What is your practical “dream car”?
Posted by theonerr4rf@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 344 comments
Everyone wants a t bucket, a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, etc. those are normal dream cars, I want to know about the ones you want because they are practical. For example, (dream fleet) Id love a first gen Honda crv, and an Australian for falcon ba and lastly a third gen Prius
The third gen Prius looks good and is a hybrid, so great daily
The crv can be modded and used as a utility vehicle/fun trails vehicle
The falcon is a ute, its good for hauling and for crusing

Durango Hellcat. family hauler with way too much power.
titsmuhgeee@reddit
I own two.
First is my 2004 Mustang GT that I've owned since 2008. Extremely reliable, fun, and great looking. Cheap to operate/register/insure, and just gets the job done. I'd love for it to be a Cobra, but I love it for what it is. In 17 years of ownership, the only thing I've ever had to replace was the fuel pump. It's practical, because I've been DDing it for almost three weeks since my wife's Explorer has been in the shop and she took my F-150. It can haul the family, and is the "next man up" vehicle in our lineup.
I've recently picked up a 1949 International L-112 as a restoration project. The old man I bought it from did 80% of the frame off restoration, leaving only the final assembly and paint/bodywork. It's been a really fun "nights and weekends" project, and I'm really looking forward to having it done. It's be practical, as I fully intend to use it as a truck is meant to be used, and not be some car show princess. I've also really enjoyed having a fun project to work on rather than sitting and watching netflix and scrolling my phone until bedtime after the kids are down.
Anyways, for my phase of life, I can't ask for much more.

I mean, a V10 M5 Touring is very practical. If it has to be somewhat regular, I think a G31 540i Touring, Volvo V90 T8 or similar large estate car with a decent engine would be my go to. I could never own a car purely for practicality, it has to have something else for me to want it. For the 5 series and V90 it’s the quiet, comfortable premium driving experience that I find atractive. Something like a Passat or Skoda superb is not something I want, but a necessity.

I've always tried to buy cars based on need and economy. Our 09 Prius still runs with a bit over 200k miles and I still get 45 plus MPG. It's been the most reliable car we've ever owned. Next up is our 03 Ram 3500 Cummins diesel with a 6 speed stick. We bought this one to tow our camper and haul whatever we needed to. It's been reliable and I'm not going to tell you how good it is on fuel mileage because you will think I'm a liar. It tows a large rv with ease. This one is for sale. We're almost 70 and our towing a camper days are over. Our newest dream car is a mini van It's on 24 Odyssey. It hauls 8 people in comfort and was necessary for when our grandchildren come to visit. We had a 3 row suv and it was horrible compared to the minivan. We have room for luggage It's easy to get in and out of, the sliding doors rock, it's very quiet, and I did tell you how comfortable it is. I'm talking no sore spots after a 10 hour day behind the wheel. We buy our vehicles new, drive them easy, maintain them, keep them clean, and sometimes keep them for over 20 years. No car payment is a wonderful thing. Take care of your ride and it will last many years. Don't buy a car that isn't exactly what you want so you will want to take care of it and won't mind driving it for 20 years or more. If you know anyone interested in a wonderful one owner truck, let me know.

I would pay an unreasonable amount of money to find a rust-free Mazda Protege5 with a manual transmission in good condition. The one that I had was my favourite car that I've ever owned. 130hp FWD station wagon that was ridiculously fun to drive, eminently practical and got fantastic mileage.
applesauceporkchop@reddit
Such a good looking car
Steelringin@reddit
They really are. I'm so not a fan of the crossover craze. Low slung station wagons look sooooooo much better. My Protege5 saw many Alberta winters. Used to drive it from Calgary to Ft McMurray (9+ hrs one way) in the dead of winter and never felt like I needed more ground clearance.
porchprovider@reddit
Ive got an Acura TSX wagon. It is my dream car. Whenever I fantasize about winning Powerball, I’m gonna get a GT3rs, and some other insane cars. I’m also for sure gonna keep my wagon.
Steelringin@reddit
I had no idea that these even existed. I'm down!
Ponklemoose@reddit
That’s kind of Mazda’s thing. I had a Mazada5 (a mini-mini van) that was actually fun to drive and could be had with a stick.
bandley3@reddit
I have a Mazda5 with the rare 6MT and will not part with it. For my reasonable dream car I’d just add another minivan, namely a 1986 VW Vanagon Westfalia.
bigbabyjesus97@reddit
These cars were way more fun to drive than they deserve to be. My parents owned a fit and a matrix gt that were the same thing. They almost bought a Mazda 5. I convinced them not to. I found them a 2008 jdm accord type s with a manual and 45k km for 12k that they got 2 years ago. They have that car. Plus my mom, who used to race cars in the 70s, loves how when she parks it everyone is shocked to see a 72 year old lady driving it. I've also owned a few vws. 1957, 1963, 1962 beetle. 1969 minibus 1971 westfalia. 1976 squareback. I agree on the vw vans. The 72 I still miss.
WildKarrdesEmporium@reddit
Upgrade your dream and look up the Mazdaspeed Protege.
Effective-Addition38@reddit
Hooooooooly shit my first car was a ‘94 Protege 5-speed. It’s different from the Progete5, I know, but I sure miss that car. It was running fine when I got rid of it, but my brother sort of caught the interior on fire a little (a lot) and it was deemed a total loss. Got $500 for it on trade for an ‘02 Cougar. Should have fixed the Mazda.

Growing up in Nova Scotia I saw a lot of these rust away. I'm visiting Oregon right now and I've seen half a dozen rust free examples driving around or in parking lots.
I've even seen a few rust free Geo Metros driving around. What a fun vacation I'm having eh?
PositiveAtmosphere13@reddit
In the PNW roads weren't salted in the snow. Because a snow day never lasted more than a day or two. The cost benefit wasn't worth it. So cars didn't rust out.
Until that one winter when the snow lasted for almost a week. Seattle was crippled. The mayor lost reelection because he didn't order the roads salted. Even though it wasn't SDOT policy, only sand was spread, and there wasn't any road salt even if he wanted to.
Now city politicians don't want to take that chance and they salt the roads at any hint of snow. Cars are no longer going to go rust free.
advanttage@reddit
So you're saying I should scoop up the Geo's quickly!

it would be far better to get anything mazda3 based... i mean everything in that car is better... speaking as a former protege owner myself... terrible brakes, terrible build quality, not particularly safe and absurdly slow... i bought a 2009 mazda3 after and it was just amazing how much better in every way the subsequent generation was
heyitismeurdad@reddit
Fwiw my 3rd gen mazda3 continues to suprise me with how well it handles. Plus it's got all the modern comforts I love it as a daily. They came in manual too

windmill09@reddit
I love my Lexus RCF. It's my reliable, comfy, street supercar. Its a luxury drift rocket that you can bang off the rev limiter and is still virtually indestructible. Its easy to drift. The rear end loses traction very progressively. It's dramatic going straight with the V8 roaring in mid revs, screaming in high revs, and tires chirping on gear shifts. The torque vectoring diff pushes you into the turn which is a crazy feeling. Shifts are fast when you're hammering it. It does all this while having very low NVH for the highway. People ragged on it for its weight, but it's really not an issue as a road car. Having driven supercars on the track, you will only see the advantage of a supercar on a track making cars like the RCF a practical supercar. Of course it doesnt come with the supercar hotel valet treatment though.

TheReal-Chris@reddit
I have a 19 sti. It’s sad they stopped making the Evo, I loved it as well and probably would have got that instead if it was possible to find one. But t made Subaru complacent to not improve the engine. Other than the new one which isn’t even a sti they haven’t changed the engine in so many years. It’s dated. Competition makes for better cars. Mustang and Camaro were the American version of that. They were forced to improve each other.

I think a not too crazy “dream” garage is a: Honda s2000, e92 m3, and a m550. All used would equal about $100k.
But if you are a higher income earner, I’d skip buying 1 Ferrari or lambo. Been there, done that. I like having multiple fun cars. My current garage is a 997.2 S 911, CT5V BW, 718 spyder, and an x7 m60.

Any sport wagon. Honestly i wish someone would make q modern Volvo v70, give me 6000lbs towing, a flat rear end, a roof rack, and a plugin hybrid. I don't want it lifted, normal sedan height or even a tiny bit lower. Adaptive cruise, lane keeping (or better), comfort and sport suspension modes, cheap to buy (approx 25k new), cheap to own (basically just do oil changes every 3k to 5k, transmission fluid every 60k, brakes and tires), wireless android auto, cloth seats no need for heating or ventilation, pretty basic interior is just fine.
The current v6 is close, minus the price and towing.

A friend of mine had a first generation 50's vintage Corvette. It was his dream car.
When he retired. His dream was to drive the Vette down Route 66, like the old TV show. He lived in Seattle, so the trip was going to be a triangle. Seattle to Chicago to LA, then up the West Coast home. A long trip. It was do it now before he was too old.
He took the Vette to a Corvette specialist too get it ready for the trip. He got mad and thought the specialist was ripping him off for a car that ran perfectly fine.
The mechanic said, yes, your car does run fine for a Sunday drive never more than ten miles from home. But to have a reliable car for the trip you want to do, you need a lot of work. Not to mention the back full of spare parts. It's one thing to get your hands on vintage parts in the city. It's another when you're waiting for parts in some gas station hundreds of miles from anywhere. (I think I watch too many scary movies)
(Instead of gas station I almost said Paducah Vill. Until goggle told me it's a real place. Not just once but twice. I didn't want to offend anyone. I sure they are very nice places.)

We already have several of them. My favorite is the old VW Beetle. It is small and nimble, I can fix everything myself with basic tools, and if I take out the passenger seats (which takes less than a minute) we can fit surprisingly many things inside it. Another one is the W123 Mercedes. It is incredibly solid and unkillable. The lady in the house has a VW T3. She also has a Toyota Yaris Verso. It is shorter than a Beetle, but you can fit a washer and dryer inside of it, and there are still lots of space left.
Of dream cars I have not owned yet the most practical one is probably the Rambler American station wagon. It has modest proportions, seats 6 people, has a large cargo space, has a very solid engine, and it gets surprisingly good mileage.

I would love a modern take on the chicken tax truck, aka the compact import pickup. Just barely big enough to fit me and a passenger or two, large enough bed to fit some mountain bikes and maybe some camp stuff, 4WD, stick shift, and not filled with a bunch of unnecessary tech. Mechanically simple, reliable, and easy to fix and decent gas mileage, and an affordable price tag. The Ford Maverick comes close, but they haven't been around long enough to prove long term reliability yet. The Tacoma is spiritually the heir of those trucks, but they've gotten to the point they're larger than a first gen Tundra and can run over $50k for some builds.
