Why the hell doesn’t my cool fancy new modular power supply work?

Hello lovelies for the first time in my life I’m upgrading my power supply from a 500W to 850W since this weekend I upgraded to a RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5 5600. All was well and I actually enjoyed some games with the 500W but for some reason when I swapped today my PC would not show any signs of life, just a click in the PSU when i press the power button, I swapped back to the old PSU and funnily enough everything seems to be working perfectly, or at least the bloody thing turns on.
Any idea what I’m missing? Did I receive a dead cool fancy new modular power supply? I basically used the same cable configuration as my old one
Motherboard is an A230M-A Pro and new PSU is corsair MWE 850 V2 if that helps?
Thanks :)

By this do you mean you used the cables from the old PSU on your new one? Or just plugged everything in the same way?

Plugged them in the exact same way!

Paperclip test or PSU tester are your next step then, or testing on another motherboard.

You move the voltage to 220v on the back?

Mate those haven't existed since like the late 2000s. ATX standard PSUs do that automatically now.

Not too sure what you mean, there’s only an on/off switch on the power supply

Used to be on some PSU there was a 120v/220v switch on the back of the PSU. Do NOT switch it unless you know what you're line voltage is.
Double check your cabling connections when you install the new PSU AND use the old ( working cables? ) if poosible.
Make sure you turned the new PSU ON ( it's easy to miss ).
It is possible you have a dud PSU. It happens.
Good Luck

Did you remember to plug in the CPU power as well as the 24pin? Did you plug in gpu cables? It sounds like you must have missed a cable either on the psu or hardware side. Did you try again after you had the old one reconnected and working?

Definitely plugged everything in and double triple checked. Gonna give it another shot tomorrow, but i’m guessing cooler master might have sent me some dodgy gear, some Amazon reviews for the same PSU say it was DOA

Typically when the power supply dies immediately like that (with the click/slight beep) means that one of the power connected is somehow shorted. I have had it do that from a bad usb device (shorted internally), from a power adapter melting its wires (defective) and shorting, and from screwing up and putting a standoff in the wrong location. If modular, disconnected all but MB + MBextra and remove all cards and retest (turn on and if it stays on turn it off immediately and continue). Add something and retest, and when you get a failure then something with that cable. On mine I added back in the module molex/sata power connectors until it stopped working and then traced and examined that cable until I saw the burned wires. My "defective" cable was a molex to sata cable and testing determined the wires used in the cable appear to be steel(magnetic) and not copper and high resistance(.6ohm/12inwire).

Interesting, you might be right. I was worried I fried my components when I pressed the power button and nothing happened but as far as I l can tell everything is working with my old PSU back in. I’ll give a shot narrowing down if there might be something up with one or more of the cables tomorrow, for now I am just relieved I didn’t kill my MB or something lol. Thanks!

(note i didn’t actually use the same cables, i know that is a no no)
