Make up wearers of the UK- has anyone got any information about make up trials?

I've noticed that as I get older, my old tried and tested make up routine doesn't seem to suit my skin as much.
I'd like to know what sort of make up is better for my skin and when having a look around online, I can see John Lewis etc offer make up trials but they seem to be stuff like make up for weddings.
Can anyone recommend a consultation where I could see what every day make up I should be wearing, rather than for a specific occasion?

The Mac shop lady did some samples on me for free, been very happy with the products from there. Also changed up moisturiser and it had a massive effect! Clinique all the way.

I had this recently and went to a Clinique skincare consultation as I thought maybe I needed to change my skincare as well as my makeup. It was RUBBISH, so I’d also recommend online or even book with an MUA to get intel!

Do you have a Flannels store near you? My friend had the same dilemma recently & had a really good consultation & make up trial at the MAC counter in flannels.

I totally get what you mean sometimes over time, the same foundation or concealer just doesn’t feel right anymore.
Have you tried doing a home skin test kit? Not makeup trials, but like a hormone or vitamin level check sometimes skin dryness or texture issues are linked to those. I did one a few months ago and turns out I was low on Vitamin D. Since adjusting that, even my makeup started sitting better.
Just a thought if you’ve already tried the product side of things!

I do have a vitamin D deficiency, so this makes sense!

Yeah that makes a lot of sense! Low vitamin D can really mess with your skin and even your mood sometimes. I started taking some supplements a while back and honestly noticed a big difference in how my makeup goes on. Are you taking anything for it at the moment?

A lot of MUAs that do weddings also offer make up lessons too that would help you improve techniques and understand what types of products to use. Have a look at any local MUAs near you

You could try r/MakeUpAddictionUK and r/SkincareAddictionUK for basic advice and where to go.
(Last time I popped into Boots for skincare shade advice, I took one look at the orange-faced-with-brown-streaks young woman behind the counter and changed my mind.)

Thanks for the recommendation!

I use the Avon range of makeup and skincare, it says eyeshadow for mature skin and the lipstick for mature skin is very good, their instant lift eye serum is spectacular!

Thanks for the recommendation!

r/MakeupAddiction might be able to help! If you search for mature skin in the subreddit there should be recommendations.

Thank you! Although internally crying on searching mature make up in my 30s haha

Aww no! You are still young. Ageing is a privilege! So many people don’t get to do it. Embrace it!

I’d just YouTube it. There’s lots of makeup artists who discuss product types and options at length for people at different ages. You’ll maybe get more out of it than a consultation at a counter as they’ll be focused on selling you specific products, and when I’ve gone to get makeup done professionally they’ve never really had a focus on explaining the technique or products to you.
Sam Chapman is very good and has a lot of videos on makeup looks for 40+ age brackets.
Also trends around makeup have changed quite a lot in the past 5-10 years, so it might be worth looking at that a little bit as, if you’ve had the same makeup routine for quite a while, an element to this might just be that it feels dated by comparison to what’s currently popular.
There’s also quite a large subreddit for makeup where people can give advice. It can be a bit hit or miss with what you get back, though.

Good advice, thanks!
