hello!!! i’m posting here because me & my mom have no idea how cars work (>_>)
the car is a 2001 honda accord , the break lights are staying on even though the car is off. we’ve tried to turn it on, moving the car, etc. the lights are original and we got the breaks changed last year. the lights only started acting up today, i’m not sure what could be wrong with it? :((

Did u try turning the light switch on and off . Most cars have a switch for headlights . And during the day auto running lights ..
If u can't figure it out . U shld prob go by a dealership before your battery dies out

This is correct, everyone else is being silly. You can use a pushpin from elsewhere in your car temporarily.

Make sure it even is the brake lights, not the little switch on top of the steering column for park lights.

Most likely the sensor on the brake pedal has stopped working, so the car falsely thinks you are pressing the brake at all times. Sometimes called a Brake Pedal Position Switch.
Get your head down near the pedals and look up under the dash - you should see it. Often they have a plunger-type mechanism that will move in and out a short distance, with a simple two-wire connector.

It’s definitely the plastic stopper the sensor contacts. They crumble due to heat in the summer super common failure.

I see - I only ever replaced them on Fords, and on them the sensor itself would bust. OP, looks like it'll be an easy fix!

Yeah them Honda stoppers are so notorious they’re in every parts store in the aisle in a little Dorman packet. I usually just rob a pushpin from elsewhere on the vehicle.

First disconnect your battery before you cause a new unwanted issue and kill your battery.

Check your floor mat, make sure it’s not on the brake. If not it’s probably the switch under the brake pedal.
