I have some jobs that were so random and long ago I can totally lie about how long I worked there and how awesome I was, either because the business is gone or because they’ve gone thru 20 mgt changes.
My husband works for the biggest background screen company in the US. There are government databases that show employment records in perpetuity.
If someone claims to have worked at TRU, and he can't find them in the database, his next step is to request a W-2 to prove it. If this is not provided, then the candidate is flagged as having presented falsified credentials.
You should have looked it up before replying. It's called The Work Number and it's basically like a credit report for your work history - including dates and salaries. And it can and should absolutely be frozen.
It being frozen only stops people who shouldn't be able to from accessing or modifying it, it does not stop legitimate inquiries from credit checks or background companies
Nah im good. If someone uses an acronym without any context it's not my job to look it up before replying. You may be right that it would prevent anyone (including an employer) from looking at credit file even if you dont apply for credit. What i read said it didnt affect people from viewing it, only making changes.
I dont know that I'd say a pretty good chance, but there certainly is a chance. And some employers will still look for proof. My current job was adamant about verifying employment and my education history so they wanted paystubs, W2, etc. if theyre a legit background check you'll need to substantiate it with SOMETHING before they hire you. That said, as old as Radio Shack is I'm not sure anyone's checking that far back
This is correct. I have a defunct company I worked for for close to 10 years,so it's a good portion of work history. Since there's no one to call for work verification, I've had to supply my w2s for each year as verification of employment.
Yep. Lots of big companies use Equifax background checks. I got the report when I took my current job and it included every bit of income I ever received (even going back to a part time high school job).
I remember lawnmowers, action figures, and jewelry. It was like a weird sort of general store that didn’t have the vastness of Wal-Mart or the polish of Target.
I've worked at like maybe 4 or 5 stores that went out of business in one way or another pretty soon after I left. Having a plausible reason not to list anyone as references when you leave under less-than-ideal circumstances is kinda clutch. As long as you have at least three people who will say nice things about you from somewhere relatively recent. So maybe don't burn all your bridges.
I think I might had a unique experience working at a RadioShack. I had a good manager, good coworkers and generally liked the job. We didn’t work too hard and I still was making something like $14/hr in commission and spiffs.
RadioShack was a shit hole. I worked at one in Denver for about a year in 2008-09. I worked with a guy who had been with RadioShack for 14 YEARS! He failed to sell two cell phone contracts one week and they fired him. I was also robbed at gunpoint once, and they had a therapist come into the store to talk to us. We talked in the back room as other employees came in and out for merchandise.
I mean I was head cashier at Kmart. Fired for basically the same thing (this was around the time they got REAL pushy about those Kmart shopper cards). Six months later that particular store shut down completely
Good question, mostly didn't give a fuck. I got promoted to manager while my mom was in hospice, she passed a few months later, then over the next year, my mother in law died, and my wife left me. So yeah zero fucks were given, let my employees goof off, we all watched tv together most days because it was so slow, and one of the was a stoner who I never gave a fuck about him getting high on breaks.
I was also more like a buddy to my employees than a boss, which never works out.
Then towards the end after the wife left I went to a bar after close almost every night, all in all not a high point of my life.
The official line would then be: "I was going through a very difficult time with multiple family deaths and a divorce. Unfortunately, the store's sales goals suffered as a result."
I’m holding back my urge to go on a tirade about predatory VC firms and their relentless enshittification and destruction of brands in exchange for short term looting.
You’re probably not wrong, but that’s a hell of a lot of resources to devote to confirming someone worked at Toy’s R Us.
That being said, I started a job at a very big company a couple of years ago. They showed me a side by side of every role I put on my resume and what they found when they researched it (timeframe & job title). Same for my education background. Not sure what sources they used but it was pretty damn accurate.
Pretty much my entire working life I've had to do the supplemental background check every time I apply for a corporate job.
It really sucks too because someone with an extremely similar name as me lived in the same small college town just before me, did a ton of coke and got a rap sheet, then just left town without paying any debts. And the background check companies do not believe that's not me, even though my name is legally different and I have a clean record.
I did actually work at a Blockbuster. Even though it was a VERY long time ago, I do list it on my resume, as it's the one thing on there that everyone wants to talk about, lol.
Was never a manager, but I loved working at TRU. I worked stocking the boys section at like 4 am then worked on the floor till 12 or 1. I really enjoyed it mostly. Parents and kids could be relentlessly obnoxious if we didn't have the toy they wanted, but overall is was a fun gig.
Met my first long term GF there, got to listen to the radio and eat/ drink coffee while we stocked, played all the videos games, caught the two managers boning in the girls back room, guy who worked in the video game section gave my buddy and I free games. What a time.
I worked for Sears in 2023-2024. They still exist. My favorite part was getting phone calls, saying "Thank you for calling Sears Home Services, how can I help you?" and getting yelled at and accused of being a scammed because "everyone knows Sears went out of business"... well damn, don't tell the person writing my paychecks! 😂 Also, YOU called ME!
Don’t forget Circuit City in that mix. I’ve been a job reference for friends in the past as a store or regional manager, whatever was needed. I’ve never been asked to go into much detail other than dates and would I rehire him/her if given the opportunity when called either.
“Oh, John Smith? Yeah, he was one of our best managers/assistant managers in the X region/store that I oversaw. Was sad to lose him to /.” Use as appropriate.
The Incredible Universe in Sacramento California had their entry street named Tandy Dr. Fry’s bought the location and now it’s just a building advertised as an industrial park for lease.
My sister worked at TRU corporate HQ and got laid off in the bankruptcy. A good bit of their c-suite in the end days came from Radio Shack. Tells you a lot.
I worked at RadioShack corporate, those C-Suite were a symptom of a million different diseases that were infecting retail in general.
We like to dunk on RadioShack for a million reasons (most are very valid) but they were just harbingers of what was and is happening in retail now. RadioShack was always innovative, even when it came to failing.
Their big blunder was going after the whole phone store concept and trying far too late to market to the maker scene. There’s an alternate universe where a smaller but still viable RadioShack stayed around selling hobbyist stuff like electronics components, 3D printers, PC parts, stuff like that. Basically, they could have been mini Microcenters
You're not wrong with regards to entering the maker scene too late. I've got to disagree with you regarding the phone store concept. That worked for quite a while, especially as the smaller hobby stuff moved online.
They should have drastically cut stores and balanced their capital way better. At some points, they were holding onto tens of millions of dollars of dead stock that no one wanted. This is horrible when it comes to things like phone cases and such for every single iPhone, cables from camcorders or phones that no longer function, and TVs that were a generation behind in function and size. All of this obsolete or no hope of even collecting secondary value.
I miss the hell out of Tower. I could by tickets for shows at the counter and only had to pay 14 surcharges to Ticketmaster instead of 114 surcharges to livenation online.
This only works until someone starts asking specific questions or asks for references. Although being able to say "yeah go ahead and call whoever owns them now, I'm sure they remember me specifically." Would be fun in an interview.
I have a friend who put that he was a manager at a Circuit City, because for some reason, he just couldn't get any managerial experience on his resume. The next place he applied, even though he only applied for a regular position, they immediately offered him a manager spot. A decade later, he's literally a regional manager.
I went to the Mall of America the other day for the first time in years and they have some sort of weird Toys R Us branded store there that is a hollow shell of what the stores used to be.
This is my cue to point out Canada STILL HAS TOYS'R'US stores. Our Toys'R'Us had separate ownership, so it was untouched by the shit show that killed the US version.
For many years, I worked at a retail store that was then bought out and merged with a competitor. My store was closed and I was laid off. It was my only full time employer I'd ever had. I then became a stay at home dad for years.
Now looking to get back into the workforce, im sure this fact is hindering me.
Are there any groups you volunteered with or skills you learned/used that would help you? I know a lot of women who were stay-at-home moms for years. They got back into working by getting paid positions for groups they had volunteered with or working at their kids' schools. Several have gone from PTA volunteer or cafeteria worker to paraprofessional at the school.
I did get the opportunity to work at a Toy r Us for a year and while it was no different than working at any other retail joint, it was the atmosphere and products that made it a fun place to work. Getting first dibs on cool toys was fucking awesome.
There are 2 Radio Shacks still going. One in Alaska and one in Mobile, AL. The one in Mobile may be closed now though, its been a while since I went that way
I worked for a photo booth at a tourist attraction that closed years ago. HR departments still want me to list my supervisor, and I'm like: "Last I heard he's in assisted living because 'I love cocaine' was his life's motto and he fried his brain.
I was a manager at Office Depot when the toys r us stores in our area closed and we had sudden surge of management applications. It was surprising how many assistant and store managers those 2 locations had.

dejour@reddit
Is that true? I've looked at my Equifax record and it lists almost none of my actual employers.
your_dads_hot@reddit
It would depend on whether you applied for credit or told your creditors where you worked.
dejour@reddit
I agree. So they may be able to find confirmation of some of the places that you worked. Or maybe a contradiction in the dates.
But there would be a pretty good chance that there would be no direct contradiction to having worked as a manager at Radio Shack.
your_dads_hot@reddit
I dont know that I'd say a pretty good chance, but there certainly is a chance. And some employers will still look for proof. Fair enough. Last time I switched jobs, they asked for a paystub to prove I had worked at my previous employer.

I worked at RadioShack corporate, those C-Suite were a symptom of a million different diseases that were infecting retail in general.
We like to dunk on RadioShack for a million reasons (most are very valid) but they were just harbingers of what was and is happening in retail now. RadioShack was always innovative, even when it came to failing.
pinkocatgirl@reddit
Their big blunder was going after the whole phone store concept and trying far too late to market to the maker scene. There’s an alternate universe where a smaller but still viable RadioShack stayed around selling hobbyist stuff like electronics components, 3D printers, PC parts, stuff like that. Basically, they could have been mini Microcenters
alexbgoode84@reddit

I have a friend who put that he was a manager at a Circuit City, because for some reason, he just couldn't get any managerial experience on his resume. The next place he applied, even though he only applied for a regular position, they immediately offered him a manager spot. A decade later, he's literally a regional manager.
