Melting glaciers and ice caps could unleash wave of volcanic eruptions, study says

Isn’t this the premise to the show Paradise?

A 5x5 bingo card is just not going to get it done anymore.

Bingohno?!
No_Grocery_4574@reddit
Oh good, I was worried it was going to be a slow decay.
Funzombie63@reddit
I would so rather die to environmental causes than by invaded by the united fascists of America
Safewordharder@reddit
"United" my ass. Give it a minute.
Kaining@reddit
Already been 6 month and the resistance only action has been to roll over with cardboard box saying "booo fascism" and die.
overshootwins@reddit
We’re still to busy trying to convince ourselves Ghandi freed India with just peaceful thoughts. Funny actually had someone tell me that the post WW2 era proves how effective non violent resistance is, of course no hint of awareness of how an insane war is the only reason that happened and the usual downplaying of all the violence that took place after WW2.
goobervision@reddit
Why not both?
Prestigious-Log-7210@reddit
I’m American and I’m not fascist. Not all of us are against democracy and decency.
Funzombie63@reddit
Of course! I’m pretty sure all of us here are pretty sane people living in an increasingly insane world
Ok_Possibility_4354@reddit
I think most people are insane because of the world we live in. Like a trauma response
pradeep23@reddit
Still probably is. Those glaciers melt at a rate. Depending on that time could be decades or more
oe-eo@reddit
This is a natural check and balance. Mother earths own climate control.
Gets too hot, volcanic eruptions blot out the sun for a while until it cools off.
Nook_n_Cranny@reddit
Gaia theory strutting her stuff again.
thearcofmystery@reddit
Yeah its not a ‘could cause’, its only a when…
Notathroway69@reddit
Yep if anything this is good news, maybe some species will survive after all.
Let's hope New volcanoes start miraculously appearing in major fossil fuel producing areas.
Hilda-Ashe@reddit
Good news eh? We might be able to achieve nuclear winter without the nuclear part.
cafedude@reddit
... and possibly less humans who have been driving climate change.
retro-embarassment@reddit
This sounds really fun! I love volcanoes.
indiscernable1@reddit
This has been known for some time. At least theorized and discussed. We are cooked folks. Humanity as a collective organism is very dumb. The collapse is here.
Womec@reddit
Might cool it down a bit though?
Amazing-Marzipan3191@reddit
I was thinking that too. Eruptions below the ice, and water, may push vast amounts of water vapour into the atmosphere, giving us sudden cooling due to cloud reflectivity, or maybe just less rapid warming. Would probably give us rapid sea level rise too, so no silver lining with those clouds.
pegaunisusicorn@reddit
you should see them on an individual level. Still not impressive!
Ok_Possibility_4354@reddit
They’re still having babies like it’s the 1990s!!!
_ECMO_@reddit
The funny thing is that apparently the build-up before a supervulcane eruption doesn't (have to) take super long but can be done in just about a year.
refusemouth@reddit
I can't wait. I love volcanoes. I would love to see a rhyolite eruption instead of all this boring basalt.
CertainKaleidoscope8@reddit
The 1912 Novarupta eruption in Alaska was a rhyolite eruption

Yes. Always a worry that the crust flexion will wake up Yellowstone.
The weight shift can move fault lines so earthquakes too.
phantom_in_the_cage@reddit
Really makes you wonder why we never hear about stuff like this, whether its school, news, government, seems they're all pretty muted

Because of all the ‘Donnie in the Spotlight Show’ is so mind numbing.

Submission statement: Climate collapse is causing a cascade of other issues, and now it seems even volcanism may increase - loss of ice releases the pressure on underground magma chambers and makes eruptions more likely. This is related to collapse because we may have to include volcanoes in the omnicrisis now.

Finally, the apocalypse I was promised in the movies.

Time to flee Yellowstone in an RV!!!
cafedude@reddit
Is this how nature could heal itself? Eruptions lead to cooling and reforming of ice. And possibly less of us humans around.
TheRealKison@reddit
Volcanoes did play a big part in the last mass extinction.
pegaunisusicorn@reddit
omnicrisis? who cares about that! surely you mean on the 2026 bingo cards.

“We found that following deglaciation, the volcano starts to erupt way more, and also changes composition,” said Moreno-Yaeger. The composition changed as the magma melted crustal rocks while eruptions were suppressed. This made the molten rock more viscous and more explosive on eruption.
'Our study suggests this phenomenon isn’t limited to Iceland, where increased volcanicity has been observed, but could also occur in Antarctica,' he said. 'Other continental regions, like parts of North America, New Zealand and Russia, also now warrant closer scientific attention.'
Previous research has shown volcanic activity increased globally by two to six times after the last ice age"
Note: all that melting does not make permafrost healthy arable land. Canada and Russia will have less arable land in a hothouse earth not more. The whole world loses arabe land we even measure a football pitch becomes desert every day. Lots of material is trapped in the ice- like enough carbon to match what mankind has thrown up since 1700, metals that leach and turn rivers red, and bonus virii or bacteria that are ancient and have not had a host in millenia.
I feel conflicted - a large volcano - maybe the last big one was 1992 set us back .5C for a year or so. Hunga (the volcano that went to the stratosphere sending water vapor up tall) did not have such cooling. Maybe we will get a proper once in a millennia volcano eruption but that could knock out photosynthesis and I am spitballing but would that decrease global crop yields a statistically significant amount?
Far_Out_6and_2@reddit
Ya cause of weight
pradeep23@reddit
If we have major or long volcanic activity, its game over for sure.
Derrickmb@reddit
Nice. Stock market go up
Globalboy70@reddit
It's called isostatic rebound and it's the least of our worries, it's not the day after type scenario. But will play out over hundreds and thousands of years, so you may want to invest in a cryogenic spaceship if you want to watch the show.
harryelch@reddit
Can't wait for Trumps sculpted face on a soon erupting volcano wall blowing up on 24k ultra wide thin tv during FoxNews live coverage.
Rolling news something in caps: MAGA/Greta IS A LIAR

This isn't new news at all or another thing to worry about. It's been happening since the end of the last ice age

Immediately made me think of that episode from the Disney+ show about a super volcano eruption from Antarctica!
