I use to love Yorkie until they made them into kids sizes.

For snacking: Dairy Milk, Lindt, Milka. I also love Galaxy but my husband says it tastes "sour" and I know it's not everyone's favourite. I was also always very partial to a 50p Happy Shopper milk or fruit and nut bar back in the day, but haven't seen them for years and doubt they're still 50p if they still exist, so the cheap Tesco Molly bars are a good substitute. For fancy: hands down Guylian seashells. For me nothing comes close to beating these.

Cadbury chocolate made and sold *in* the US is markedly worse than the UK equivalent. All very well saying it’s not as good as it used to be, but it really is a different product entirely in the US.
View on Reddit #60951223

sloefen@reddit

Due to the process used in the US their chocolate contains more butyric acid which is a compound found in vomit. I can't even smell US chocolate without wanting to heave.

View on Reddit #60954666

If you trust "general opinion" about anything it's hard to know what to say... "Yeah ok we were wrong about the blacks and the gays and the women and children and hand washing and monarchy and meritocracy and Jim's wife and ok maybe we shouldn't hang people for sleeping with consenting adults but since then we've become really good at being an unbiased and fair evaluation for basically anything. Jim's wife is a slag tho." Make up your own mind, and listen to the consensus of experts when it's beyond your ability. Although even then I expect you'd have a hard time aquiring older bars of chocolate. I mean if you want to have such cavalier attitudes with unimportant things that's one thing. But chocolate? Never chocolate.

My UK rellies really liked [this stuff](https://www.sanza.co.uk/new_zealand_brands.asp?brand=Whittakers) when they visited us in NZ so I always bring a few blocks over when I visit them in the UK. It's a NZ brand. I don't think it's in supermarkets but you can buy it online. They say it's creamier than the common UK brands. They have some pretty interesting flavours too in their [artisan range.](https://www.whittakers.co.nz/en_NZ/products?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=8989460785&gbraid=0AAAAADo9iiBRUGu3LmRyBxbOhygLracu8&gclid=CjwKCAjwprjDBhBTEiwA1m1d0mU7DJjnDL83f_cJJqqqeNpof79HEDLGycixEpjkptHPprkqv5wdHBoCFCAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#specialty-blocks)

Not true! Since production moved from Ireland the milk used is different, not as clean-tasting - can't beat Irish milk
View on Reddit #60956768

DPBH@reddit

I’m not picking sides in this discussion, but… I have a memory of a BBC show investigating the allegations of the recipe being changed. Their “scientific”study suggested that the change was completely down to the shape as it moved the melting point from what we were used to. To be honest, I never noticed the change. Personally, I prefer Lindt but the price has exploded recently and I can’t justify spending on it. So it’s a mix of Cadbury and Galaxy, with the occasion aero thrown in.

I mean it never tasted amazing. I did a blind taste test experiment of friends once, they were all convinced option 1 was much nicer and that it was therefore the dairy milk. It was coop own brand, from back in the day when they did nice chunky little bars of fairtrade.  Option 2 was the dairy milk.  And this was the 2000s so it was still "good" dairy milk
View on Reddit #60928411

Do people not like Dairy Milk now? I'm aware that lots of Cadbury's chocolate now uses some other cheap shit instead of Dairy Milk, but I thought that Dairy Milk was the same as it was before?
View on Reddit #60922905

Historical_Heron4801@reddit

I don't like it like I used to. But that's down to me, not the recipe. I started trying other chocolates when Kraft bought Cadbury and I prefer dark chocolates now. So Dairy Milk tastes weirdly sweet and the texture seems odd. For the original question I love a bit of Lindt, but also like Tesco Finest 85% Peru.

So many people responding who have apparently never had anything resembling good chocolate, but answered anyway. I would say “Hotel Chocolat” is well up there (talking about their chocolate, not their chocolates); but I don’t doubt that there are premium non-high-street brands that are superior. For something readily available and not over-priced for the quality Green & Black’s.

View on Reddit #60911703

PiemasterUK@reddit

Nobody in this thread have tasted good chocolate! I will declare this chocolate I have never heard of or tasted to be the best chocolate! Dude, you are the epitome of snobbery.
View on Reddit #60921190

pluckmesideways@reddit

Thanks for putting words in my mouth, but I would have preferred some good quality chocolate. I said that I researched it, and found them to be considered to be the best in the world. /u/nicknoxx clearly knows their chocolate, but I wasn’t going to upvote something that wasn’t the list of garbage “chocolate” that most others have mentioned without looking into it first. P.S. Please look up the word “snobbery”, and then re-read the question asked. Saying “I like Cadbury/Galaxy/Mars, etc.” because you’ve never had anything better does not make it the best chocolate available in the UK. (Mars isn’t even a brand of chocolate, FFS!)
View on Reddit #60921965

PiemasterUK@reddit

There is no such thing as "the best chocolate", it is an entirely subjective taste and this entire thread is nothing but opinion. My wife has tried all kinds of posh chocolate and her favourite is Dairy Milk. That is no less (or more) valid than someone who will only eat chocolate from a particular Ivory Coast cocoa farm made with exactly 87% cocoa solids mixed with the tears of grieving windows whose husbands died during the civil war. I mean I get it, there are snobs in every form of food and drink. I like Craft Beer and when people hear that they will subject me to no end of lectures about the 'heathens' who think that Stella and Heineken are good beer because they have never tried anything better. But heck, at least these people have actually *tried* the small batch DIPA they are claiming is objectively the best beer in the UK.
View on Reddit #60940335

nicknoxx@reddit

They are both 'good' but like everything you get diminishing returns as the price goes up.
View on Reddit #60927564

pluckmesideways@reddit

Also true for fine wine, which is only so much better than that an order of magnitude cheaper. Beyond a certain point you’re paying more for the brand and scarcity than you are for the content of the packaging. The inverse is also true, at least for wine, where below certain point you’re paying more in taxes, import duties, packaging and transport than you are for the content of the bottle.
View on Reddit #60928076

Jaraxo@reddit

Iain Burnett Highland Chocolatier in Grandtully in Scotland is top tier as well. Expensive as hell but probably the best I've had in the UK.
View on Reddit #60919907

LeTrolleur@reddit

I'd argue that good chocolate can be quite subjective, and will likely be heavily influenced by a person's childhood and upbringing. For some, the nostalgia of peeling open a bar of Dairy Milk on Christmas morning will be unbeatable, and for others only the best Swiss chocolate will scratch that itch.
View on Reddit #60918041

pluckmesideways@reddit

I don’t disagree, but that isn’t the question that OP asked. If he’d asked “how f those you’ve tasted, which chocolate do you like best, and why”, then fair enough. That said, any ranking will have a subjective element in addition to objective measures, so best left to experts. OP either asked the wrong question, or asked the wrong audience.
View on Reddit #60922672

Dry_rye_@reddit

You can't "objectively" rank chocolate bars. It's always going to be subject to the tastes of the consumer.  I.e. what's your "objectively" best bar then?
View on Reddit #60928616

StillNewspaper4799@reddit

Taste is subjective, the recent trend towards objectivity is just part of a larger move towards everything having to be a competition. Whether that is itself a cynical and largely successful maneauver by certain groups or just people being dumbdumbs... well, I guess time will tell Until then I think we just have to do our best to note our more demented behaviours. That said anyone who thinks they can out-taste me in a chocolate duel is deluded. They used to call me the brown nosed lickmeister. I have what they call a golden tongue, my tongue's temperature is perfect for chocolate tasting. Come at me scrubs.
