Corporate Flight Department Toxicity

Does anyone have any stories about toxic people making your life miserable? Please share. I've about had it and am considering moving on after 10 years of service.

I'm referring to procedural non compliance, changing the rules, not knowing the proper call outs on approaches, modifying run up procedures, doing them wrong, half ass cockpit setups...etc. If you call them out on it they get pissed and snap. Boss won't do anything about it.

Welcome to 91/135. It’s been as you described forever, that’s not toxic, it’s just life. If you want standardization, this isn’t the place to find it.

Yeah, back when I was flying King Airs we got a new boss. After a few weeks he held a meeting to discuss how we were doing things. Everything from uniforms, office duties, standard callouts and procedures, and even checklist usage came up. He didn’t want us using slang or doing our own thing with the checklist. Hey, that’s fair, we all agreed. About an hour later we had a flight and the very first god damned thing he does is start using nonstandard checklist call outs. I still remember holding the paper checklist when he starts with “I’ve got 2 up, 2 down, lights, Ice and bleed air.” I’m looking at the checklist and just say “I have no idea what any of that means.” To his credit he went back and said it properly, more or less (at least I could follow along somewhat with the checklist). I did get a talking to about how I could have handled,ed that in a more professional way.

Why do you need someone else to validate your misery? If you're not happy, leave. If you've been with that one department for 10 years you've got the hours to go almost anywhere.
91/135 to 121 is a one way street for a reason ya know.
RemarkableScarcity8@reddit
Except it’s impossible to go 121 with 135 time, ask how I know.
x4457@reddit
It absolutely is not. Be patient.

Legacy? I can’t get a phone call from a regional.
x4457@reddit
Yes, which is my point. If these people can get hired at legacies with just 91/135 time, a regional is well within reach.
RemarkableScarcity8@reddit
You’re tellin me. I should’ve never went my separate ways from the regional offer when I was a cfi to make a little extra money flying a plane I can’t in. Now my career is set back atleast a decade as I try to win that CJO back
x4457@reddit
Unless this event occurred 9 years and 6 months ago, no it isn't.
duaIinput@reddit
Haha what? Tons of people in my classes from regional to legacy had nothing but 91/135 time and seemed like great people.

This. If you're unhappy with your job, leave. Plain and simple.

You're my favorite

I've been flying for a long time and am not looking for validation. I was simply asking if anyone else has to deal with it.

Please post where you are so I know not to apply there.

Guess I'm fortunate that the two I've worked for have had excellent culture and great people. Yanked a coworker out of China when his wife had a medical episode. Kicked a different one off the plane and delayed the principal by an hour when his father died. It's not hard to take care of your people. Some places just don't. The ones that do fortunately don't have to hire as often.

When Randall Stephenson became CEO of AT&T, he wanted to move the headquarters from San Antonio to Dallas so it can be closer to Oklahoma, where he is from.
They sold all of but one of their jets and laid off most of their pilots to get the $80 million or so they needed to fund the move.
