Paper Pilot Certificate

This was so unexpected today that I wanted to share. I scheduled a first AMEL lesson for a guy this morning. While I'm copying his documents, he hands me a laminated paper certificate. I commented "it's no longer valid." To which he responded "I just did rental checkouts at X and Y and they said they had never seen one of these." Duh. The CFIs there were in elementary school when paper certificates were invalidated. The phase out was over years before they even began flying! I gave him the link to get a new one. And update his address. March 2013, in case you were wondering how long ago... He'll learn to fly the mighty Turbo Seminole, but he'll need a new certificate before I'm sending him to a checkride!
