Question about CDL Jobs & Self-Employment Verification — Need Advice

Hey y’all,
I’m working hard to get started in trucking. I’ve got my CDL permit, passed my tests, clean background, and I’m ready to roll.
Here’s my situation:
I’ve been self-employed the last few years running a small catering business, and I don’t have W-2s or 1099s from it — just my own records and a partner who can vouch for me.
I applied to Stevens Transport, but they flat out refused to accept anything except W-2s or 1099s; no letters, no affidavits, nothing else. They basically said DOT requires it (even though I know DOT allows self-employment with proof in some cases).
I’m now looking at companies like Western Express and others that are more flexible.
For anyone here who’s been in a similar spot:
- How did you handle self-employment gaps when applying for trucking jobs?
- Did any companies accept affidavits or letters?
- Any advice on how to get past this hurdle and get hired?
I really want to get started and I’ve been honest through the whole process, but this employment history stuff is stressing me out.
Any advice or experience would mean a lot. Thanks in advance.

I had that just recently. The employer used a 3rd part background check company (DISA I think) and they were satisfied with some documents that showed I was legitimately self employed. I ended up using a combination of stuff, but in the end they didn’t need W2’s or 1099’s. Anybody claiming it’s a DOT requirement is spewing BS.

That’s what I was thinking.
The only reason I reached out was because I satisfied the DOT requirements but I’ll find another company I guess it is what it is.
Thank you tho!

I would normally recommend omitting the self-employment and instead replace it with unemployed no income/assistance with some short BS explanation. Problem is the length of the unemployment gap that would be, which would probably create a problem itself. I was unemployed for just under 2 years 2020 to end of 2021 before I got my CDL and it wasn't a problem, but covid was an easy explanation to exploit at the time. I used to put rideshare on my employment history but stopped putting it because a company wanted tax forms. If you put any type of work they technically are supposed to verify it, but unemployment is obviously unverifiable if you say you haven't collected assistance, you just need a BS explanation.

Try applying for Roehl. They pay you for your CDL and they take anyone with a clean background and some proof of work history. Will pay you 600 perweek for training
