Is 80 degrees too much?

So, i have a MSI pre-assemblated desktop pc mounting 3060 12gb, 32gb RAM and an i5 11400F, everything air cooled. When I play beamNG (my main game) (and other intensive games), the cpu goes up to 80 degrees and the system is like making the cpu work less to keep the cpu under that temperature. In details the boost frequency is like 4.2ghz and the cpu at 80°C goes to 3.6-3.7ghz The question is: Should I change thermal paste or I'm just worrying about nothing?

Always check under the heatsink for plastic if you didn't take it off yourself.

i bought the pc in a shop where it was working as showcase. So no plastic

Lol so “I have not checked” is the answer. If you have temp issues, check your cooler and your paste. You’re looking for people to tell you that you don’t have to. But you have to.

The 11400F has a thermal limit of 100°C, so it shouldn't be down-clocking itself. Maybe the manufacturer changed clocks in bios? What cooler do you have?

I dont know... Theres no mamufacturer on top. I have to disassemble it and see ehats written under, or theres another method?

Mainly what type of cooler. If it's a proper tower with 120mm fan then it should be plenty enough, but lots of prebuilts use small intel stock coolers.
I've seen cases where some manufacturers purposefully downclock the CPU because they don't use sufficient cooling, or they don't have good enough VRMs.

So I've just watched Hardware Canucks review of the 11400 and it seems the chip doesn't necessarily boost on stock settings, there is something called Multi Core Enhancement in the bios of their ASUS board, which unlocks the package power to actually hit that 4,2ghz speed. Without it on the chip is limited to 65w and doesn't boost properly.
I'd bet that's case with your system. You'd have to look into your bios, find the equivalent setting and turn it on. But make sure your motherboard and cooler can actually handle the increased load.

Well, all games runs good, mine was just a question.

The behavior is certainly a bit weird, 80°C is far from dangerous operating temperature so there's no reason it should clock so low if it has enough power and there aren't any extra parameters set.
It's probably leaving some performance on the table, but if you don't mind you can leave it as is.

It's a stock cooler, like 100mm (im not sure) , and another detail: the game doesnt get slow, but Ive set the cpu performance to 100% of speed (4.4ghz), but at that temperature it goes to 3.6ghz to prevent going over 80 degrees, so I had this question if it was normal or a problem of something
LorkieBorkie@reddit
Yeah that's strange, 80°C is not ideal but safe operating temperature, no reason to clock so low.

Do you have a laptop stand? Not even a cooling pad, just lifting it off a little bit can be a gamechanger.

I have a desktop, not a laptop.
