Who's your favourite British voice?
Posted by FootballIsRubbish@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 161 comments
Not necessarily a singer, although it could be I suppose. I just wonder who you like listening to just for the sound of their voice. For me it's John Betjeman - I will watch anything that he narrated because I just love hearing him talk. Do you have anyone similar?

I have somehow stumbled on a skit of how it would go if he played certain characters in certain films (one was Gilderoy Lockhart) and I about died. The scenes were hilarious and the guy nailed the impression

I get it but i think it comes from a position of confidence. He knows pretty much everything about the topics he is often there to discuss so he's kind of earnt the right to be a bit of a smarmy get, i still love him though and could listen to him talk all day long.

Abso-bloody-lutely. To think some people had the nerve to fucking complain when this superbly well-spoken man of exceptionally clear diction but who happens to do so with a beautiful rich Caribbean accent became an announcer on Radio 4.
I've thought from the start that he was brilliant, in contrast – and, yes, hearing that voice intone the matchless poetic cadences of the Shipping Forecast is veritable manna from heaven.

One Sunday morning I went down to the deserted "Warehouse District" (nighlife area) of Austin, Texas to retreive the pub car, having taxied home.
I'm walking along 4th street, literally the only prrson, a stray tumbleweed would have perfected the scene. And I swear I can hear Bill McLaren in the distance. In Texas, on a Sunday morning? Am I hallucinating?
The Irish themed pub down the street had the Scotland v Ireland game on, and had left their outdoor speakers on from Sat night.
FootballIsRubbish@reddit (OP)
I can imagine that would be quite disorientating. I once had a piss next to Bill at the Melrose Sevens - I was so star-struck I couldn't get started so just had to walk away and leave him.
