I just went to the PC shop around the corner, said I want to build a PC with a Core i7 and a Nvidia RTX 5070.
Went home with a Ryzen 9 9950 X3D and a Radeon RX 9070 XT. I think the guy in the shop is team red, not 100% sure about it though xD
I guess the last PC I built 25 years ago, it was way less work ... .
- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 4,3GHz AM5 144MB Cache
- MB ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-E GAMING WIFI
- DDR5 32GB PC 6000 CL30 G.Skill (2x16GB)
- 1 Powercolor Radeon RX9070XT Hellhound OC 16GB
- 1 SSD 2TB Samsung M.2 PCI-E NVMe Gen4 990 PRO Basic
- 1 CoolerMaster MWE Gold 1050W V2
- 427497 190.00 190.00
- Endorfy Arx 700 Air 8326607
- be quiet! WAK LIGHT LOOP 360mm All-in-One
Now that I see it I could wrap the 2 power cables from behind eh ... .

Unless you are doing some specific work with NVIDIA, AMD is the right choice.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
Dude said I have spared 200 on the graphics card alone.
Mels_101@reddit
What did you need the 9950x3d for then? 😂
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
3D stuff, Photoshop batch processes, virtual machines ... . I want to play some games but I also am a programmer and graphics designer. + I started to make mods for video games.
AND I hate to wait.
greggm2000@reddit
Hmm, the one caveat is that with an AMD GPU you won’t have access to DLSS, which is really common in games now, unlike AMD’s FSR, which isn’t common, and isn’t as good. Given your use case, this may be important. The 5070 Ti is a 16GB VRAM card and would be your best choice here. Up to you if swapping your 9070 XT would be worth it.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
When it’s about games I mostly play older games. I absolutely don’t care about 4K gaming, more than 60 FPS and stuff. I am 50. new games suck. Like 99/100 of them. Just my opinion. Yeah DLSS, when I need it I swap it, no problem.
Xoron101@reddit
My brother. Just turned 50, and I dove head first into my first new game in 20 years. It was fantastic. Please do yourself a favour and try Red Dead Redemption 2. I can't tell you how amazing that game is, and your rig will crush it. (Story mode, not online)
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I'm not a big fan of these Rockstar games. Last game I really liked was Baldurs Gate 3.
Xoron101@reddit
Trust me. RDR2 hits different. You just gotta make it out of chapter 1. It's an open world game and it is amazing.
JustinM0811@reddit
There arent many caveats. FSR4 is really good and not far at all from DLSS, Ray Tracing is still slower but only by a smidgen compared to 5070ti. Not only that but the 9070 XT has 16gb VRAM just like the 5070 Ti, i mean if there's not a NVIDIA niche work purpose the 9070 xt for like 100 or more less is a Much better choice.
greggm2000@reddit
You're right about FSR4, but there's very few games that support it currently, and depending on the version of FSR in your game, you can't tell the driver to just swap in FSR4, unlike with DLSS, which is still superior, where you can swap out older DLSS Upscaling versions. Yes, FSR4 is way better than FSR3 and should be perfectly acceptable, but DLSS still has an edge. Granted, most people probably won't be able to tell the difference in practice, and I do applaud AMD's efforts in this area.
However, based on what the OP has said his use case is, in the comments, the AMD 9070 XT is perfectly fine. Some people might prefer the 5070 Ti, but OP is not one of them.
Matasa89@reddit
Oh in that case the CPU is perfect for it.
You could even consider maybe a Threadripper.
Mels_101@reddit
Honestly, it's not the answer I expected. I hope you enjoy it mate.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I had a M4 Pro before (20 cores), can't go back to much slower stuff. Problem was the software. Need Windows for game mods. Experience with that thing is 1 day now, can't say I miss apple.
Xoron101@reddit
I can never justify that Apple Tax. I'll Intel/AMD till the day I die.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
Hardware is great but if you need WIN software ... .
Landooo420@reddit
i would have gotten nvidia then personally for that use case.
FunkFromAbove@reddit
This.
The 3xd Cpu‘s are a little but better for gaming, the x are better for productivity.
And I would get more ram depending on how many and how beefy vm‘s should be run simultaneously.
I got a 9950x (more cores -> good for productivity), 96 (2x48) Gb Corsair Vengeance DDR5 CL30 kit, Asus ROG Strix b650e-f gaming wifi, Liquid Freezer 3 360, Palit 5070 Ti Gaming Rock, 4 Tb Wd Black M.2 Nvme, Aorus Elite 1000W Platinum PSU and a Montech King 95 Pro case.
But I usually run a virtual enterprise lab (mutiple servers and clients) for learning /training
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I have 2 RAM slots free so no problem to put additional 32. lets see.
greggm2000@reddit
Note that on AM5, it's really best to only populate two of the RAM slots, even if you have 4 sockets physically present on the motherboard. If you don't, memory speeds will be much lower, and performance will suffer. Ofc, RAM, even at slower speeds, is way faster than swapping to SSD, so if you truly need to use all 4 slots for a use case, then go for it. Just be aware of the tradeoff.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
Okay, I would take 2x32 then. Thanks for the advise.
FunkFromAbove@reddit
And also, if you are serious about all the productivity stuff and if the price difference between the gpu‘s is not more than 300 euro I would consider to return the 9070xt and buy a 5070 TI.
For productivity 5070TI is about 30% better / faster than the 9070 XT.
One source of my claim is here:
https://tech4gamers.com/rx-9070-xt-vs-rtx-5070-ti/
But there are many others.
FunkFromAbove@reddit
Technically yes, it will be not as efficient as having all ram separated in two modules as far as I know.
B650 is a dual-channel board.
Here is a short cite:
„The ASUS ROG Strix B650E-E motherboard supports dual-channel RAM and has four DIMM slots, meaning you can install up to 192GB of DDR5 memory. While the board can technically handle four sticks of RAM, it will operate in dual-channel mode, not quad-channel.
Memory Configuration: While you can install four sticks of RAM, the board will operate them in dual-channel mode, meaning the memory controller will access two sticks simultaneously for improved performance.
Benefits of Dual-Channel: Dual-channel memory provides a significant performance boost compared to single-channel, especially in memory-intensive tasks like gaming and video editing.“
I do not know how much difference it makes, to be honest.
SenseIndependent7994@reddit
Dude must have been convincing
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
He convinced me with the price I guess. Also I had no clue, XBOX and Mac for the last 20 years you know ... . Didn't even know that people have watercooling nowadays. Back at my time that was SciFi stuff.
Inevitable-Net-191@reddit
Macs suck by default so congrats on your new beast
SenseIndependent7994@reddit
Watercooling is pretty commonplace nowadays and this pc should smash an xbox or macs
op3l@reddit
Ya... but will it run crysis?
ec_creep@reddit
I see what you mean lol.
Technically, the last time I built a pc was 2 decades ago. Five years ago I got a (mostly) prebuilt one, only had to replace the air cooler and install a gpu.
I just fully built one like 3 months ago. There are so many connectors these days, psus and case sizes are widely varied as well. The time required to choose components and build them have increased exponentially.
changen@reddit
Did you build it yourself or did he do it? The cable management is suspect lol.
Supplemental power can be hidden behind the board through the cutout.
Same for the jumble of wires around the ram. For AIO/fan wiring, I would go through up to a cutout, then back out again to a different cutout near the header. That way, extra wiring is always hidden.
If you really want to look nice, you can hide the wiring in the space of IO shield and loop it all the way up next to the supplemental power cables.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I did that. Yeah maybe I'll optimize that, for the moment I'm happy it didn't explode when I first turned it on.
Sibbour@reddit
Was there a question in your post? All the parts in your PC are high end, so I assume you had quite a budget.
I am somewhat disappointed in the cable management, though half that might be limited due to case choice.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
It was 2500 €. Yeah maybe I'll try to reorder these 2 power cables.
Kokukenji@reddit
If that side of the PC is going to be facing you, might as well re do the cabling. Nice build! Congrats!
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I don't really care about the looks, its under the table, but maybe for the air flow.
Unique-Client-4096@reddit
He basically got you a much better PC than you were looking to buy, honestly the 9950X3D beats the 14900k in both single and multithread.
SpecificDimension719@reddit (OP)
I said I have 2000 - 3000 to spent. He came back after 5 min. with all that stuff.
SenseIndependent7994@reddit
Not even a 14900k op was probably looking for a 14700 so a much bigger upgrade than expected
BlightlingJewel@reddit
The 9950x3d is kinda overkill if you don’t do any work with it or play really high end simulation games. The 9800x3d/7800x3d would’ve been enough imo
