I have a 96 honda civic DX with 60,000 miles. What are cost effective ways to maximize HP?

Well horsepower costs money. How much do you want to spend?

I understand that. I should have phrased it as best bang for my buck. I've got 1500- 2000 to spend.

If you're serious, do a B swap. You can find the parts you need on FB for under $2k and it's pretty easy to do. That also leaves you with the option of a turbo down the road. I work with a guy who has a B20 swapped and turbocharged CRX who's running ~350 HP to the wheels. All done as cheaply as possible.

This sounds like what I'm looking for. Are there any issues to look out for with used parts?

Not beyond the usual disclaimers really. There's tons of engine and tranny options, so make sure you do your research and pick the right one. The transmission gearing can be super short.

Lots of nitrous. Most power per dollar, as long as you don’t blow the welds on your intake.

Gut your interior and AC delete. Cost nothing. Power to weight ratio.
