What is happening in Microsoft is a strategy of trying to prove to their investors and customers that AI can be used to cut headcount in a vain attempt to keep their stock collapsing.
It's not so much a signal of what is to come for other companies as it is a reflection of the *same* interest rate pressures other companies are facing compounded by their desire to profit from it.
From what glimpses I've seen about what is going on inside, it looks like it's triggering an internal meltdown more than it is trailblazing the future.

Ideally, but it may be too late for that. The US auto industry stagnated for decades after vertically integrating itself to the max and pursuing a layoff frenzy like FAANG are doing. The only companies that were able to take advantage of the stagnation for decades came from Asia.
