9070XT vs 5070Ti - £60 difference. Is it worth it?
Posted by ProbablySkerrim@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 57 comments
Hey, so basically I'm looking to upgrade my GPU and I was going to get a 9070XT, either the Powercolor Reaper or the Gigabyte OC. Then I had a quick look and realised that I could get the ASUS Prime OC for just £60 more. Do you personally think that it's worth going for the 5070ti or just spend the £60 on something else? Also, as a current AMD user, what would be the main advantages of switching to NVIDIA?
Thanks for any replies in advance. :)
Fragluton@reddit
Pocket the 60 pounds and enjoy the 9070XT. Not worth any extra money IMO, both are great cards.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Have you had any issues with games that don't have FSR4 implementation? The accessibility of DLSS is the major sticking point for me at the moment.
Fragluton@reddit
I only recently started using FSR4 after getting a new screen 3440x1440P and wanting well north of 100fps. Previous to that i'd never used it. I don't play many games right now, so can't comment on the lack of FSR4 in games. What screen resolution are you gaming at? And what refresh rate can the monitor handle? Really depends what frame rate you want too. I'm playing BO6, so the extra frames are handy, I also like to keep the quality settings for textures and everything high.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
1440p and 144hz. I don't really mind if I don't max out the frame rate but would definitely like to keep myself in the triple figures with high fidelity if I can help it. I like to play a mix of games (also like to play BO6) but like to mostly play modern triple A games like TLOU, Diablo, KCD2, Tales of Avalon etc. so just trying to figure out which card is the best all rounder. Also, whether DLSS is gonna be worth that extra few quid.
Fragluton@reddit
Yeah only you can decide that, in my case the price difference was (at release) and still is, like 200 quid... which makes quite the difference. My last few cards have been AMD, and I always buy based on best bang for buck. DLSS is supported in more games, but over time FSR4 will gain more support too. So it's really up to you, no right or wrong answer as every situation is different. I would think both would net you triple figures in most of those games without DLSS / FSR enabled. The likes of Hardware Unboxed offer great coverage of many games with both cards, so check out their reviews too.
run_14@reddit
5070Ti.
I've tried 3 different 9070 XT's, the Red Devil, the Nitro+ and the XT Elite and whilst they were all amazing, AMD's software is just too far behind along side their upscaling tech. Not to mention their drivers, I absolutely hate Adrenaline.
So, you have to weigh up the options. With a 5070Ti you get 15% away in terms of pure rasterisation from a 5080 @ 4K resolution, you get DLSS which is superior to FSR, you get better RT performance, the list goes on.
Save yourself the headache, get the 5070ti and just enjoyer a better, more well-rounded product.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
What would you say makes AMD software so much worse? I'm really interested in this as I'm so used to Adrenalin and I don't know the difference or how easy it would be to make the switch.
run_14@reddit
It's way too convoluted in my opinion, so bloated, it comes w/ so much shit that you just don't need. I was forced to use radeonslimmer to remove all the gunk, the bloat and have it feel like a usable piece of software. I like simplicity and the worst part is if you use min install or driver only then it strips features that you technically want access to.
But yeah, AMD are making great strides with the 9070 XT but I think until their upscalers and software improves? It's NVIDIA's game tbh. Maybe that's just me though.
LorkieBorkie@reddit
9070XT is actually a bit faster in almost every game woth the new drivers in raw raster.
Nvidia has better raytracing performance and upscaling tech, but the gap isn't nearly as big as it was with previous generations. FSR4 doesn't support as many titles, but they are growing their library quickly.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Okay so this is something that I was actually quite worried about, I'm super used to Adrenalin at this point and I'm worried about switching. Have you used both? What's the major differences in your opinion if you don't mind me asking? Thanks either way!
LorkieBorkie@reddit
Used the Nvidia app a good bit when I was building my freind's PC. I'll actually take back my statement, it's not "vastly" different, but just lacking features in certain areas, like overclocking or recording. It's usable, much better than the old Control planel and Geforce Experience crap, but Adrenalin is simply more mature.
theh0tt0pic@reddit
It depends on what your use case is. Pure gaming? It's a toss up, the 9070xt outperforms the 5070 ti in a lot of titles, but the 5070 ti has better upscaling frame gen and raytracing and there are a couple of titles that it just smokes the 9070xt last I saw. At that close of a difference? I might go 5070ti, but I don't know. I hate Nvidias greed enough to buy AMD out of spite even if FSR4, Framegen, and Ray tracing aren't as up to snuff. I chose the 9070xt but there was a very much larger difference in price because I have a white build and the cheapest 9070xt is white, and every 5070 ti in white was at minimum $250 USD higher.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Yeah, the only reason that I'm really considering it is because of that small price difference. That and access to DLSS and the fact that so many games come with force ray tracing nowadays. I think that tiny performance boost might pay serious dividends in a lot of modern games. I don't really care for RT but I hate the idea of having noticeable performance loss in game like Black Myth just because I'm forced to have RT/Path Tracing on and I don't have a card that excels at it. The 90 series closing the gap is so sick though, I hope AMD does catch up so NVIDIA are forced to drop their prices.
theh0tt0pic@reddit
I mean that's fair. At that little of a difference, if it was my budget id have gone 5070 simply because im used to Nvidia at this point, but thankfully for me, actual price outweighed petty and I was able to choose for my wallet and consciousness.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I think I'm mostly decided on the 5070Ti at this point, just going to go and look at some specific games just to make doubly sure before I place the order. Thank you for your help by the way!
theh0tt0pic@reddit
Welcome, enjoy!
beirch@reddit
They're actually neck and neck on ray tracing as well, excluding path tracing. Path tracing is implemented in 11 games total though (5 AAA titles), so it's not exactly a huge decider.
theh0tt0pic@reddit
ahhhhh, see ray tracing isnt really high on my priority list, all i ever hear is AMDs ray tracing isnt as goo d, ill start playing with ray tracing a little bit, i was messing around with it in Cyberpunk.
ilIicitous@reddit
Ray tracing is actually a toss up between the two cards nowadays too. Comes down to the game, but amd has really stepped up recently
theh0tt0pic@reddit
yeah, im quite happy with my purchase, I dont have a 5070ti to compare ray tracing with but it was never high on my priority list.
1Fyzix@reddit
Go with the 5070 ti.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
What do you think the main advantages are that make it worth that bit extra if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for the reply either way!
Zaknokimi@reddit
I chose 5070ti just because unfortunately nvidia is just more compatible for most things, and the extra cost justifies any possible hassle I might've run into. That, and obviously the extra features it has help win it.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
I'm leaning towards the 5070ti just because of the fact that DLSS is widely available and FSR is a bit more of a mixed bag. I'm just so used to AMD that I'm a little worried about the switch and getting used to things on the Green side.
Zaknokimi@reddit
If you're used to AMD then you might be fine, but yeah up to you
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much for your help by the way! The compatibility of DLSS etc. has definitely got me leaning team green at the moment.
1Fyzix@reddit
1 - DLSS 4 and MFG x4
2 - Superiour video encoders (AMD 9000 series have become close)
3 - Still better RT than AMD, but not that huge gap.
4 - "Heavily depending" on your market, you may sell it later for better price than the 9070 xt.
5 - CUDA cores for workstation stuff
6 - You get the premium NVidia treatment, free giveaways, and some exclusive stuff.
7 - some softwares are more optimised for nvidia systems.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Thank you for the list! It makes it a lot easier to pinpoint what to go and look at. I'm finding all this stuff quite overwhelming to try and go compare lol.
ilIicitous@reddit
Better upscaling (dlss) and better frame gen technologies. The 9070xt has better raw rasterization performance but the 5070ti is generally better at similar price points. And I own a 9070xt.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Okay, thank you. If it's not too time consuming/complex etc. would you mind giving a quick breakdown of how rasterization translates to real world performance? If not I totally understand and I'm sure I can just go and Google it. Thanks either way!
RedBoxSquare@reddit
DLSS for more game support and all features are available today. CUDA, in case you need to resell it to content creators using Premier or AI tech bro doing LLM.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
I think that the DLSS might sway it for me, just because I want to play a vast array of games, and with some being so poorly optimised nowadays and being so heavy to run, I think the comfort of knowing that I'll have access to DLSS where I might not have access to FSR4 is huge.
hamburgerc00l@reddit
If you do work and gaming, the 5070ti. But if you just game, 100% the 9070xt.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I basically use it exclusively for gaming. So I'll probably just stick to my current choice then. Thank you for the help! :)
Educational-Yogurt22@reddit
Look, you're going to get conflicting answers, based on personal choice and anecdotal experiences. The best way to choose is to look at some YouTubes from Hardware Unboxed and see the games that you play, and which card will give you the best experience. They have a couple head-to-head 5070 Ti and 9700 XT, as well as a new one talking about the latest driver update for the 9700 XT.
That said, I agree with hamburgerc00l, if you're purely gaming, the 9700 XT is a great option, and I don't think you'll miss Nvidia's feature set this time around. But I do recommend taking the time to research your use case for yourself.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I've had a lot more answers than I expected on this thread with everyone sort of saying different things so I think I'm going to use it as a jumping off point to go and look at the most common things that people are listing. I was stupidly hoping for a straight forward answer but it looks like I've got something to do with my night at least lol.
Leo9991@reddit
For gaming, you'll get better and more widespread support for upscaling with Nvidia.
Quito98@reddit
If price is same u always buy NVIDIA.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Imagine I'm really, really dumb (you don't have to try too hard), what are the key advantages to NVIDIA that make it worth the extra 60? Thanks for the reply btw. :)
Quito98@reddit
DLSS,better ray tracimg performance, like 50% + Path tracing performance is games like black myrh wukong, doom, indiana jones and so on.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Okay that makes sense, just one last thing if you don't mind. Sorry to slam you with so many questions. Do you have any examples of the sort of workloads that it's more effective for? Is it across the board or for more specific use cases?
Quito98@reddit
U need to google that. Everything that requires GPU workload uses CUDA-NVIDIA.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that's fair enough. Thank you for all your help!
rip-droptire@reddit
The ray tracing performance difference is not as large as you are claiming, and on top of that, RT still isn't worth it
Quito98@reddit
Yeah right. Tell that to me when i play indiana jones with full PT and OLED on 4K that it is not worth it. 😂
metarinka@reddit
Nvidia has better frame Gen and ray tracing. But do yourself a favor look up the games YOU play and see if they have those features. Frame Gen is pointless for fast multiplayer games like fps, and ray tracing isn't in everything.
KillEvilThings@reddit
Nah don't listen to that guy. They're extremely overselling the shit Nvidia has when AMD has very similar things - the ONLY aspect that would make a huge difference is pathtracing performance that destroys still any modern GPU unless you want to use upscaling and frame gen heavily that both GPUs do have.
Don't support Nvidia if you can, that's why our GPU market is so shit. All the people pissing and shitting about how bad Nvidia are then buy Nvidia anyways.
kanaaka@reddit
Dlss is on way more games than fsr4, that alone is good enough reason to choose 5070 Ti over the 9070 XT. Ray tracing is toss up, but you might wanna try some path tracing sometimes, in path tracing 5070 Ti far better than 9070 XT and it is in playable territory not just better in percentage.
But if you love amd so much, then 9070 XT also a good deal. Both cards are equally good, but for me 5070 Ti is better.
ProbablySkerrim@reddit (OP)
I'm not biased either way (I understand that it looks that way) I've just done a lot more research on the 9070XT as that has been what I thought I was going to go with for a while and I'm a lot more used to AMD. NVIDIA is completely foreign to me and I wanted people with more knowledge and experience to give me a jumping off point to go and research things a bit closer myself! Also, with the 5070Ti I guess I'm effectively asking people to change my mind as I thought I was going AMD so just getting more info! :)
Thank you for the break down, currently leaning towards the 5070ti, just need to go and have a look at the performance difference in my preferred games to get a proper comparison and cinch the deal.
Thank you for the reply!
-PaVeLoS-@reddit
I dont rally know what to recomend you, but in case you'll go with 9070xt, dont buy this gigabyte model, cuz its pretty loud and have problems with leaking thermal putty
Omni-Drago@reddit
5070ti will be the better option in this case
Zynchronize@reddit
They are basically neck and neck, trading blows between across different titles. I suppose it depends on the specific titles you want to play.
I ended up upgrading my RTX3070 to a RX9070 - have been very happy with it.
Jesuisunetchoin@reddit
Even if AMD improved theur RT, nvidia’s is still far ahead, and the reason why ppl buy AMD over Nvidia is for the price, not the performance (yea it means the same), for £60 diff I’d get the 5070ti
beirch@reddit
They're really only far ahead in path tracing specifically (which is currently found in 5 AAA titles, 11 titles total). In any other RT implementation they're neck and neck.
Big-Salamander-2158@reddit
If you do anything besides gaming, pick nvidia. If you exclusively game, it doesn’t matter pick the cheapest
waffle_0405@reddit
Honestly depends what games you play, 9070xt as of rn has less driver issues and is slightly faster 5-10% avg in non ray traced games and about 10% slower in ray traced games.
Overall which is faster and a better buy at these prices is highly dependent on what the game favours- could be heavily AMD or Nvidia biased depending on title so I’d look at what games exactly you intend to spend most of ur time on but can’t go wrong either way really.
Background_Yam9524@reddit
I'd go with the 5070ti if it m only costs 60 pounds more than the 9070xt.
