What's something that's expensive but worth it?

Title says it all. In my opinion, a good, well made pair of shoes is well worth the money. I'd rather spend more upfront and they last ages rather than spend £20 and they only last 2 weeks.
stoufferthecat@reddit
Along the same lines as shoes... a good mattress. Don't skimp on where you spend 30% of your day!
jonathing@reddit
Don't skimp on things that go between you and the ground

mentaldriver1581@reddit
Highly overrated.
Teembeau@reddit
I read an escort talking about this and she said that what people are paying for with "£5000/hr" escorts is nicer apartments, a really professional website, better haircuts and more expensive clothes. That there's a premium to get hotter women, but it's far below that.
morbid909@reddit
And crack. Crack is always worth the money if you’re going full degenerate for the night.
Character-Bid-5089@reddit
Hahaha. Only if they are good at their job tho.

Shoes are definitely one after wearing cheap for years! A descent pen- I was gifted a Mont Blanc and I adore it. Perfect weight. Smooth writing. Perfume/aftershave- someone who smells good leaves a lasting impression

Heinz Tomato Ketchup
Street_Inflation_124@reddit
I’ve gone over to the reduced sugar and salt Heinz since I got diabetes. If you eat that for a month or so you just think of that as normal ketchup.

Tools. Buy once, cry once. Or buy cheap and cry every time it needs to be replaced.
pip_goes_pop@reddit
As an extension to this, drill bits. Moved into a house where every wall, even internal, is absolutely solid brick (no tapping in a nail for a picture anymore). Good drill bits make the job much easier.
geeered@reddit
Plenty of my Aldi tools work just as well as the massively more expensive Dewalt ones for basic jobs.
If you want loads of power, the Aldi tools won't cut it, literally... but then then the 40v Aldi Chainsaw is a good bit lighter than the 54v Dewalt one. And actually, the 12v lidl one has taken down pretty big trees on it's own too.
Lumpy-Score3206@reddit
What about spare parts availability?
Loose_Avocado4670@reddit (OP)
How much are tools roughly? I wouldn't know 🤣
Obvious-Water569@reddit
That's like asking "how much is food?"

Have a look at anything Festool or Mafel, my 1/2 inch router was £600 from Festool 😂
AdTop47@reddit
That only really applies, like all this does, if you use them professionally. If you only use them casually the cheap ones are fine.
Both_Wrongdoer_7130@reddit
Alternatively buy cheap then if you use it enough to break it then buy expensive
phatboi23@reddit
this is the way, unless you can find quality stuff cheap second hand.

I'm a bit of snob when it comes to fragrances as I don't want to smell like every other person I pass on the street. I'm not saying cheaper scents don't smell nice but there is something just that extra bit special about the more expensive ones.

Mattress. You spend a third of your time there make sure it’s as comfortable as it can be!
religionisanger@reddit
To an extent… I spent way too much on my mattress and I bet it’s not that much better. I got a John Ryan by design mattress, think I spent about £3800 on it. Do I think it’s three times as good as a £1000… no. I feel a bit ripped off.
Ok_Leadership_2967@reddit
Apparently US customers have the right idea about spending on a quality mattress. UK here, I work in a carpet and bed shop and we're lucky if we can prise £200 out of someone for a mattress. The crap some people are prepared to sleep on astounds me. I'd say £1000 would get you something very decent though, anything else is likely to be overkill.
Less-Wolverine-7663@reddit
YES OMG can’t stress this enough - until someone told me about the silent night mattress protector which is THICK AF!!! It’s a game changer 😭😭😭
Teembeau@reddit
Good shirts, like Charles Tyrwhitt. Not Ralph Lauren, you're paying a ton of money for a logo. But CT Shirts are nicer to wear and will last for a decade and don't cost a whole lot more than Next ones.
Premium wine. And I don't mean the crazy stuff like £60+ Bordeaux where you're mostly paying for the name and diminishing return but there are amazing wines in the £15-£25 range from Chile and South Africa.
T Series Thinkpads. No other laptop is so solid, so easy to repair and they have the best keyboards. I recommend buying a refurb.

Proper handmade leather goods.
Belts, wallets etc.
My wallet is from a local leather worker. It's 12 years old and not even in its prime yet. I have a leather belt that's even older than that and it's still perfect.

Tumble dryer. Expensive to buy, expensive to run, but my kitchen is no longer an obstacle course made from clothes airers filled with damp clothes.
mordac_the_preventer@reddit
Heat pump tumble driers are more expensive, but worth it. The running costs are lower and it runs cooler so your clothes don’t get shrunk so much.
DigitalStefan@reddit
Many are manufactured to not be particlarly easy to service or repair and they will need service and repair more often than non heat pump models.
They are a great idea, but they are not so great in long term execution.
AdTop47@reddit
I had one break at fifteen months and the manufacturer just point blank refused to repair it, pump had gone and wasn’t worth it. The best they would offer was a discount on a new one, their ten year parts warranty wasn’t worth the sticker it was printed on.
DigitalStefan@reddit
I'm not buying one until I can get one that has been independantly reviewed and verified to be repairable without hassle.
I'm done with non-repairable crap. I'll pay 50% extra if I need to if that's what it takes to get an actually good product.
My last two laptop purchases were from Framework specifically because they support repairability as their core tenet.
Joystic@reddit
I know this is sacrilegious in these lands, but... air conditioning. Also turning the heating on when you're cold.

Have to downvote that, a jumper or warm dressing gown beats heater every day.

A cheap dog is also worth it. A less then perfect mut is going to cost you an awful lot less over time than an over bred cockadoddle-poo-retriever.

Fruit. We tend to shop in the cheaper supermarkets but, for seasonal fruit, especially berries… M&S. once you’ve had a strawberry from M&S it’s nigh on impossible to eat one of those odd, watery substitutes from any other supermarket.

Pretty much all British in season strawberries are delicious, no matter where you get them.

A bit of an odd one, but I feel like IKEA furniture gets unfair flack for being relatively expensive for flat-pack. I think a lot of bad opinions of flat-pack come from buying the cheapest possible shelves from Amazon and being surprised that they don't hold together so well.
Or somebody did something daft like try and move a fully-loaded bookcase, which is what kills flat-pack.
Street_Inflation_124@reddit
My wife and I put together a full flat pack kitchen from IKEA and it’s really nice. It’s a bugger to fit the piping though - there’s no concealed compartments.
SomeHSomeE@reddit
I'm a big fan of IKEA. 90% of my furniture is from there and as long as you're not picking the same basic bookshelf etc you see everywhere you can still build your own character and style. Even my (quite simple but nice IMO) kitchen units and integrated appliances are IKEA (installed by the previous owners 6-7 yrs ago and still like new).
