A mandatory 30 day impound of a driver’s cell phone if caught using it behind the wheel

Financial punishment isn't enough to stop most people. This would actually get a lot of people to put the phone down and distracted driving would plummet 📉

It's too cheap and easy to buy a second phone. But lock out all social media accounts for 30 days? Now we're talking.
__Salahudin__@reddit
I would say anything except the necessities.
DookieShoez@reddit
Go ahead, I don’t have any social media.
I was updooting cat-memes on Reddit, the ANTIsocial media!
🧐
GoBeWithYourFamily@reddit
Reddit still counts
bourj@reddit
Yeah, cut off internet access for 30 days and watch people have absolute meltdowns.
kicker3192@reddit
how, exactly, are you gonna do that? explain that one to me chief
bourj@reddit
Geofencing.
Substantial-Ad-8575@reddit
Can’t be bypassed. Or simply just get a burner phone.
bourj@reddit
You mean like when people drive without a license? This is r/CrazyIdeas, dude.
sxrrycard@reddit
Why would ISPs justify this loss in revenue?
bourj@reddit
They don't lose revenue. Also, this is r/CrazyIdeas, please read the room 😂

Airdrop them in the middle of Alaska.

Just make distracted driving carry a ridiculously high punishment. 30 days in jail.
But we’re less than 10 years away from fully autopilot cars being the norm, so it’s really a dying issue.
BakedMitten@reddit
I remember thinking the exact same thing in 2015
Effective_Cold7634@reddit
You were quite dumbly optimistic.
BakedMitten@reddit
Elon was saying it'd be solved by the end of the year. By now we were supposed to be colonizing Mars
Rab_in_AZ@reddit
How many self driving cars did you see in 2015?
nope-nope-nope-nop@reddit
I mean, it just follows the normal timeline of automobile upgrades.
Normally, when we get a working prototype of something that’s useful (Tesla’s autopilot) it takes about 10 years for it to become the norm.
Power steering was put into the first car in the early 1950’s, by the mid 60s, it was standard
Same with fuel injected motors.
It may not be in every car by 2035, but it will Be the equivalent of cars with Bluetooth capability today
Ateist@reddit
Instead of jail, force the driver to install autopilot.
nope-nope-nope-nop@reddit
Honestly, this may be a solution in a few years.
Ateist@reddit
Why wait?
They already exist and are comparable to drivers.
Just need a special "watch out for distracted driver/driver that fell asleep/got a heart attack" mode.
kenmlin@reddit
But no fines?
KelpFox05@reddit
Or - and here's a fucking wild idea - improve public transport services to the point where nobody NEEDS to drive and it's totally optional. Then we can just start taking away licenses entirely for dangerous driving. Want it back? Gotta do a long course on the thing you got your license taken away for (6 months, let's say) and then you have to do the whole test over again.
TimeCookie8361@reddit
Could start by banning it from the police first. Nothing says bullshit like saying "you can't do it because it's dangerous, but we can do it"
xxrainmanx@reddit
Nothing says "do what I say, not what I do" like a laptop mounted to the dashboard so the officer can use it while driving.
no_sight@reddit
Take the car away.
Ryuu-Tenno@reddit
Take the license, cause itll be harder to replace whrn its on a time limit, lol
no_sight@reddit
People love to drive without a license. The chance of being caught is so low.
sonicbeast623@reddit
My uncle drove 15 years without a license after it was suspended for a dui. My understanding is it was only a 1-2 year suspension but he was too lazy to bother getting it back till like two years ago when he got a legitimate job and not under the table work.
BakedMitten@reddit
Might as well stop licensing drivers entirely then.
hardervalue@reddit
No, we should stop wasting resources on ticky tack fines and ordinances that turned police into crime manufacturing agents sitting on the roads, monitoring us, and have them actually go to the homes of the people who don’t have licenses to verify they aren’t driving to work every morning.
GreenRider7@reddit
Or we could just not build a society around cars as a default.
Clean_Vehicle_2948@reddit
Nah, community service
Picking uo trash on the highway is something to make you reconsider
frank26080115@reddit
that might actually kill somebody these days
Humanhater2025@reddit
i’d rather see it treated as a DUI felony offense, first time offense $10k fine, 1 year license suspension. 2nd offense, 1 year in jail, forfeiture of license for 5 years.
Megalocerus@reddit
You mean I have to go back to trying to read a map behind the wheel?
MartyMcFlyAsFudge@reddit
... I mean, anyone who has money could go buy another phone and people who don't have money are the only ones actually, truly punished by fines so I'm not sure this changes much.
As the saying goes, any punishment you can buy your way out of is as good as legal for those with money.
Kaurifish@reddit
And, rich or poor, many drivers will be tempted to make a run for it, which threatens bystanders.
hardervalue@reddit
Why don’t you GTFY? I’m a good driver even when using my cell phone.
Instead of stupid rules and more nanny state and taxes dressed up as fines, perhaps we should continue to develop better automatic, breaking and avoidance mechanisms for our cars to drive safely with distracted drivers and to minimize distractions with services like CarPlay enable you to use powerfully important mobile features while driving with both hands still on the wheel ?
Penis-Dance@reddit
Cell jail.
