How many mouldy grapes would there have to be in a 500g punnet to make you want to return them?

There was just one mouldy grape in the punnet this morning, so that was roughly 0.5% of the purchase, and not worth worrying about. But would 5% be intolerable?

I’ve never bought moldy grapes

This is similar to the corpse:water ratio question.
There are loads of corpses in the sea, but I would happily swim in the sea.
If there was a corpse in a swimming pool, I wouldn't swim in that swimming pool.
So I, and everyone else, have a sliding scale of an acceptable corpse:water ratio.

Big up to you for formulating time in your life for things like returning grapes, you're killing it!

Not worth the diesel to drive back for £2 of grapes. I'd just check more carefully next time or buy them elsewhere.
West_Category_4634@reddit
It's irrelevant. I check my grapes before buying them and accept whatever condition I bought them it.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I'd check and not buy them in the first place as really can't be arsed remembering to take them back and have a discussion with them about a £2 punnet of grapes. It would need to be maybe a quarter with the rest barely recoverable. Tip - if grapes do seem a bit on their way out, freeze them. They are delicious little snacks straight from the freezer or pop them into drinks as ice cubes.

One! Presumably you can see the mould on the grape, therefore the mould is in the miniature greenhouse containing the other grapes, therefore they're all contaminated with mould spores.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Seems like a lot of effort to return them rather than pick it off and give the rest a rinse tbh.
Martipar@reddit
Of course all grapes are mouldy, that's what the "bloom" is, however a slight bit of skin damage can cause the yeast, for that's what it is, to grow further. You can see how the discovery of wine was hardly the most difficult discovery in history.
weedbearsandpie@reddit
There is no amount of mouldy grapes that would make me drive back to the shop and deal with asking for another punnet.

When life gives you mouldy grapes, make whine.

3.675% I think is a reasonable threshold
Mail-Malone@reddit
The question can’t be answered without knowing how long you have had them.
FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
If it was just one, then I would wash the others under the tap (to get as many spores off as possible) and eat them sooner rather than later.
Mould happens, it's a natural part of fruit - the mould spores settle on the fruit while they're growing out there in the open air. I just don't want a lot of mouldy fruit because it spreads faster to other fruit I have in the house.
True-Abalone-3380@reddit
Depending how bad it all looks, less that half a dozen I just pick them out and wash the rest. Any more than than, or any large furry patches, I tend to dump the lot.
Lobotomy-in-Tesco@reddit
I would not bother usually as the shops are quite far away, but if it's convenient or necessary for you most supermarkets have generous return (and exchange) policies in such cases.
I have worked in a supermarket for a long time and I have never judged someone for not buying something which is damaged or impaired, nor for returning something when it's not to their standards. I think the goodwill from accepting such returns is infinitely more valuable than what a shop would have to gain from not allowing you to return some mouldy grapes.
alrighttreacle11@reddit
I wouldn't bother i would just not buy them again
Boring_Catlover@reddit
Yeah or if they are normally fine I'd just take it as a reminder to check more carefully in future
knight-under-stars@reddit
If I'm in store I check (where possible) all fruit, veg and meat before buying.
If I am having a delivery then I check it as I'm unloading.
Anything untoward I'm not paying for.
Sea-Still5427@reddit
They're in a clear plastic container or bag. I look before I buy, so I probably wouldn't unless it's hidden from view so you couldn't have seen it when you bought it.
Plot-3A@reddit
How close to the shop am I? If I am still in the shop then a single mouldy grape. If I've made it home then I'll take it as a lesson to inspect produce better or not to purchase grapes from that shop again.
