When did you go on your first date?

I grew up in a culture where "dating" really wasn't a thing until college or later. When was your first date, Americans?
Ancient0wl@reddit
2004, age 16.
graciemose@reddit
when I was 18 or 19 in my first year of college
Blutrumpeter@reddit
Don't think reddit is a good place to ask this question since a lot of chronically online people are socially awkward but I didn't start properly dating until I was 19 and had a car but most dating starts in the teenage years. I'd had flings with girls before that just never went outside of school with a girl romantically
SignificantApricot69@reddit
19, almost everyone I knew had been on dates or had a GF before then.

The week after I turned 15
famousanonamos@reddit
My first date was going to the movies. But "dating" in high school didn't really involve a lot of actually dates. You were boyfriend and girlfriend and hung out at school, and if you had cool parents you hung out at each other's houses or went to parties or school dances. Maybe you'd go get food or go to the movies sometimes, but a lot of my "dates" were groups of friends doing stuff together and some of us were dating each other.
ccroy2001@reddit
Junior High? Ours was grades 7 to 9 and I was in the 9th grade. We had a 9th grade prom. I think my friends pressure me to ask a girl. I was so nervous and surprised when she said yes. It wasn't a good date. I ended up talking to someone else's date at the dinner after the date b/c we had similar sense of humor and just chatted away the evening to the chagrin of our respective dates.
I was probably 30 before I dated for romance and failed there for a multitude of reasons.
So I am 60 and have been happy on my own (as long as I have a cat).
AnitaIvanaMartini@reddit
I think I was 14

Freshman year of college !! I had a “boyfriend” in highschool if you want to call it that. We dated for 2 months, barely talked to eachother in public, just weird😂😭

in the gay community it's very common and normal for people to start later because they might not have had earlier opportunities to be out or to be around enough people who were, to meet someone you would date.
ThePurityPixel@reddit
I'm gonna take "dating" to imply "with the intention of potentially entering a long-term relationship," which is something I never understood doing before one is old enough to marry.
So I didn't begin dating till college.
If one means "dating" to include fun little flirty one-on-one get-togethers, I honestly don't even recall.
MmmIceCreamSoBAD@reddit
I 'dated' a girl when I was in seventh grade (I guess I was like 12), she ended up breaking up with me through a friend, we didn't hang out enough at lunch/recess.
My first real dating experience was at 16 though, my first and only girlfriend that lasted until after we graduated.
squarebodynewb@reddit
Recess? 7th grade?
MmmIceCreamSoBAD@reddit
Is that not normal? We had it through eighth grade in my grade school in Illinois
LunarVolcano@reddit
Only through 5th in upstate NY
squarebodynewb@reddit
Where in Illinois? My 3rd and 4th schools were in Fairview Hieghts and Mascoutah.
MmmIceCreamSoBAD@reddit
Collinsville (a private Lutheran school) so just down the road from Fairview Heights
squarebodynewb@reddit
Yup. Maybe bc lutheran school then??
I livee in Cville for a time. On south clinton under the ketchup bottle. And my great grandma lived downtown, her house is now a statefarm office i think, across from dominos pizza near the high school.
squarebodynewb@reddit
I went to 4 dif middle schools(military) 1st school for 6 and part of 7. Moved across town for 2nd for part of 7, changed states for 3rd for part of 7 and part of 8, moved cities for 4th for rest of 8 and part of 9(strange school system rhat 10-12 waa HS) Not a single one had "recess".
MmmIceCreamSoBAD@reddit
Probably a state thing then since virtually all education stuff is handled at a state/local level. Looking it up online, Illinois recommends it through 8th grade though its only mandatory through sixth. I also went to a Lutheran grade school so that might've changed things as well.
And yeah it stopped for ninth grade where we just had grown up recess aka 'gym'
chorpinecherisher@reddit
it stopped at 5th grade in california

I was 18, I think. Stereotypical dinner and a movie. Then we hung out on swings at a nearby park talking for like 2 hours. Completely unplanned and we didn't describe it as a date until a few months later when one of us finally asked if we were dating or not.

Real date i would say was when I was 17 and the "shut up our parents" one was in middle school. Probably around 2007 so that would've been about 13.
shelwood46@reddit
Dating wasn't part of my culture either, and have always lived in America. You'd do group hangouts and then maybe solo hangouts, not actual formal dates. I'm not sure I've ever been on a classical "date", maybe when I was single for a bit when I was 45? I certainly never did dates with the guys I was actually seeing long-term, we just did stuff or had meals.

DameWhen@reddit
Age 16, but I didn't see it as "dating to marry". It was more like "practice".
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
I was 16 too and I didn't even see it as "practice", I just saw it as an opportunity to spend quality time with the girl I liked
DameWhen@reddit
Well, we were already friends, so we were already spending time together.
I broke up with him when he graduated because it was kind of like, "You don't want to have this chick from your highschool holding you back. Let's just go back to being friends, no harm."
The he ended the friendship and accused me of cheating.
Kind of wish he had been looking at the whole thing a little closer to hiw you were. Maybe the friendship could've been salvaged?
Either way, there's no way dating before college should ever be serious, so we're in agreement there.

My first "date" was when I was 16. It was with a friend and we decided towards the end/waiting for her mom to pick her up that "yeah that was a date!". That was my first "relationship".
My first real date was at 18 and it was quite possibly the worst first date I could imagine without assault being in the mix. Only had two more dates after that, one of which went nowhere and the other did involve assault.
My first real relationship wasn't until I was 24 and we're now 3 years in. Honestly wouldn't change a thing about it.

A couple of years ago, at age 27. I wasn't born in the US, moved here after living somewhere. Where I was born, people don't go on dates. Well they do go on dinner dates etc but after they're already in a relationship. But they don't go on "exploratory dates" to "interview" the other person. They just see someone they like, ask her out, then she can say yes or no. If she says yes, they start a relationship and see where it goes. I experienced the idea of going on dates before you're in a relationship after I immigrated here, and in my late 20s.

College, in my early 20s. I never get approached by strangers and none of my friends has ever confessed feelings for me. Background-Passion50@reddit
We didn’t so much go on a first date as we had already kind of been dating or did the process very backwards. I mentioned this when someone in another board ask when you started to become attracted to girls so let me explain. I went to kindergarten at a time when it was half days and my grandma was best friends with a girl in my classes grandma so we grew up together as they took turns taking us home and we would often spend the afternoon to evening at one house or the other. Naturally as boys and girls do we started to become attracted to one another as we developed and got older. So by 8th grade we were dating and experimenting after all we’d already heard about the birds and bees and now we wanted to experiment with those feelings so all of our firsts were with eachother. By high school we started to drift apart and by Junior year we stopped talking to eachother entirely. She’s now married to a hedge fund manager last I heard and I’m married to a German girl I met while serving overseas.

For me, it depends on what counts. In high school, I had a brief relationship with a girl who lived like an hour's drive away, but it was before I could drive, so I don't think we ever had a real date. Then my first "real" relationship was also long-distance, and it started online, so by the time we had a date, we were already in a relationship. That lasted a few years, followed by a multi-year dry spell. Then I finally went the more conventional route and got a date via online dating. I must have been like 26 or 27 then.

My first date was on the sly and unplanned. I was 18 and i worked evenings after school. Some days later than others. There was a female coworker who liked me. her parents were out of town. she was supposed to call them when she got home from work. we both decided to call our parents from work and tell them we had to work all night because somebody called in sick. And then we went to a movie together, the late show, after our shift ended. She was 2 years younger than me and they wouldnt let her in the movie theater because it was an R rated film. There was no PG film showing for the late show.
Now we had a problem. I couldnt go home yet because i told my parents i was at work. She decided i should go home with her since she had the house to herself. And that was my first date. Unsupervised, unchaperoned, alone with a 16 year old girl all night long in her bedroom. prior to that night i had never even kissed a girl or even held hands.

My first real date was 8th grade (around age 13). His mom drove us to see a movie. But the year before I "dated" someone, which was just talking and saying we were boyfriend/girlfriend, we didn't actually go on any dates.
