It’s Canadian but fair
yomamaeatcorn@reddit
Wasn't basketball invented by a Canadian too?
AnyTomato8562@reddit
Wait - isn’t Canada the 51st state?
EvilLibrarians@reddit
If you’re a cultist! lol
70U1E@reddit
Historically yeah.
But the world's premier hockey league, the NHL, has 25 American teams and 7 Canadian teams.
Also, Canada hasn't won a Stanley Cup in over 30 years.
I know that's some devil's advocate stuff and that when someone says "hockey" you immediately think "Canada." Hell, even I do that.
But it's similar to baseball where that's incredibly American, but there are big, passionate fan bases in Korea and Japan who have made the sport their own.
CoolAbdul@reddit
When someone says hockey is immediately think Boston Bruins.
Lil_Sumpin@reddit
I hear hockey and immediately think Florida.
EvilLibrarians@reddit
Funnily enough, Japan beat us in the World Baseball Classic in 2023, and have 3 championships to our 1, so very good analogy.
But as a Michigander who’s spent a fair amount of time both sides of the border, Canada is way crazier about hockey than we are. Like, everyone is WELL AWARE of the streak and it’s wild when you see how close they have gotten so many times.
Yes, America has more teams, but Canada has way more hockey teams than basketball or baseball combined. Per capita, Canada clears USA in hockey (1/10th of the population but 7/32 teams)
70U1E@reddit
Yeah, I'd say you're probably right. Culturally they're way more wild about it than we are.
It was amazing to watch the Cup finals and see Edmonton fans just PILED outside the arena haha. I really wish they would have beat Florida.
EvilLibrarians@reddit
When that dam finally breaks, it’s gonna be very special for that nation. But you’re absolutely right, there’s some people who love hockey to death here.
I don’t love Florida but they sure as hell earned it!

My favorite sport is probably football, followed by hockey. I would then put basketball and baseball behind them on my personal list.
There are millions and millions of people who would probably do the same.
Hockey has to be on this list. There are not three major American Sports, there are at least four and probably five given soccer’s enormous growth in popularity in this country over the past 20 years.
SevenHunnet3Hi5s@reddit
i love the culture of american football. the whole tailgating thing and the performances that come with it is unlike any other.
sport wise though i love basketball. its fast, its in your face. you’ve got players jumping up 10 feet in the air and shooting from a mile away (not literally.) you’ve got players doing all these tricks with the ball and it’s beautiful. its a jack of all trades in a sports in my opinion.
i wish it could be combined with the culture that american football has. closest i’ve experienced is college basketball but its still not quite the same.

How is Soccer seen in the US? Is it even in the conversation or is it too niche still?
Guy2700@reddit
It really depends on the city. If you go to a place like Portland, you’ll find a lot of soccer fans. My home city, Charlotte, NC, has a lot of soccer fans and one of the best soccer environments in the country. North Carolina is also where the College Soccer Cup is played every year, although it is in Raleigh.
maxman1313@reddit
Soccer is a very popular youth sport and most Americans now understand the basics of the game.
As a professional sport, it's still niche. MLS has some fans but those more or less only exist in cities where there's an MLS team, and are completely non-existent outside of those cities.
You can find a soccer bar and soccer fans (usually of an English club) in every city in the US.
Popularity is slowly growing, but still a distant 5th in popularity at the professional level after ice hockey.
Covin0il@reddit
Still pretty niche outside of urban die hards or immigrant communities. The MLS Apple deal killed off casual fans I think.
srm775@reddit
Yeah, MLS really fucked themselves

Hockey is a bigger sport in the USA than soccer
Gaspasser09@reddit

Even though I’m a huuuge hockey fan - soccer is much more popular here in the USA…Now at the pro levels - we have the NHL dwarfing MLS, but in the next 10 plus years that may change.
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
It's in the conversation. It has a very high participation rate and although MLS remains a niche league, a lot of Americans follow the big European leagues and international tournaments.
Daddysheremyluv@reddit

Notgeorge37@reddit
It’s big for young girls. Lots of them are getting into it. Boys tend to play the other sports if they’re good enough. It is a good alternative if you’re not athletic enough to play football or hockey
PhilTheThrill1808@reddit
This is the most boomer take I've seen in a long time.
doccat8510@reddit
This is definitely how it’s viewed in smaller towns in the US. If you’re not big enough to play football, you play soccer. They’re the same season so that’s how it shakes out. Hockey is a winter sport so it’s more of a mix
Slotter-that-Kid@reddit
You've never played I take it. It isn't my sport but I have played enough for fun to know it is harder than most of our sports, only hockey players are on the move as much as a soccer player.
chupacabra1@reddit
Living in a city with an MLS team helps. Even still, fewer than <10% of those residents are probably interested. A lot of people still flaunt an anti-soccer sentiment, at least in the South.
I like that soccer has continuous play. American college football is flooded with commercials and often goes 4+ hours. That's a huge downside, and I grew up playing years of football.

Football is my favorite, especially College Football. Football seasons are short, which makes almost every game feel important and the emotions of each game are heightened which makes the outcome something that is easier to get invested into.
Additionally the season operates on a weekly basis, so it's easier to make games appointment viewing as well as keep up with what else is going on in the sport. It's a lot easier to catch every second of action for you favorite team in football.
Plus it is a sport with a very deep strategy to it that also has periodic breaks in the action to allow for digestion of that strategy, so it can be intellectually stimulating as well, but the sport can also be enjoyed on a base primal level as well. Football can be enjoyable both as a chess match, and as gladiatorial combat.
I love baseball and basketball as well, baseball is a beautiful game that is easy to romanticize (no other sport could spawn this sort of speech), a sport that loves and cherishes its history, a sport with an obsession with statistics, and I love spending a beautiful summer afternoon at the ballpark. And basketball is absolutely exhilarating, it's incredible pace makes the runs more exciting as they grow, and a well timed three can cause the crowd to explode, the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament is possibly the best 4 day stretch on the American sports calendar, if I ever have to get elective surgery I want my recovery to coincide with those 4 days.
But you only get one number 1, and my number 1 is Football.
MatthewRebel@reddit
Baseball. The rules are simple, and the game is easily to follow.
mbsw1110@reddit
1) Baseball. The one I grew up watching with my grandfather. I think it's the best in-stadium experience, and love that there's no point where a comeback is truly out of reach until 27 outs have been made.
2) Football. The one I grew up watching with my dad. NFL is great, but there's nothing like a CFB gameday tailgate.
3) Basketball. JJ Redick refused to sign my basketball when I was a kid and single-handedly ruined the sport for multiple years for me. (100% serious).
SnarkyFool@reddit
Of the main American ones, baseball is my favorite because being at the park is so much fun.
Probably NFL and NBA after that.
I used to be a huge CFB and CBB fan but NIL has pretty much killed my interest in the actual games. I still like going back to campus for a game every now and then but I'm no longer that invested in the outcome.
I'm not in an NHL city so only get to go to a game every now and then. It's pretty awesome in person but sort of out of sight / out of mind when I'm at home because our local media doesn't spend any time on it.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit

d_class_rugs@reddit
Football > Hockey > Baseball >= Basketball > Soccer.
Football is the Chess of sports imo in terms of strategy and different pieces to play with. Each position group is like its own sporting mini game inside what is the most team dependent of all sports. The violence is a big plus too. Plus the Nfl is on a whole other level with the content and intrigue they pump out outside of the actual games.
Hockey is good because it's like a combination of Basketball and Soccer but much more exciting (violent) and it removes the worst aspect of those sports, which is the flopping, crying and penalties. Plus you sometimes get blessed with a bonus pop up boxing match.
Baseball can be dreadfully boring on tv but i do appreciate how hard it is to reliably hit a 100mph fastball with 40000 people yelling at you. And it's one of the best sports to see live in terms of the stadiums the atmosphere and the pacing. Its more of a social event
I find playoff Basketball exciting but as I mentioned previously... The constant flopping and crying is infuriating and makes me not want to support those people.

NFL - Our “group” of football fans bought the Red Zone package to watch parts of every game. It’s fun watching it, even if neither team is my favorite. Baseball- but only if I care about one of the teams playing. Otherwise it’s pretty much watching a game of catch.
I actually like Hockey more than basketball. With the average football player being like 7 feet tall, I don’t see the challenge.
thelordstrum@reddit
Baseball, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Home field actually matters (outfields are different by ballpark), and every batter has to wait their turn so there's a level of equality there that doesn't exist in other sports (you can give the ball to LeBron all day, or pass to Gronk every play, but Judge only comes up 1/9 times).
Also just like the nuances of pitching.

NFL is amazing on TV and IMHO the best sport to watch on a screen. Because of that it's the sport I follow the most and really know teams/players/rules for... Now all that said, Hockey is an absolute blast to watch in person. I don't follow the sport and have a rudimentary at best understanding of the fine points of the rules and don't really know the teams very well, but if I am given Hockey tickets, you can bet your ass I'm going and enjoying the hell out of it.
PeterNippelstein@reddit
Interesting, id put NFL as one of the worst sports to watch on TV because its almost all commercials, and the action is so sporadic that most of the time youre just waiting for the next play to happen. That and also how teams will game out the clock and downs. Its very unsatisfying to me, whereas soccer its constant action with little to no ads interrupting the match, though thats not exactly an American sport. I'd put basketball and hockey above the others as far as being a spectator, but I still dont enjoy them enough to be a fan or actually watch them, id rather just stick with European football.
pfmason@reddit
I see a lot of hockey posts on here and there are a lot of die hard for sure but in terms of popularity it ranks 5th in the US behind soccer.
InterPunct@reddit
Lacrosse. It's not only legitimately the first truly American sport, it's awesome to watch.
PeterNippelstein@reddit
Tbh I dont enjoy any of them, mostly because of their start/stop nature and how many commercials you have to sit through. Like football for example there might be maybe 10 seconds of action, but then its another minute or so of players just walking around catching their breath, or even worse an ad break. It seems like the majority of the game is just waiting for the next play to happen. The only sports I actually watch are soccer (international football), skateboarding, and rock climbing/bouldering. Nothing else really interests me enough to actually sit down and watch it.
kirstynloftus@reddit
Honestly, it depends on how my team is doing. Currently, I’d say football > baseball > soccer > basketball > hockey (even though soccer isn’t huge here). I tend to follow football and baseball pretty closely no matter what, though, but the other three depends on the team’s performance.

It’s one of the last things in Americana that I still feel romantic about. It’s a batshit wacky game where literally anything can, and eventually will, happen. Unique in its gameplay and tactics, historically marred with various controversies and scandals, playoff baseball is the most electric postseason we have going, and ballpark atmosphere in October is second to none.

Basketball. It’s the one I grew up playing and following the most so some of it is familiarity.
If I was going to make a case for it beyond that - I think it’s unique compared to other team sports in the way that it’s so focused on individuals and I like that. Because it’s 5 on 5 and all players play offense and defense, that’s just kind of the nature of the sport. Some people dislike that about it and view players as selfish and really emphasize that teams who pass more are playing “the right way”, but to me what’s cool about basketball is that it isn’t necessarily always the right way. Great teamwork is very fun to watch, but so are great individual talents. In basketball more than any other sport individual talents are given a chance to just completely control the game if they’re capable of it. Watching MJ or Kobe or any other truly great scorer just win the game almost by themselves is something that has always been very exciting and fun to watch for me

Depends on the season. I’ve been really into baseball the last few years. Football has honestly been boring. But I’m a Colts fan and a Dodgers fan so… yknow. I don’t like basketball at all. I just can’t get into it. I’ve tried. I’ll keep trying. But it just doesn’t do it for me.
Hockey is dope though. Ducks fan and they suck, but I live in Colorado so I just pretend to be an Avalanche fan during the playoffs. I just like watching sports.
Defiant_Ingenuity_55@reddit
Baseball. It is a beautiful game and requires a so many skills. That’s why players who can do it all are called 5 tool players. It’s dynamic. It’s one of the sports that isn’t just putting some kind of ball in one specific place or past one line.

Number one is football, both pro and college. Baseball is a very close second. I like NCAA hockey and basketball but I don't really follow the NHL or NBA. Couldn't possibly care less about soccer at any level.
Own-Distribution-193@reddit
Agree about soccer and a few other things but don’t discount the Stanley Cup Playoffs ANY year because it’s next level stuff, especially since you clearly know NCAA Hockey! True World class, World participants giving their all. It’s the best. (And I’m an American who can’t skate!)

In my case it's a tie between the Phillies and the Eagles. I don't follow any of the other teams in those two sports or any other sports in any way. I have to be emotionally invested to watch sports.

Basketball - specifically college basketball. I got hooked on it when I was a kid and my dad had season tickets to his Alma Mater (which later became my Alma Mater). It probably helped that they were one of the best teams in the country at the time (Marquette University in the 1970s).

Baseball. I inherited the Mets fandom from my father. It's a beautiful game. I love that it's a long season with games nearly every day. Even when my team is terrible, and I'm a Mets fan so that's a lot, it's still fun to watch.
I tried to like football when I was married because my ex was obsessed, but just could not get into it. Games were so infrequent and the actual gameplay seemed really short.
I'm starting to get into basketball. I teach 6th grade and my students are a bit basketball crazy. I don't have team yet though. I do like to troll them by saying Jordan is better than their beloved LeBron though! (I honestly have no idea, it's just funny)
Also, not American but I am super into F1 racing.
JimBones31@reddit
Minor League baseball or Major League Soccer. The games are a blast, casual and way more affordable.
old_gold_mountain@reddit
I love baseball because my mother loved baseball and brought the family to games every year. So I've been to a Giants game every season since 1992 (except the 2020 "season" for obvious reasons).
I still love it today in part because it's my comfort zone, but also I love the pacing. People complain baseball is too slow and boring, but I find it to be an oasis in the hellscape dystopian attention economy.
Dai-The-Flu-@reddit
What makes baseball so great is the game day experience at the stadium. Compared to NHL, NBA, and especially NFL games, it’s much cheaper for a family to go to a baseball game.
DC5513@reddit
I like the romance of baseball, and it’s nice to have on in the background occasionally. But I can’t actually sit and watch more than a couple of innings. I follow college football slightly just to check in on my school. But really I just watch premier league football.

Def. hockey. Requires more skill than all the other big pro sports and they get paid the least. Also, hockey players aren't showboating glory whores.
Sad-Umpire6000@reddit
Football in the fall and winter, baseball in spring and summer. It’s basically a tie for me.
Neither one is as much fun to watch as they used to be. Football because of the emphasis on the passing game and the rule changes to protect the players. I get it about brain injuries, but just saying as a fan that old school was more exciting and fun. I played in high school (OL/LB) and every Sunday in the fall, am honestly thankful that I wasn’t big enough or good enough to go onward in the sport. The way I played, I’d be a poster child for CTE, and would probably have Platinum status at the surgeon’s office. Back then, your worth as a player was measured in no small part by how badly dinged up your helmet was. No stick marks meant you were weak.
Baseball because of the DH and video review. Pitchers having to hit adds a dimension to the game that isn’t there when you replace him with a slugger. As for video review, the human factor is part of the game - ump blows a call, manager argues, gets run, gets his money’s worth. The traditions of baseball make (made) it great, and it’s sad to see them go away.

Dai-The-Flu-@reddit
I’m probably gonna go with baseball as my favorite American sport. That is one I used to play and the first team I was ever a fan of was the New York Mets. I grew up just a few miles down the road from Shea Stadium and grew up going to games with my father and late grandfather, of playing little league throughout my childhood.
If we’re going with leagues, I like the NFL the best. I’m a bigger Mets fan than Jets fan, but I watch a lot more football than baseball. Every week is filled with must watch games. Even though the Jets are usually out of playoff contention by mid-October, the league overall is still entertaining enough to keep me engaged.
That being said, I like soccer better than both football and baseball. Maybe it’s because I come from a family of European immigrants and grew up around it, but it’s definitely my favorite. I just love the global aspect and how it unites the world. I also like the simplicity of the game, the fan culture, the rich history, and the underdog status of soccer in America.

Baseball growing up-had a small radio under my pillow. Would pick up late night games, in particular the Pirates. I lived in Philadelphia. About the only two sports I watch are soccer and hockey.
If I had to rank the 3 sports you listed:
Basketball. Quickest sport of the 3. Less standing around. Near constant action.
Football. Was easily my favorite sport growing up. Now it just bores me. Games take forever. Too much downtime.
Baseball. Only sport in which I used to play where I quit playing because it was so boring. Haven't actually paid attention to a baseball game since shortly after the Sosa/McGwire home run race (and my brother-in-law works for a minor league team.

Tennis: Another one I love but isn’t as big here. I like to engage whenever i can find it on.
Basketball: My least favorite professional American sport, has not been fun or exciting since the mid 2000s. It’s due for a shakeup. College basketball is a lot better at least.

American Football.
I feel like it has the best pacing, great strategy and mental challenge, and entertaining physicality.
The pacing is a big one. It is a really exciting sport, but also one you don't need to give your full attention to. Soccer and hockey are constantly moving, but look away for a second and you might miss the ONE score that happens all game. You can have a zero to zero draw and it is still considered an exciting game. Basketball is just constant scoring and movement. Baseball is... baseball. But football there is generally a steady build up until the touchdown, watching as teams slowly make their way closer and closer to the goal. Or there is a big, exciting, breakout play. Usually there are several of those plays per game, each of great consequence. So it is easy to be glued to a game on the edge of your seat, but also I can tune out for a bit if I want. It's the perfect sport to watch while doing light office work, which I often do.
But this stop and start also means a lot of strategy goes into it. It is, in a real way, turn based strategy. You anticipate your opponents moves, consider your players strengths vs their players strengths, come up with a plan, then execute. But also the players have to be ready to adjust and improvise.
The physicality is just beautiful to me. Watching a RB run through a hole perfectly created by the line. A long spiraling pass with an incredible jumping catch. And, yes, as much as I think safety needs to be a continuing focus and compromises need to be made, the tackles are often fun to watch as well.
I do enjoy watching hockey, because I think the physicality of the game is fun and the sound of hockey might be the best sports ASMR. I like going to baseball games with friends, because the vibes are fun. I'll watch a soccer or basketball match if I'm bored and I care about the teams. But none of them are as exciting to me aa gridiron (or Canadian) football.
