For snacking: Dairy Milk, Lindt, Milka. I also love Galaxy but my husband says it tastes "sour" and I know it's not everyone's favourite. I was also always very partial to a 50p Happy Shopper milk or fruit and nut bar back in the day, but haven't seen them for years and doubt they're still 50p if they still exist, so the cheap Tesco Molly bars are a good substitute.
For fancy: hands down Guylian seashells. For me nothing comes close to beating these.
If you can ever get hold of The Chocolate Smiths chocolate before they sell out, it's amazing. Well worth the price. More or less the only chocolate I buy now
Been hooked on kinder bueno for a few months now. Saw that Iceland have kinder bueno ice cream cones and now I’m trying to find an excuse to do an Iceland order.
I love bueno, was buzzing for the ice cream cones.... then massively disappointed. I took the rest into work. The top is a solid random disc of chocolate then like a weird paste underneath.
Though the girls at work didn't complain so maybe just me.
Yes I love Tony's
Pretzel, dark chocolate is my favourite
Great that they're transparent about the slavery that is still, unfortunately, present in today's chocolate trade
And despite they're best efforts, they still have exposure to slavery. It's so sad
Cadbury chocolate made and sold *in* the US is markedly worse than the UK equivalent. All very well saying it’s not as good as it used to be, but it really is a different product entirely in the US.
Due to the process used in the US their chocolate contains more butyric acid which is a compound found in vomit. I can't even smell US chocolate without wanting to heave.
If you trust "general opinion" about anything it's hard to know what to say... "Yeah ok we were wrong about the blacks and the gays and the women and children and hand washing and monarchy and meritocracy and Jim's wife and ok maybe we shouldn't hang people for sleeping with consenting adults but since then we've become really good at being an unbiased and fair evaluation for basically anything. Jim's wife is a slag tho."
Make up your own mind, and listen to the consensus of experts when it's beyond your ability. Although even then I expect you'd have a hard time aquiring older bars of chocolate.
I mean if you want to have such cavalier attitudes with unimportant things that's one thing. But chocolate? Never chocolate.
It’s often impossible to make your mind up yourself with this type of question as you would need to sample every type of chocolate available, people therefore take some direction based on the opinion of others.
My UK rellies really liked [this stuff](https://www.sanza.co.uk/new_zealand_brands.asp?brand=Whittakers) when they visited us in NZ so I always bring a few blocks over when I visit them in the UK. It's a NZ brand. I don't think it's in supermarkets but you can buy it online. They say it's creamier than the common UK brands. They have some pretty interesting flavours too in their [artisan range.](https://www.whittakers.co.nz/en_NZ/products?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=8989460785&gbraid=0AAAAADo9iiBRUGu3LmRyBxbOhygLracu8&gclid=CjwKCAjwprjDBhBTEiwA1m1d0mU7DJjnDL83f_cJJqqqeNpof79HEDLGycixEpjkptHPprkqv5wdHBoCFCAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#specialty-blocks)
I’m not picking sides in this discussion, but…
I have a memory of a BBC show investigating the allegations of the recipe being changed. Their “scientific”study suggested that the change was completely down to the shape as it moved the melting point from what we were used to.
To be honest, I never noticed the change.
Personally, I prefer Lindt but the price has exploded recently and I can’t justify spending on it. So it’s a mix of Cadbury and Galaxy, with the occasion aero thrown in.
I quite literally work for a company that manufactures and provides machinery for Cadburys. The recipe has not changed. The only change was that more of the process was automated.
I mean it never tasted amazing.
I did a blind taste test experiment of friends once, they were all convinced option 1 was much nicer and that it was therefore the dairy milk.
It was coop own brand, from back in the day when they did nice chunky little bars of fairtrade.
Option 2 was the dairy milk.
And this was the 2000s so it was still "good" dairy milk
Do people not like Dairy Milk now? I'm aware that lots of Cadbury's chocolate now uses some other cheap shit instead of Dairy Milk, but I thought that Dairy Milk was the same as it was before?
I don't like it like I used to. But that's down to me, not the recipe. I started trying other chocolates when Kraft bought Cadbury and I prefer dark chocolates now. So Dairy Milk tastes weirdly sweet and the texture seems odd.
For the original question I love a bit of Lindt, but also like Tesco Finest 85% Peru.
How do you feel about Bourneville? Quite a fan of that. Don't always want my dark chocolate to be black as night and bitter as anything because it's 200% cocoa.
Not any longer - used to love dairy milk and its brother whole nut (fruit and nut is dead to me since I was a child!).
Now it tastes completely different and I found out it’s got something to do with the yanks..
Buy my nice chocolate from specialists or Hotel Chocolate at a pinch. But we still get bars like bounty (I see you judging me!) and snickers for home snacks.
Galaxy all the way. I hate expensive, gourmet chocolate; I’ve tried most out there and cannot stomach classy choclate it seems 😂 I can eat dairy milk but galaxy has my heart ♥️
Agree. And, as far as I can tell, it's the only truly British choc you'll find on a supermarket shelf.
My one problem, unless I'm mistaken, is they don't do a straight up bar of dark chocolate.
I don't think you can grow cocoa plant in Britain? Could be wrong or maybe they're using specialized techniques, but I'd be surprised if it was commercially viable.
Far from it , depends on where you shop but there a whole host of British made chocolates in the supermarkets, I know there plenty in M&S and Aldi stock British stuff too, not as prolific as it should be but there plenty of stuff there if you look
It’s not as good as it was, I’m not sure whether they’ve changed the recipe but it tastes a bit waxy. It’s probably just as well as I was addicted to their giant chocolate buttons
My in-laws in South Korea are obsessed with high-end British chocolate. We take loads every time we visit and I actively search out new brands for our next trip over. I've checked some photos and online orders and here are some of the highlights, separated by geographical region:

I can't recall any from the North East or Northern Ireland, so I'm open to suggestions.
Harry Specters is hard to top. Also a good business to buy from - as a social enterprise they largely employ people with Autism.
But mostly because their salted caramels are truly incredible.
I bought some of their chocolate last Christmas as presents. My son is autistic, I was just on their site yesterday debating whether to add a bar each into my sons teacher hampers- I think this is my sign!
There’s a hot chocolate shop on Brick Lane in London. It’s the absolute tits.
And there’s a chocolatier in Peebles which does a killer chilli hot chocolate.
They’re my top two. There’s a third I like up in the Highlands but I can’t remember if they make their own stuff - pretty sure they do and it’s also good.
Lindt - 2 of the balls is the perfect about of chocolate to feel satisfied...although they are very moreish
Galaxy - just the plain version. Smooth and melts just right.
Terry's Chocolate Orange
Solkiki.
100% ethical.
No lecithins - EVERY other chocolate has these.
Frequent winners of chocolate awards.
Tastes amazing.
Crazy more people haven’t heard of them.
Caldey island, "Abbot's Kitchen"
[https://www.caldeyislandonlineshop.com/shop/confectionery/YKTI4YVFKVCVUII4NQX55B42](https://www.caldeyislandonlineshop.com/shop/confectionery/YKTI4YVFKVCVUII4NQX55B42)
Produced on behalf of a monastery on... Caldey Island just off Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
NOMO chocolate, especially considering it's vegan and gluten free. Meaning almost anyone can have it. You can find it at most major Sainsbury's stores.
I like Galaxy best, especially Minstrels, Tony's is alright. Aldi does a really great cheapo one made in Germany that tastes like Heidel but it's not always in stock. To be honest I don't mind Dairy Milk. Lindor are good too.
I just like chocolate basically.
I’ve never got Tony’s. Tastes like cheap advent calendar chocolate. Plus it technically isn’t slave-free anymore, which was the whole point of buying it.
Too thick.
Awkward chunks, non-uniform.
Tastes like cheap Christmas chocolate.
So many people have recommended Tony's to me, and I hoped it would turn me off my Dairy Milk addiction, but it's just great marketing from what I can tell, without any substance underneath.
Mass-market non-snob chocolate? Dairy Milk.
Fancy gourmet chocolate? Cenu Cacao in Leamington Spa - or your town's equivalent artisan chocolatier.
Beware, though, of "handmade chocolate" shops that just buy in chocolate chips, melt, temper and mould them.
Lindt or Tony’s they’re a bit dearer but taste better to me , galaxy and dairy milk just taste like sugar now , my favourite chocolates how ever are the guylian Belgian chocolate seashells
Guylian changed the recipe a few years ago and it just doesn't have that same moreish quality to it. I used to make myself sick eating those and now even though they're still very nice, I'm satisfied with one or two
Very niche choice but there's a chocolatier in Tynemouth called Gareth James who makes utterly fantastic chocolate (and hot chocolate!). I'd highly recommend it!
So many people responding who have apparently never had anything resembling good chocolate, but answered anyway. I would say “Hotel Chocolat” is well up there (talking about their chocolate, not their chocolates); but I don’t doubt that there are premium non-high-street brands that are superior.
For something readily available and not over-priced for the quality Green & Black’s.
This is the only correct answer. I’ve never had (or even heard of) either, but from what I can find, they’re considered the best in the word, and are available in the UK
Nobody in this thread have tasted good chocolate! I will declare this chocolate I have never heard of or tasted to be the best chocolate!
Dude, you are the epitome of snobbery.
Thanks for putting words in my mouth, but I would have preferred some good quality chocolate. I said that I researched it, and found them to be considered to be the best in the world.
/u/nicknoxx clearly knows their chocolate, but I wasn’t going to upvote something that wasn’t the list of garbage “chocolate” that most others have mentioned without looking into it first.
P.S. Please look up the word “snobbery”, and then re-read the question asked. Saying “I like Cadbury/Galaxy/Mars, etc.” because you’ve never had anything better does not make it the best chocolate available in the UK.
(Mars isn’t even a brand of chocolate, FFS!)
There is no such thing as "the best chocolate", it is an entirely subjective taste and this entire thread is nothing but opinion. My wife has tried all kinds of posh chocolate and her favourite is Dairy Milk. That is no less (or more) valid than someone who will only eat chocolate from a particular Ivory Coast cocoa farm made with exactly 87% cocoa solids mixed with the tears of grieving windows whose husbands died during the civil war.
I mean I get it, there are snobs in every form of food and drink. I like Craft Beer and when people hear that they will subject me to no end of lectures about the 'heathens' who think that Stella and Heineken are good beer because they have never tried anything better. But heck, at least these people have actually *tried* the small batch DIPA they are claiming is objectively the best beer in the UK.
Also true for fine wine, which is only so much better than that an order of magnitude cheaper. Beyond a certain point you’re paying more for the brand and scarcity than you are for the content of the packaging.
The inverse is also true, at least for wine, where below certain point you’re paying more in taxes, import duties, packaging and transport than you are for the content of the bottle.
I'd argue that good chocolate can be quite subjective, and will likely be heavily influenced by a person's childhood and upbringing.
For some, the nostalgia of peeling open a bar of Dairy Milk on Christmas morning will be unbeatable, and for others only the best Swiss chocolate will scratch that itch.
I don’t disagree, but that isn’t the question that OP asked. If he’d asked “how f those you’ve tasted, which chocolate do you like best, and why”, then fair enough. That said, any ranking will have a subjective element in addition to objective measures, so best left to experts. OP either asked the wrong question, or asked the wrong audience.
You can't "objectively" rank chocolate bars. It's always going to be subject to the tastes of the consumer.
I.e. what's your "objectively" best bar then?
Taste is subjective, the recent trend towards objectivity is just part of a larger move towards everything having to be a competition.
Whether that is itself a cynical and largely successful maneauver by certain groups or just people being dumbdumbs... well, I guess time will tell
Until then I think we just have to do our best to note our more demented behaviours.
That said anyone who thinks they can out-taste me in a chocolate duel is deluded. They used to call me the brown nosed lickmeister. I have what they call a golden tongue, my tongue's temperature is perfect for chocolate tasting.
Come at me scrubs.
Cadbury. Yeah it’s changed a bit probably for the worst, but it’s still good chocolate.
Also the white twirl is elite.
Tony’s is good too but too expensive. I’m all for what they stand for but I’m not rich.
I heard they brought them back and they're still in stores where I live. Not all stores but some.
I do worry though, just because it's not a best seller they'll get rid of it? Seems like some nonsense to me, and it seems people made enough of a fuss about it that they backtracked.
I just worry that they'll keep trying and in 10 years they won't be around...
Wee stall called Chocolate from Narnia at Ayrshire farmers markets. They do a smooth and a crunchy peanut butter chocolate that tastes amazing and melts in the mouth. Also Baking With Attitude who use chocolate heavily on their stall - C'wa'bana bar is all Chocolate and cherry and caramel and gorgeous.
Yep! Always worth a diversion off the A9 if you're up that way. I know you're meant to say the best chocolate is something dark and exotic but their normal milk chocolate is insanely good as well. Their proper hot chocolate is amazing as well.
IMO Lindt milk chocolate with hazelnuts. Always love a bit of Galaxy. Don't like dark chocolate personally. But if white chocolate Milky bar is ok but not too much.
I've got pretty simple tastes.
Yum - love their quaint little shop in Burlington arcade.
Any specialist chocolate shop is going to have great chocolate as these are typically set up and run by the owner who is very passionate about the quality so will be finest ingredients made with close eye on all steps.
Check out Melt and William Curley, both in London..
I like Tesco's Finest Peru dark chocolate best of all. Hotel Chocolat pretty good too. For boxes, Terry's All Gold or some sort of dark truffle assortment.
Cadbury's is still the best milk chocolate, but I don't think it's as good as it used to be.
Most of the answers here are supermarket brands, which will never be the best. I like Cocoa Runners for a treat, they curate some high quality chocolate
Lidl dark chocolate
Used to be Asda dark chocolate but they hiked the price from £1.90 to £2.80
Both are still 50% cocoa solids, so it's on par with your more expensive brands.
Green and blacks as a treat now and then.
I really like the Cadbury dark milk.
Belgian chocolate is generally very highly regarded. It's expensive but some say worth it. Leonidas, Côte-d'Or, etc
Ex-pat here, when I return home I’m looking only for Galaxy and for Cadbury’s Star Bar or Whole Nut. I love the products but not enough to pay extortion online prices for shipping to California.
On the continent, I usually go with the Ritter Sport varieties. In the US, a Reese’s PB cup or bar is my go to because American chocolate like Hershey’s is mostly shit. Aldi’s own brand chocolate is imported from Germany and tastes fine, cheaper and not quite as smooth as Lindt but still good enough.
