" to his Small Systems students.

Wow that is an awesome setup! What model is it? Or what specs? I need to find a wang for myself now, I never thought this day would come!
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
It would have originally been a 386 of some sort..
Fine-Funny6956@reddit
That is a beautiful smooth white wang. Are you going to use your wang or just sit on your wang?
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
Kind of a more grey Wang...oh I definitely plan on putting the wang through its paces daily
SpeedyBubble42@reddit
I'm pretty sure it will involve a dongle.
Lectraplayer@reddit
Wang Pentium 2? Will it run Unreal?
...but seriously, I did not know Wang went to that time.
Never mind. Scratch that. Looks like somebody has been upgrading it and got their money's worth out of it. It's still in very good shape though.
PuzzleheadedSweet145@reddit
I wish my Wang was huge! 😎
KrunchyPhrog@reddit
The original Wang PC 382 was a 80386, usually with a second 5.25" floppy drive along with a 3.5" floppy. If you also have other 1980s PCs, you can add a 5.25" floppy drive. Every Wang should have a LARGE HARD drive and lots of *RAM* for your Wang!
Name your huge Wang "Wango Tango" and celebrate those 1980s by listening to these two 1980s classics while having fun tonight with your Wang! The 1980s was the Decade of the Wang!

A lot of people in the 80s inadvertently shrunk their Wang, but I prefer an unmodded Wang, especially when dealing with these larger boxes. A big Wang deserves an equally sized box!

😏 I can think of something to do: Walk up to a that one vintage computer geek you like, and just say: Hey, wanna see my WANG?
2raysdiver@reddit
Must... not... comment...
itstanktime@reddit
From a fellow wang holder, do an at build. They can hold massive motherboards. Do you have the original power supply?
aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately not, it was a trash pick a while ago and I'm just getting round to prepping it for a project. I would say I will do an AT build. All I have spare in that form factor is Baby AT XT class 8088, Socket 7 and the Slot 1. All look comically small in that case, but I guess that's part of the amusement.
drhoads@reddit
Thanks for the unsolicited Wang pics in my feed. Blocked.

Play numberwang?
What is a numberwang?
Numberwang is a recurring sketch in Series 1 and 2 of That Mitchell and Webb Look. It is a fictional television series in which the two contestants call out seemingly random numbers which are occasionally told to be Numberwang. Each episode varies slightly, with the basic format remaining each time.
Lost_Balloon_@reddit
Time to rotate the board!
JudasFace@reddit
Someone gets it...Thank you!!
Lost_Balloon_@reddit
That's Numberwang!
Lost_Balloon_@reddit
That looks like a powerful Wang.

Just use it! My girlfriend in highschool had a small Wang, it was fun... Seriously she did, it ran some odd UI like Windows 3 but not Windows. We joked all the time about me going to her room to play with her Wang

See where it fits, I guess.

I wanna know how you got the sub to allow you to put "Wang" in the title. I have tried many times and it seems to never get approved.
Nice Wang, btw.

aussiepunkrocksV2-0@reddit (OP)
Yes the Pentium III SECC cards were retrieved from ewaste after they scrapped the coolers for their metal value. I found that GPU coolers were a good fit (I have another post about it)
RetinaJunkie@reddit
I wanna Wang 😁
Cwc2413@reddit
You should wang Chung tonight.
sparrow_42@reddit
My high school physics/algebra teacher would occasionally say "Yeah I can't wait to go home and play with my Wang" and then carry on like he didn't know.
TygerTung@reddit
I'd go for a motherboard with an ISA card so you can play does games with a sound blaster.
Dunge0nMast0r@reddit
Does it still fire up?
majestic_ubertrout@reddit
I'd enjoy the wang you have rather than try to perform surgery which may make it run harder but will have side effects.
i1045@reddit
Be careful where you stick your Wang. (Ventilation is important)
DeadSkullz627@reddit
Play with your Wang 😝
Limn0@reddit
You could fit some wings. To each Wangwing apply decals. Have it say something like Wangforce One. Would make a nice case.
Fdisk_format@reddit
Wang Chung tonight !
smallduck@reddit
A nice problem to have.
shadowkoishi93@reddit
Did you play with your wang yet and see what it can do?
SilverDem0n@reddit
Your huge Wang would benefit from upgrading from 3.5" to 5.25"
I know some people would say the smaller package packs more in, but some people demand bigger size - even if it's a bit less stiff.
chiclet_fanboi@reddit
I like your Wang a lot. All the best to get it up and working again!
virtualadept@reddit
Well, you did just put it on display for all of us to see... /j
kpikid3@reddit
Don't get it trapped.
Felim_Doyle@reddit
I'd preserve it as it is. It looks like it was ahead of its time.
jefbenet@reddit
That’s a really clean wang you have there
canthearu_ack@reddit
You can probably fit one of the earlier Pentium-II/III motherboards in it. A lot of these are very shallow ATX designs so might fit into the motherboard space given.
canthearu_ack@reddit
Ah, it looked like ATX case size and dimensions to me. My bad.
forsakenchickenwing@reddit
PCI and ISA (16-bit, even!).
Those were the days. We also had this brief period with AGP video cards.
