A lot of times it prevents unnecessary stress on the mounting points, and if you have to jettison them in an emergency, it makes them fly such that they have a much lower chance of hitting the aircraft after separation

We're not in Syria, most of the helicoptera have some form of rocket/missile/gun to project fire instead of directly dropping something. Like the other guy said, external fuel tank.
